To make the driver take the food away again?

I'm worn out and ill today. DH has gone away for two nights so I thought I'd order a delivery. When the driver came to the door for some reason my card didn't work in his machine. I used it an hour earlier in Homebase. There's plenty of money in the account. I don't normally have any problems with my card but it wouldn't work in his machine.

I offered to pay by cheque but he said, 'no we don't take cheques'.

So he 'phoned his work who told him I had to go to a cashpoint with him and get money out. I said, 'I have three young children in the house and I don't want to leave them here.' He (the man on the 'phone) said, 'Take the children out with you' I said 'no. The whole point of this was to make my life easier.' Obviously the pizzas aren't getting any warmer during all of this.

Then he said to me, 'I'll call back in five minutes'

The driver had gone back to the car to get his 'phone so at this point I walked out, gave him back the pizza boxes and said, 'forget it. I'll cook!' and went back inside.

Then the man 'phoned again to say this isn't acceptable. You HAVE to go out to a cash point' And we argued about whether it was his machine or my card at fault.

The whole point in spending £33 was to make it easier for me. So I said 'No'.

I think they were unreasonable to try to make me leave the house to go to the cashpoint especially as the pizzas would be cold by the time I got back.

So. AIBU?

YANBU

that is a disgraceful attitude

expecting you to take yourself and 3 children out at night, in teh cold, to a cashpoint!

i can understand they were miffed at not getting paid, but now they have lost you as a customer. far nicer to have said, no worries, drop in tomorrow with the cash, or we'll collect it etc etc

confrontation and lack of customer services is disgraceful

Lulumama · 30/01/2010 18:14

sorry you are ill, hope you're feeling better soon

fernie3 · 30/01/2010 18:15

they are being very unreasonable!
I would call the bank this sort of thing has happened to me once or twice and it has been that they froze the card because of fraud.

belgo · 30/01/2010 18:15

YANBU. Did you not have another card to use?

LesbianMummy1 · 30/01/2010 18:16

i can see both sides could the shop not have taken payment over the phone they can do that without you present this is how most takeaways accept payment

Spidermama · 30/01/2010 18:17

I don't have another card, no.

I will call the bank.

You would have thought they'd have made an exception and taken a cheque for all our sakes.

No, you were right, you offered a legal method of payment which they refused. Don't worry about it. Them being cross doesn't mean you were wrong. It's very shocking that he expected you to take three children out of the house to go to a cashpoint.

macdoodle · 30/01/2010 18:18

YANBU totally out of order, no way would I drag my children out in the night in a car with a strange man!!!
Bizarre anyway, they knew wher you lived and your name, its not like you could do a runner!!

Paolosgirl · 30/01/2010 18:18

YANBU at all!

£33 for pizza - blimey. I must be getting old..

macdoodle · 30/01/2010 18:19

Next time use Domino's you can order and pay online, never had any hassle!

juneybean · 30/01/2010 18:19

They were being very unreasonable!

Had you used them often?

Booyhoo · 30/01/2010 18:19

wow!! cant believe he expected you to take all the children to a cashpoint.

unacceptable way to treat a customer.

YANBU

ilovemydogandmrobama · 30/01/2010 18:20

Ridiculous they didn't take a cheque. I mean, they know where you live should it have bounced!

Chillohippi · 30/01/2010 18:20

YANBU.

noddyholder · 30/01/2010 18:22

YANBU I have done the same tonight for the same reasons!I hope I don't get a shock in half an hour as I have no cash here either.Come round for beans on toast if you don't get it sorted xx

Spidermama · 30/01/2010 18:23

Paolosgirl it was three pizzas, a salad and a £6 delivery charge. It was supposed to be a treat.

I'm worried now that they're going to hound me for it with dh away. I didn't take the food so I am certainly not going to pay them.

Spidermama · 30/01/2010 18:24

Thanks Noddy.
I wonder if it's the same company. I'd better not name them just in case but they collect food from restaurants and bring it to you.

I've never used them before and never will again.

OP posts:
belgo · 30/01/2010 18:25

I would't think they would hound you for the money, although they didn't treat you very nicely at all.

Sad you didn't get your treat when you are ill.

Paolosgirl · 30/01/2010 18:27

Ahh - that explains it.

Let them hound - it's not your fault that their machine didn't work. They will only be concerned that they will have to justify that lost sale to head office - again, not really your problem. It should be up to them to accept cheques as an alternative, not for the customer to be inconvenienced by having to go to a cashpoint.

Spidermama · 30/01/2010 18:33

Thanks all. It seems IANBU for which I am relieved.

I don't like making enemies though. It's an uneasy feeling.

YANBU name and shame them so we can all boycot

Spidermama · 30/01/2010 18:56

No I am too scared. If they demand money I will.

OP posts:
digitalgirl · 30/01/2010 18:58

YANBU. Is it Deliverance?

MiladyDeWinter · 30/01/2010 19:13

DH says YANBU in that you had a valid form of payment and an alternative and no intention to deceive.

I am squiffy and agree with DH for once. Bloody hell, if you wanted to get all the DC in the car in the cold and dark you would have picked the pizza up!

cantcarryon · 30/01/2010 19:27

What nasty bullies.

Do these delivery people do loan sharking as a sideline?
