AIBU to think that burlesque is a bit crap?

My friend phoned out of the blue last week and asked if DH and I would like to join them to see a burlesque show in the London. I said yes, because
a) I like going out and don't get to go out often enough,
b) there was talk of dinner after,
c)I didn''t have the heart/guts to say 'Good God woman, what on eath do you want to sit through that cheesy tripe for?'
d) I was caught unawares and panicked.

Now I am not a prude, at least not where a consenting couple and a a bedroom are concerned. I have been known to be a bit inventive/naughty on occasion, and I have had a passing aquaintance with bumsex, bondage etc, so NOT a nun or a repressed saddo, and do I realise that burlesque is not full-on pornography, but I just find the thought of all that cheesy old fashioned titillation caberet-stylee excruciatingly embarrassing and cringey. I don't find it sexy, I find it a bit seedy and sad. I won't know where to look. I can't bear to think I'll be in a room with two hundred bald fat middle aged men who are all pretending to enjoy the 'art' and the music, and the spectacle, when actually their eyes are glazed over and they've got a hard-on under their popcorn. ICK!
I can't bear the chippendales, stripograms, hen-nights or lap-dancing or anything that's designed to get people horny whilst in a room full of strangers. Its all so undignified and cringey and desperate!

I googles the 'artiste' I'm going to have to sit through, and watched a video of her stripping (artistically) whilst singing some crap caberet style song, and I felt a sickeing feeling of impending doom. I'll be fidgeting in my seat all night, for all the wrong reasons and looking through gaps in my fingers.

Am I wrong?

Lol Tiggy's mixed metaphors.

Yes Expat have seen many threads on here where a load of posters go 'all men view porn, fact. Ypu lot who think your husbands don't watch porn are deluding yourselves and your husbands are liars' whilst us lot bang heads against a wall.

LOTS of men do actually find it off putting. Yes, normal men, not gay or repressed. It is a turn off. Those people aint enjoying what they are doing.

noddyholder · 26/01/2010 13:41

Not prudish just found it naff.Pat butcher looky likey in highly flammable corset writhing around a manky old pub!

Adair · 26/01/2010 13:41

I am off to a Burlesque night as part of a hen do. I am a little about it though trying to look at it as good to be doing something zeitgeisty bla bla

SAw URsula Martinez do Hanky Panky recently though. It was FAB. I am a total prude ~(and proud of it ) but I really loved it, was a little shocked and strangely buoyed...

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/01/2010 13:45

Adair you have just made my blood run cold.

I have been tasked to organise my SIL's hen night (and as i am someone who is very half arsed about most things, thinks 'planned' and 'fun' are mutually exclusive and would just like to go to a normal piss up) I think this has potential for disaster.

I am now scared that someone is going to suggest a burlesque show (urgh), or a spa day (urgh urgh) or fucking pole dancing lessons (urgh urgh urgh).

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 26/01/2010 13:47

Kaloki It was Pamela Racine - she now does similar with 'gogol bordello' , amazing woman.

he he

expatinscotland · 26/01/2010 13:47

Whatever happened to hen and stag do's where everyone just went down the local? Or a pub crawl?

It's pretty sad that it now has to be this big organised 'event'.

bruxeur · 26/01/2010 13:49

Best 'do I ever went to was a pub crawl then a curry. Simple and effective.

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/01/2010 13:51

I know expat (feel portent of doom).

We live in a perfectly nice town (Cheltenham) so we can go local and have a nice time. Or get on a train to Bristol or Birmingham.

They were on about a weekend break in somewhere like Bruges but I said no way am I going away for a weekend - am not a miserable cow (honest!) but I spend enough time away from my family and don;t want to sacrifice annual leave for a break away with a bunch of women half of whom I don't know.

SIL is usually a chilled out woman so hopefully when she going on about hen 'events' the otehr night she was just a bit pissed and weddingexcited.

Fucking hell a newly engaged bride is like a kid with an argos catalogue 3 days before Christmas after 6 bottles of blue pop!

Sorry hijack, as you were.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 26/01/2010 13:51

Burleqsue, as I see it, is celebration and flaunting of your body, by women , for women.

Hence, at say Volupte (90% of the audience are women.

It is all about having fun, exposing yourself to an eye without it being sexual.

Burlesque V Tight pvc nurses uniform bar hopping on the streets of Leeds. ....Hmm.

Adair · 26/01/2010 13:53

Oh it's ok, it's for my v cool and inspirational friend (no L plates or anything) so think it will be an experience . Decent food provided - it's somewhere in Central Lonodn (Can't remember). Will try not to get a bit tipsy and take the piss out of horny wbankers.

I sort of know what you mean expat, but I guess it's because none of us know each other so nice to have a focus iykwim. It has been fairly restrained (cost-wise too... eek) and I think for me, a spa day would have filled me with more horror. my sister bought me one for my birthday - does she not know me at ALL?

TiggyR · 26/01/2010 13:54

Any group event intent on forced/organised jollity and premeditated outrageous behaviour is just vile.

OP posts:
Adair · 26/01/2010 13:56

am hoping no premeditated outrageous behaviour. We're not the 'girls'. And we are doing afternoon tea first.

Mumcentreplus · 26/01/2010 13:57

I like the burly underwear thats about it tbh.. so i will buy the underwear when its on special offer..

my sisters Hen night was cool..Lovely dinner then club..got v drunk in the limo drinking Charlmange

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 14:16

noddyholder all of a sudden I think I know who you are talking about! If you are then she is the most vile woman ever!

bruxeur · 26/01/2010 14:22

"the human body is nothing to be ashamed of"

"she is the most vile woman ever!"

Cognitive dissonance! Head...bursting! Hypocrisy...building!!

So burlesque is just for hotties, then?

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 14:31

I didn't mean vile in appearance bruxeur, she's actually really not a nice person.

Mumcentreplus · 26/01/2010 14:32

i thought that too brux..

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 14:34

Good thing I explained myself then :P

Mumcentreplus · 26/01/2010 14:37
Grin
bruxeur · 26/01/2010 14:40

OK fair play.

Cadelaide · 26/01/2010 14:40

Anyone remember someone on here a few years back was going to do a burlesque act at her own wedding?

Now who was that....?

bruxeur · 26/01/2010 14:42

Was it Dita von Teese.

Kaloki · 26/01/2010 14:44

My fault for not explaining myself bruxeur.

Cadelaide I know someone who's done a burlesque dance at their friends wedding, I found that a little.. weird.

ktboo · 26/01/2010 14:45

They shouldn't bother to try and make it arty and ironic. Burlesque would prob be much better if it was just stripping for chubby, middle class goths.
My fella took me to a supposedly excellent show and I found it really boring. I was confused by the audience applause every time a bit of boob was flashed. The outfits are nice tho.
