Would you attempt it?

Approx 8 hours to Calais, over with Tunnel or ferry, then 9 hours.

How many overnight stops?

IvyKaty
I know, I cannot believe they expect anyone to leave their dog in the car. The ferry to Edinburgh was the same - 18 hour trip and they think that leaving the dog in the car would be acceptable.

what do you do with your dog on a train?

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 21:51

Accor hotalls i.e Ibis, Mercure, Novotel etc all accept dogs.

CaptainNancy · 31/01/2010 21:55

Am I being dim? Why can't you all fly? Or are dogs not allowed?

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 21:55

Ivykaty - dog travels in sleeper cabin with you (have to pay half price passenger fare). As long as they are OK with a 10 hour stint it's not a problem. Our dog has done Vienna-Dusseldorf 3.5 times now (the 0.5 was when we returned ti UK).

Ivykaty44 · 31/01/2010 21:55

five kennels and two visit whilst crossing

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 21:56

Dogs are generally allowed on trains, as long as other passengers don't object. She is a small, very gentle dog so I don't see it being a problem.

Autorail not an option, according to that link they are not doing it this summer.

did you ever go home orirnteerer or did you not find your way

Ivykaty44 · 31/01/2010 21:58

can you leave the car at home?

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 21:59

MmeLindt - your main problem (and not a problem if Austrian vets are anything to go by) is to get a local vet in Geneva(?) who will stamp your pet passport (ahem) accordingly i.e. to concur with your 24-48hr window to enter UK!

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 21:59

You are fantastic! I looked on their website and did not find that info.

Are the kennels outside? Dont the doggies get cold?

OP posts:
Ivykaty44 · 31/01/2010 22:00

The kennels are located on deck 5 on the exterior of the vessel.
Pet kennel size is 48 inches / 121 cm long x 32 inches / 81 cm wide x 35 inches / 89 cm high

Ring and ask them ....

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 22:02

IvyKaty44 - 4 hrs drive from Dusseldorf train to Calais .....the 0.5 trip was our final (?...never say never...) trip to the UK

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 22:02

CptNancy
She could fly but only into London Heathrow which would mean train to Scotland.

And she would have to go in the hold, which I am reluctant to do to my pampered pooch.

Ivykaty44 · 31/01/2010 22:03

No it will be summer the dog will sunbath on deck and have a night mooch with other doggies that eve in the balm moonlight sea

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 22:05

orienteerer
Yes, I have asked our vet about that. Will have to be careful of the timing but should be ok.

Will phone Norfolkline tomorrow.

DH is finally appreciative of the wonders of MN

Flying dog seems a good idea until you look into cost....it is per kilo which includes the cost of the crate (significant).

Ivykaty44 · 31/01/2010 22:06

paws for thought then

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 22:10

lol IvyKaty. Just as well she has been neutered then, would not want a permanent reminder of the holiday romance.

She is only 3kgs so the crate would weigh more than her.

As she's so light flying & car hire might well be an option?

orienteerer · 31/01/2010 22:16

...in fact I believe that if they are small enough to go into one of these carriers they can travel under your seat?

MmeLindt · 31/01/2010 22:19

Not flying into UK apparently, Orienteerer. They have to go into the hold. I would have to fly to London or Manchester then get a connecting flight to Scotland. Means the dog would be all day on flights alone in her crate.

I am too soft.
