To not let him bring a Ouija Board into my house?

This might all sound a bit silly. But basically, BIL is visiting us this weekend, he is 23.

He called last night to say he had got a Ouija Board, and would bring it with him for us to try out 'for a laugh'.

Was a bit of a shock, as tbh he has never shown any interest in anything gothic...which in itself shows that he just sees it as a novelty toy or something, I don't know.

DH was a bit sceptical, but rubbish at saying no to people. However I am ready to call him up and say for him to leave it behind.

AIBU not to want one of these things in my house? I have heard lots of unsettling things about them, and I am really not sure I want one in my house, especially when my little girl will be asleep upstairs.

BIL is a little immature and will no doubt take the mickey out of me for saying I don't want one in the house, but I can't help but wonder about all the bad things I've heard, and tbh can't understand why somebody would bring this along as a fun Saturday night activity??

What do you all think? Anybody had any experiences?

The only experience ive had was when my sisters made one out of the monopoly board when we were little, we used a little glass egg cup as the pointer thing. The scariest outcome was the bollocking we got off our mum because we put stickers all over the board that ripped it when we tried to remove them!

GrimmaTheNome · 27/01/2010 12:45

Gosh, is he a throwback to the 70s? There was a craze for ouija boards when I was a teen. Its not going to do you any harm to have it physically in the house but its a silly waste of time. If I was in your position I'd take the piss mercilessly.

biggirlsdontcry · 27/01/2010 12:47

YANBU - your house your rules , just explain to BIL that you don't like the idea of those things & it would make you feel uncomfortable having it in your house ,

RollBaubleUnderTree · 27/01/2010 12:48

I am cynical and a sceptic etc. Did a makeshift ouija years ago and it did work - the cup thing was gliding across the table and was not being pushed. I am not for a moment saying it was a spirit...the power of the mind is an odd thing. It freaked me out so I suggest not going near!

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 12:48

I wouldn't allow it in my house ....

Yanbu

I've never watched the Exorcist incase it does something to me....

Katisha · 27/01/2010 12:50

I would tell him not to bring it personally. I don't think dabbling with the occult for a laugh is a great idea.

Morloth · 27/01/2010 12:54

Ouija boards always seemed like "asking for trouble" to me. I mean there is an excellent chance that it is all bullshit and nothing actually will happen. But I don't know that there is nothing out there so why open a door?

It wouldn't be happening in my house.

wukter · 27/01/2010 12:56

YANBU. You don't want it in your house. There's loads of things I don't want in my house, they don't come in and I don't need to justify it.
It's not a big deal really - I'd just text and say they freak you out and don't bring it. He only wants it for a laugh - suggest he brings a bottle of wine instead then you can all giggle like loons.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 27/01/2010 12:59

I wouldn't have one in my house either.

Yes it most probably is a load of old crap, but why should you be made to feel uncomfortable in your own home?

Elffriend · 27/01/2010 12:59

You could just shame him out of bringing it rather than have him take the piss... So laugh and say, "What are you, 12?!! Really not our thing so we'll pass thanks...If you do you use it elsewhere give my regards to Elvis..."

ruddynorah · 27/01/2010 13:00

we used to do these loads when i was a teen. they did 'work.' we even checked by having one of our german exchange students, who spoke little english, writing down which letters came up while those of us holding the glass had our eyes shut so we couldn't cheat. and it STILL worked. i mean it came up with stuff that german exchange student couldn't possibly have known about. freaky stuff!

MrsMontague · 27/01/2010 13:03

That's the thing, it could well be a load of rubbish, but like morloth says, it seems like asking for trouble! I will probably just text him.
I did wonder what had compelled him, he has never shown any interest in things like that before.

I wouldn't have one in my house either. After reading some of Expat's experiences with ghosts and spirits on here I definitely wouldn't!

MrsMontague · 27/01/2010 13:05

Really, ruddynorah, gosh...I'm definitely going to have to say no, DH certainly wouldn't like it. We watched the film 1408, and he had a massive sulk until I switched it off because it was freaking him out! So goodness knows how he would react faced with something like that.

Alambil · 27/01/2010 13:06

I would not have one in my house. Ever. If the guest wouldn't leave it behind, then they'd not come in!

cumbria81 · 27/01/2010 13:07

YABU. It's a complete load of old coddswallop and about as much threat to you and your family as a dead snail.

ChickensLoveMarmite · 27/01/2010 13:07

YANBU. If there's nothing to it, its a waste of time. Yet if there is something to it....well, I wouldn't poke a sleeping bear with a big stick, IYSWIM.

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 13:08

maybe he's started mixing with goths..?

althought 23 seems a bit too old

FoxyRevenger · 27/01/2010 13:10

It's just a TOY!!!

cyteen · 27/01/2010 13:11

I think you should let him bring it, then when you're all using it subtlely direct the pointer so it spells out BIL IS A TWAT over and over again.

BendyBob · 27/01/2010 13:12

Yanbu. I wouldn't want it in the house. I think they are dodgy.

littlemissfixit · 27/01/2010 13:14

after watching paranormal activity theres no fooking way i'd have 1 in my house, then again i'm a pansy when it comes to scary films (i know it wasnt real btw).

YANBU if it makes you uncomfortable, as everyone else says..your house, your rules.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 27/01/2010 13:15

YANBU. I will not let anyone bring one into my house and I'm really stern about it.

They bring bad things, you don't want that in your house.

He will actually be inviting evil things into your home.

My great auntie and uncle did one a long time ago. It told them the date the first man would land on the moon and then it went crazy flying all over the board so my uncle took it outside and smashed it up. No idea why they did it as they are both very, very religious, as was my great nana who was deeply upset about it. As it had been in her home.

My BIL claims his siter did one with her friends when he was very young. He was stood on the sofa leaning over her back trying to see in and a face appeared in the glass table.

Now you don't know how true these things are and whether people sort of get caught up in the whole thing and imagine the rest.

But do you want to risk having something negative in your home?

Tell him no.

WhoIsAsking · 27/01/2010 13:18

@ Elffriend.

Do this!!
