To not let him bring a Ouija Board into my house?

This might all sound a bit silly. But basically, BIL is visiting us this weekend, he is 23.

He called last night to say he had got a Ouija Board, and would bring it with him for us to try out 'for a laugh'.

Was a bit of a shock, as tbh he has never shown any interest in anything gothic...which in itself shows that he just sees it as a novelty toy or something, I don't know.

DH was a bit sceptical, but rubbish at saying no to people. However I am ready to call him up and say for him to leave it behind.

AIBU not to want one of these things in my house? I have heard lots of unsettling things about them, and I am really not sure I want one in my house, especially when my little girl will be asleep upstairs.

BIL is a little immature and will no doubt take the mickey out of me for saying I don't want one in the house, but I can't help but wonder about all the bad things I've heard, and tbh can't understand why somebody would bring this along as a fun Saturday night activity??

What do you all think? Anybody had any experiences?

I would not have an ouija board in my house.
They are not to be used "for a laugh".

Do not mess with things you do not understand.

BitOfFun · 27/01/2010 14:22

I tried playing Risk, the military strategy game when I was a kid. I definitely didn't understand that. Will I be OK, do you think?

cyteen · 27/01/2010 14:23

All the kids at my school were too busy trying to get high on aerosols to make up any fun scary toilet rituals.

I wouldn't have one in the house,I've done a lot of reading about this sort of stuff and no way would I want to invite something into my home.I also refused to let dh spend the night in the empty haunted house near us,when he suggested it as a charity fundraising exercise. My friend used to live there and I didn't want the 'something 'she told me about, following him home.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 27/01/2010 14:32

I'm with Morloth on this one in thinking it is probably all a pile of rubbish but wanting to hedge my bets just in case. So no, not in my house.

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 14:34

MM;

I'm interested in all things gothic/occult ...

And thank you for starting a very interesting thread.....

YANBU.

I'd say no and if I found out he brought it in my house it would be either him going out or the board.

My 15-year-old niece wanted to play with one of these things and believe me, she didn't want to after I got through to her!

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 14:49

Are you able to tell me more expat......?

Morloth · 27/01/2010 14:53

Wynken I pretty much always hedge my bets, is the best way to a happy life I find.

Kaloki · 27/01/2010 14:54

I should probably say, I'm someone you wouldn't want around when doing something like an ouija board, I have a tendency to create "atmosphere". Eg. I have one friend who is convinced she got a response from a seance years ago, I never did get round to telling her it was me tapping on the underside of a desk. There have been other instances too.

Which makes me discount a lot of spooky stories, as if I thought of doing these things then I can't be the only one.

expatinscotland · 27/01/2010 14:54

Oh, I've posted a lot of stuff about experiences I've had or that happened to my family over hte years here, DP.

Ouija boards are just better left alone.

JodieO · 27/01/2010 15:04

I LOVE reading your posts about the experiences you've had Expat, they're really interesting

MrsMontague · 27/01/2010 15:27

expat i am fairly new so don't believe I've ever read any of your threads. Are you particuarly interested in the occult, or are these experiences things which have happened to you inexplicably?

daftpunk it is quite interesting isn't it, to hear about other peoples experiences, I shall have to show this thread to BIL and hope it puts some sense into him!

That's why I haven't done any quadratic equations for a while.

Well, Ouija boards are a load of old cock, but if it's gonna set your imagination going and affect your sleep or something, then tell him not to bother bringing it.
Hey....did anyone do that "In the house of consequences" thing at school? Where a group of you chanted "in the house of...." while lifting a friend up as if she weighed nothing....
Never worked, BTW, 'cos it be shizzle, innit?

PotPourri · 27/01/2010 15:56

Say no!!! A mate of mine is still haunted (and I mean the real deal) as a result of 'just a laugh'.

Don't - just don't!!!

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 15:58

I must have missed all those threads expat....

wrong time of day to be talking about this anyway....definitely a subject for after dark....

AliGrylls · 27/01/2010 16:10

I wouldn't let one into my house - I find them frightening.

Agree totally with AtilattheMeerkat (great name by the way).

VinegarTits · 27/01/2010 16:11

I wouldnt mess with shit like that, but i am scared of my own shadow

How is your mate still haunted? and who by? go on your have to tell us that story

WorzselMummage · 27/01/2010 16:13

potpourri you cant post something like that and not elaborate !

minouminou · 27/01/2010 16:16

Yea, go on, PotPourri - you've got to fill us in here.
Is he really haunted, or just - ahem - "thinks" he's haunted and interprets random events as evidence?

pigletmania · 27/01/2010 16:18

I would never in the month of Sundays have one anywhere near my house. I do believe in life after death, has anyone watched Living with the dead on Living, whereby people have dabbled with the Occult and have a particularly nasty entity in their house.

daftpunk · 27/01/2010 16:18

Can't we all meet up at midnight....?

pigletmania · 27/01/2010 16:20

Nothing to be messed around with or done for a laught, you open the doorway to good as well as evil sprits.

PotPourri · 27/01/2010 16:27

As a teenager, he and some friends did ouiji board. They got something, all thought it was one of the group moving it etc etc. HA ha, very funny. But they kept doing it anyway (bored teenagers and all that). It was someone really angry that didn't really realise he was dead. NExt time, his girlfriend came along - MEGA angry, smashed the glass, but told them that the other guy was a murderer. Turned out it was a real story - they researched the papers in the local library - some kind of crash due to wreckless driving, with a guy and his girlfriend. They got a priest to exorcise the shed - he did and gave them a right ticking off. The church don't think it's all a bit of fun or a toy btw - it's serious stuff.

And ever since, he has felt the presence come and go, as have the others in the group. It's a chill he gets, and he can identify where in the room the 'ghost' or whatever you want to call it is. He doesn't see the other people much, but they all confirm on the rare occasion that they do meet that the same happens to them.

Needless to say, he does not recommend messing with these things.
