To have told a lady she had "dropped something" when it was a cigarette butt?

Was walking along street and came up behind a middle aged lady when she dropped her cigarette butt on the floor, half heartedly stamped on it (missed) and kept walking. Litter bug!

As I overtook her I said very politely and in uber-helpful manner, "Excuse me I think you just dropped something". She headed back to look for the lost item. I just carried on my way.

Was it a bit cheeky? Just see red when people (esp, those that should know better) litter and as for leaving lit cigarette on floor....

Oh Richard dont be so illogical, people do things everyday that I dont agree with, but I am not in the process of castrating them, just because I dont do it!

I was very clearly taught civic pride, but that didn't stop the vigilantes tearing the towns award winning hanging baskets down, or vandalising the towns building's etc...

I very much know both my home and resident country heritage, history and historical buildings, but it does not mean everybody respects them the way I or others do!

am i alone in my stupidness that i rarely appreciate/understand witty comments?

allothernamesinuse · 27/01/2010 15:18

Fab I have seen many litter bins around, but I haven't seen many 'butt' bins.

Maybe because I haven't been looking

nickelbabe · 27/01/2010 15:28

there's nothing wrong with putting it out with your shoe then picking it up nd taking it to a bin.

abride · 27/01/2010 15:31

'I took it into the office the next day, put it in an envelope and posted it back to him.
'

allothernamesinuse · 27/01/2010 15:32

Good idea Nickelbabe

indie37 - how exactly would someone be justified in 'retaliating' for having their mingingness pointed out to them ?

DD1 is a bugger for saying in a loud voice 'Oh - that lady dropped a crisp bag - that's NOT A NICE THING TO DO IS IT' in her best mimicking mummy voice

Poledra · 27/01/2010 16:00

I don't think anyone would be 'justified' in retaliating, Sassy, but people do. I remember seeing a thread on here where someone had pointed out to a man that his dog had fouled the pavement - she got sworn at, and threatened to have it rubbed in her face

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 16:07

Nancy - does your friend actually have a road sweeper following two steps behind her ? What an utter tit-head she is.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/01/2010 16:08

Difficult. I don't think you are being unreasonable as long as you are prepared to challenge anybody, not just choose your targets. I do smoke , but live out of the UK so generally I can find a bin to put the end in.

Umami · 27/01/2010 16:13

Jamie - we are sorely in need of men!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 16:14

I do choose my targets.

With some people I would do what the OP did.

With others, I would just pick the litter up myself (I am not an idiot)

If self-righteousness is not an option for reasons of personal safety, then at least I've made myself feel better by not having to look at the litter.

PotPourri · 27/01/2010 16:14

Nice one!

indie37 · 27/01/2010 16:45

I'm not saying that retaliation is justified, it's just that people who do this generally only do it to certain types of people and I was just wondering if the OP did it to everyone who littered or just 'soft' targets. And is it just cigarette butts or any litter? And really what is the OP hoping to get out of this post? I hate these types of posts, so pious and self righteous.

southeastastra · 27/01/2010 16:50

i think it's quite rude tbh, what's she meant to do with it?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 16:51

But butts are still litter. They aren't biodegradable.

I agree there aren't enough bins (litter or cigarette), but it's still litter.

Sassybeast · 27/01/2010 16:51

I see your point. I just think it's crap when we live in a society when people treat the environment that we all live in like crap and people are too frightened to challenge them.

RichardGereandtheGuineaPigs · 27/01/2010 16:56

i think it's quite rude tbh, what's she meant to do with it?

Don't be ridiculous, it is litter or is there a special exclusion zone around cigarette butts ?

southeastastra · 27/01/2010 16:59

you can't put hot butts in a rubbish bin though so where can you put them?

unless the road is, of course, littered with special butt bins

southeastastra · 27/01/2010 17:00

and don't effing me - that's kind of rude too y'know just because i have an opinion

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 17:00

Richard - I honestly think that many smokers think cigarette butts aren't litter -they are so little, no harm done

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 17:02

Oh Oh, X post - please don't feff me for using the sign southeastra

Jamieandhismagictorch · 27/01/2010 17:03

feff ? eff !

Sassybeast · 27/01/2010 17:03

Are you a smoker Southeastastra ?
