Oh can we turn this into Edinburgh vs Glasgow thread? Hooray OK I'll start.

How do you know when you're a weegie? When you let your 12-year-old daughter smoke at the dinner table, in front of her kids.

gaelicsheep · 30/01/2010 23:24

Outwith in what context though? I've used it in England, I'm sure.

LTBR - will I redeem myself if I say I prefer Glasgow to Edinburgh any day?

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:25

What like that time?

scanty · 30/01/2010 23:25

'if it wisnae for yur wellies, where wid ye be......'

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:26

You most certainly do Sheep. I always thought you were the intelligent sort and you've proved me right.

YourCallIsImportant · 30/01/2010 23:27

I'm from Glasgow, I don't say 'defenetly' but accept that some people do and recognise it's part of the character and dialect of some parts of the city.

If it really bothers you however, then maybe you should try correcting them.

Let us know how you get on with that.

Paolosgirl · 30/01/2010 23:27

A mere fluke - DH and DS were at the game, and assured me that the weegies were lucky!

MarineIguana · 30/01/2010 23:27

I can't think clearly about "outwith" now because I've become partly scottish-dialect-speaking and can't remember - but I know it sounded totally wrong when I was first here and isn't used the way it is in England.

Someone will know!

bandgeek · 30/01/2010 23:27

Defenetly is said in Fife too! I hate to hear it pronounced like that, and I'm a native Fife (the only Kingdom in Britain [preen])

My personal favourite was my gran, once when she was asking my grandad to pass her nightie to her - 'gees ma goon oot'

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:28

I found this about Glaswegians vs Edinburgh. It's so true.

'It is unfair to say that the people of Edinburgh are mean ? it?s just that the boundless generosity of Glaswegians is so overwhelming that Edinburgers will forever live in their shadow in that respect.
If you call around unexpectedly at the home of an Edinburger near mealtimes (the height of bad manners, surely) you will be met with the phrase ?you?ll have had your tea?. Note please, that they?re not asking if you?ve already eaten but are in fact telling you that you?re getting nothing out of them; not a sausage. Even if they?ve just been to Sainsburys and done a big shop and even if they have vanloads of groceries parked in their driveway, there?s no possibility that a morsel of their food will pass your (starving) lips.

Glaswegians are quite the opposite. As soon as you ring their doorbell, or even if they just catch a glimpse of you passing by on your way to work or the chip shop, and even if they don?t know you and you have never before set eyes on them ? they will attempt to feed you, whether you want it or not. This will happen even if their fridge and their food cupboards are entirely devoid of contents and even if they don?t have a pot to piss in. If necessary, they will make you eat an imaginary meal with them.'

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:29

Yes lucky we weren't born in Edinburgh.

Bleatblurt · 30/01/2010 23:30

We could always laugh at Aberdonians instead of picking on us poor little Edinburghers. I firmly believe every woman from Aberdeen looks and sounds like Roisin from River City!

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:30

I've never watched River City so I couldn't comment on that.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:32

And this time?

Bleatblurt · 30/01/2010 23:34

I don't have a bad word to say about Glaswegian. I daren't. I don't fancy a stay in hospital.

littlemissfixit · 30/01/2010 23:38

no wonder river shitty's rubbish

OP posts:
gaelicsheep · 30/01/2010 23:40

I always thought River City was set in Glasgow! (I've never watched it either.)

I can't tell Scottish accents apart in the main . Invernesian and Glaswegian are about my limit.

Bleatblurt · 30/01/2010 23:42

It is set in Glasgow (which would be why it's rubbish ] but one of the characters is from Aberdeen.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:42

It is set,or is supposed to be, in Glasgow.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:43

Shall I put you down for the fish or the stew for tomorrow's dinner Butterball?

gaelicsheep · 30/01/2010 23:44

Oh, I see - duh. (Not so intelligent obviously).

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:44

Pink or lilac gown?

Bleatblurt · 30/01/2010 23:45

Eh, what? If you are taking the piss out of me I'm too stupid to get it.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2010 23:46

Well you are from Edinburgh so I shouldn't expect too much.

giraffesCantCeilidhDance · 30/01/2010 23:46

Rivercity is filmed in Dumbarton sheep, but one character is from Aberdeen and has a rather amusing accent - the likes of which I have never heard before!
