DH and I had a family gathering last night to celebrate his Uncle's 90th birthday. Some of his cousins were there, I find them hard to take at times, they are quite ignorant, nosey, ill bred, and they would be quite snobby too.

They are in their 50's with grown up children. They and their children (8 in all)turned up and hour late for the meal. One of them said to me, "your outfit is lovely, but you are way to thin," and tut tutted off with herself.

FFS I am 40 with 5 young kids, i never sit down all day running around after them. I am nearly 5ft 10 and a size 10 so yes I am pretty slim, but I eat like a horse, I just can't gain weight. I wish I could, but at the moment life is so hectic i just burn it off.

The point is, I am sick of people who hardly know you yet feel they have a right to talk about your weight. You wouldnt say to someone, "you're a bit on the pudgy side go an lose a few pounds" yet people seem to think its ok to say it to you if you are thin.

It's not. It's rude. AIBU?

YANBU. People are so bloody rude sometimes.

RonaldMcDonald · 31/01/2010 16:08

you would say both those things and much more in my family
they are old, what else have they got to say for themselves?

GetDownYouWillFall · 31/01/2010 16:11

At least she said something nice about your outfit!
She was probably jealous of your lovely figure. Take it as a compliment and don't let it bother you any longer

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 16:12

This woman is only in her 50's FFS, that's hardly old! They've been like this as long as I've known them, 15 years, so it's not age, just bloody rudeness Imo!

Welll my Gran was always telling me to lose weight!

They are probably jealous. I know I am!

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 16:15

Cece, don't be. They weight has all come off my boobs and my face, so I am gaunt and flat chested if that makes you feel any better!

Nikita - LOL! Not really I would be in heaven if I were flat chested! Oh the clothes I could wear Nothing worse than people talking to your cleavage!

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 16:21

AvrilHeytch i would like to do that too, but I can never think of a witty riposte at the time and usually end up muttering something about running around all day after the kids, as if I have to explain myself for being thin.

At my age I should know better and be assertive enough to just respond with some curt and witty put down.

If you can think of any, let me know!

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 16:23

Cece I used to have a cleavage and I miss it so much.

So does my poor Dh!

God you sound like you have fab proportions. But yes it's v rude to say someone is way too anything; thin/fat/short/tall whatever.

My dc are tall for their ages and the amount of comments about it are annoying tbh. I don't go round saying disparaging things about other people's short dc. Some shapes seem to be fair gane for commments, others not. Strange but true. Ignore ignore!

sweetkitty · 31/01/2010 16:26

My mother and my aunts spend their time commenting on my "huge" cousins or my "poor" looking i.e. thin ones. They are all obsessed with weight.

Last time I seen one of my Aunts was at MILs funeral, as she was leaving he shouted after me "SK you have some figure" I was like WTF I was very upset at the time and thought it was quite inappropriate even if meant as a compliment.

I don't know where the ideal is with them, you are either too fat or too thin

RonaldMcDonald · 31/01/2010 16:28

what about
"I suppose I'd better take advantage of this figure whilst I can, soon I'll be all middle aged spread like you!"

RonaldMcDonald · 31/01/2010 16:30

Also don't you think this thread is a bit
" oh, my diamond shoes are pinching again"???
yastillbu

sweetkitty · 31/01/2010 16:36

Ronald - I think being told you are too thin all the time can be as bad as being told you are too fat.

I rememebr my teenage years being told "yuck your ribs are sticking out!" The irony now right enough.

schroeder · 31/01/2010 16:40

What ronald mcdonald said

RonaldMcDonald · 31/01/2010 16:46

Oh no, I just can't fit another £50 note into my purse, what shall I do?.....

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 16:52

Ronald people can start a thread about whatever they want to discuss.

If it's all a bit precious for you don't hang about.

OP posts:
nickschick · 31/01/2010 16:54

You should have just smiled and said 'itss all the shagging we do' personally im pissed you are a size 10 lol .

BrahmsThirdRacket · 31/01/2010 16:55

YANBU it's rude to comment on other people's appearances without invitation unless what you're saying is 100% complimentary. There's no need.

sanfairyann · 31/01/2010 16:57

if you're really finding it hard to put weight on and are missing the curves, maybe a thyroid test is due? often goes haywire after birth apparently.

Sanfairyann I did have one a few months ago and it came back normal, so it's not that.

Once the kids are a bit bigger and I don't have to lift carry do nappies dress them etc I reckon I'll put it back on again.

Course will prob go back on my arse instead of my face where I need it!

Irishchic · 31/01/2010 17:04

Thank Jajas am with you on that one!
