To think it's cruel to pierce a baby's ears

Abihattie · 19/01/2010 15:33

Just been to a baby massage class and there was a 4mo old there with pierced ears with loop earings in. It must have been painful for the child when it was done. Shouldn't children be old enough to decide for themselves if they want this done or AIBU?

OP posts:

Burn the witch

kinnies · 19/01/2010 15:35

Bun fight!!

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2010 15:36

don't give it to the baby though, it's too young for weaning just yet.

choufleur · 19/01/2010 15:36

again?!

EvilHRLady · 19/01/2010 15:36

Not so sure it's ''cruel''...but it is needless, and tasteless (IMO)

mariedj · 19/01/2010 15:37

Seems so scummy to me.

Ronaldinhio · 19/01/2010 15:37

Ohhhhh, I'd never considered this before.....

AMumInScotland · 19/01/2010 15:41

Congratulations OP, you have just hit on the 4th most popular topic for endless MN discussions.....

BF/FF
Parent & child parking
Supermarket grapes
Baby ear piercing

Your prize is a lot of MNers saying "it's been done before"

GetDownYouWillFall · 19/01/2010 15:45

AMumInScotland - what a pointless thing to say. How is this person to know it's been discussed before, are you supposed to trawl the archives before you post anything?

This was HER experience at HER baby massage class! Why shouldn't she post?

and now that's out the way...
hoop earrings on a baby are vile.

EvilHRLady · 19/01/2010 15:45

Supermarket grapes??
Not seen that one before...
(Or the ear piercing one, but I have been away a little while)

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 15:46

I'll save you a lot of time by telling you exactly how this thread will go.

People will say it's chavvy/tacky/common

People will say it's cruel to the poor ickle bubba

People will say 'but it's perfectly acceptable in my culture/cult/secret society'

There will be heated debate, then insults, then it will all simmer down for a few weeks until the next time someone sees a newborn with J-Lo hoops at toggla gwoop

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2010 15:47

If you can get somebody to say chav and somebody to say abuse (must be two separate people) then I'll reward you with a tried and tested line about hard hats and popcorn.

If you can get somebody to drag a fight across the board and start a thread about a thread, Suzy Wong will pop up with her infamous line.

Go!

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2010 15:50

MrsMattie, you missed out somebody saying something about circumcision and somebody else saying something about female genital mutilation. And somebody else saying don't be so ridiculous.

And something about babies being perfect without holes in their ears. And something about the neighbour's daughter's cousin's ear being ripped to shreds.

indignant · 19/01/2010 15:51

Waht Mra Mattie said.

Only circumcision will get a mention too and the last 100 posts will argure that out.

Yawn

EvilHRLady · 19/01/2010 15:51

OK, got it - but WHAT ABOUT THE GRAPES?!

onlyjoinedforoffers · 19/01/2010 15:52

fgs the poster is maybe new and doesnt know about the endles threads covering the same topics not very welcoming is it to a newbie no wonder we get a bad name

GoldenSnitch · 19/01/2010 15:53

You forgot Baby On Board signs AMumInScotland

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2010 15:53

EvilHRLady, I want you to think very, very carefully before you answer. If you have any inkling of the repercussions of getting the answer wrong, I'd issue a no comment and RUN, RUN, RUN LIKE THE WIND.

Would you allow your child to eat a grape in the supermarket before you had paid for the bunch?

indignant · 19/01/2010 15:53

X posts

AMumInScotland · 19/01/2010 15:54

GetDown - I'm not saying she shouldn't post, I'm pointing out that, by sheer luck, she has picked a topic which is going to get a lot of posters pointing out how often this conversation has been had on here. I thought I was pointing that out in a slightly more friendly and ironic way than just coming on and saying "yawn" or "popcorn" or any of the many other comments she's going to get, in the hope that she would then at least understand why she was getting those comments.

posieparker · 19/01/2010 15:54

Vile, looks rough and completely unjustifiable.

ShowOfHands · 19/01/2010 15:55

OP doesn't want a debate though, she's being contentious and we all know how it goes.

FWIW, I think there is a debate/discussion to be had in there but it never happens. Certainly not with a hyperbole-riddled op.

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 15:56

What's wrong with nicking grapes then? Strawberry creams from pick n mix are nicer when they're free aswell. So are salmon fillets

sasamaxx · 19/01/2010 15:57

Maybe there should be a list of 'standard discussions' with links to all of the different threads containing varying degrees of 'debate'...

claraquack · 19/01/2010 16:03

I live in the Caribbean and everyone asks why my two dd's (aged 2 and 4) don't have their ears pierced.

If there is a MN Caribbean out there, I would say this conversation would be very different.

Just thought I would add that.

And no I don't allow my children to eat unpaid for food in the supermarket, I don't think pregnant women should park in parent and child bays and I think people should be allowed to chose however they want to feed their babies without undue pressure from anyone else.
