To have told a lady she had "dropped something" when it was a cigarette butt?

Was walking along street and came up behind a middle aged lady when she dropped her cigarette butt on the floor, half heartedly stamped on it (missed) and kept walking. Litter bug!

As I overtook her I said very politely and in uber-helpful manner, "Excuse me I think you just dropped something". She headed back to look for the lost item. I just carried on my way.

Was it a bit cheeky? Just see red when people (esp, those that should know better) litter and as for leaving lit cigarette on floor....

Hehe.

lol

Awesome.

I once came out of our local shop behind a group of teenage girls, one of whom unwrapped a chocolate bar and dropped the wrapper (there's a bin a few steps away, FGS). So I picked it up and gave it back to her saying 'Here, I think you dropped this.' She was rather embarrassed but probably just thought I was a mad ol' woman

lindy100 · 27/01/2010 14:37

A friend of mine once got out of a car at traffic lights and tapped on the window of the car next to him, holding up his dropped cigarette butt.

I wish I had the nerve...

I think YANBU. But would you have done it to anyone less harmless-looking?

BlameItOnTheBogey · 27/01/2010 14:38

I always do this; a woman dropped her bus ticket on the floor of the bus last week and I did exactly the same (very polite helpful smile, 'oh excuse me, but I think you just dropped something'). People always look embarrassed and pretend not to have realised and then hunt for said dropped item. Not agressive and gets the message across.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 27/01/2010 14:38

Ha ha.

She clearly missed the point though as she wouldn't have gone back if she had known you meant her cigarette butt.

YANBU.

good for you
have to say i thught this was pretty normal the amount of people who do it - i don't smoke & don't litter!

RichardGereandtheGuineaPigs · 27/01/2010 14:41

I pulled into a parking bay to collect DS from school, there was a bag of litter in a Tesco bag in the middle of the road. It looked as though someone had just tidied their car out, scooped it all into a bag and dumped it.

I got out and picked it up, sitting on the top was the guys name and address on a tax renewal letter from the DVLA.
I took it into the office the next day, put it in an envelope and posted it back to him.

Oh to have been a fly on the wall.

Daffodilly · 27/01/2010 14:43

Agree it is normal - but not actually acceptable.

Lindy - no probably wouldn't have done it to anyone less harmless-looking! Wouldn't risk my personal safely (or DS who was with me) over a cig butt.

that's brilliant RG

compo · 27/01/2010 14:44

RichardGere - did you send the form or just the rubbish?

some you paid postage?

or did you leave it stampless so he had to pay to pick it up ? I am intrigued, lol

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2010 14:44

no, i agree, just one of those things i prob don't even register iyswim.
Now McD's cartons out of a moving car window...

indie37 · 27/01/2010 14:45

Do you do it to everyone or just people you think won't retaliate?

Nancy66 · 27/01/2010 14:47

A friend of mine - an intelligent, educated woman in her early 40s drops litter all the time. She argues that if she didn't she would be putting road sweepers out of work. She is deadly serious.

icancancan · 27/01/2010 14:48

I always do this too even to teenagers! they invariably pick it up and never answer back

icancancan · 27/01/2010 14:49

oops

RichardGereandtheGuineaPigs · 27/01/2010 14:49

I sent it all back, including the Rustler burger wrappers, (vom) cigarette butts and empty coke cans (I crushed these first) and happily paid the postage on it as I wanted to make sure it got there.

LittleMrsHappy · 27/01/2010 14:50

Honestly I find it stupid, people smoke and people litter, unless your going to make a point to everyone who does this, then its pointless other than to make yourself feel better in a self righteous way.

eggontoast · 27/01/2010 14:50

I hate it when smokers litter with their fag buts. Especially outside hospital entrances.

There speaks the generation failed under NuLabour, you clearly were not taught any civic pride at school for the area you live in.

allothernamesinuse · 27/01/2010 15:01

I agree that smokers shouldn't litter, but tbh, I am left wondering what smokers should do with their butts. (No, I am not a smoker btw.)

How about butt bins strategically placed in public areas?

BlameItOnTheBogey · 27/01/2010 15:03

RichardGere - I think I love you! (Now there's a phrase I never thought I would say)

Chillohippi · 27/01/2010 15:12

Well done, OP.
And well done Richard Gere I hope it was nice and stinky when it got to him.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 27/01/2010 15:12

There are rubbish bins and cigarette bins around.
