To think it's cruel to pierce a baby's ears

Abihattie · 19/01/2010 15:33

Just been to a baby massage class and there was a 4mo old there with pierced ears with loop earings in. It must have been painful for the child when it was done. Shouldn't children be old enough to decide for themselves if they want this done or AIBU?

It's important that Newbies know these things. Next she'll be talking about disabled parking spaces. I mean, come on, I'm helping her put here.

Welcome Abihattie, btw

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 16:08

junglist, my first (and worst) ever flaming on MN was for admitting to knowingly and wilfully eating grapes I hadn't paid for while traipsing around Sainsbo's.

It basically ended with me being cast out as a corrupt criminal and Bad Influence On My Kids. I was shunned by some of the Big Names on MN for a good while. I don't want the same thing happening to anyone else

Mind you, that was back in about 2004 when Grapes was still a hot topic and I'm not even sure disabled parking spaces had been mentioned

sasamaxx · 19/01/2010 16:11

oh crap - I'm definitely not admitting to that then

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 16:14

My worst flamings have been over circumcision and pronounciation. Cos I don't chat right I'm a ficko (with a degree incidentally)

TheMysticMasseuse · 19/01/2010 16:19

I have always wanted to post on a baby ear pearcing thread, thank god one came along

when dd1 was 3 months old i went to a baby yoga class or some such; a propos of nothing I said that people back home were asking when i was going to have her ears pierced, and this very well meaning, very proper, very solicitous yummy mummy told me (enunciating veeeryyyy sloooowly and articulating words veeeerryyy carefeully, cos i 'm a furriner you see,): "oh no, you can't do that, it's considered very low class here in England, people will think you're common!"

I bet she was a MNetter (and no neither of my dds has pierced ears)

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 16:20

Ooh, do we agree or disagree on circumcision then, junglist? I've been rightly flamed for my opinions on that little chestnut, too.

Are you in the 'never met a Jew who complained about not having a foreskin' camp, or part of the 'It's child abuse. Call SS!' brigade?

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 16:20

or even President!

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/01/2010 16:21

I think AMumInScotland was just trying to be helpful.

Poor op is going to be confused when the inevitably parping starts up.

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 16:25

I'm in the different strokes different folks brigade. I had 20 people screeching at me at once and was stuck on the thread all day in case someone thought I was backing down by leaving lol. I bet I know what side you're on

ChazsBarmyArmy · 19/01/2010 16:26

err was the LO being weaned at 16 weeks with a fruit shoot.

MissWooWoo · 19/01/2010 16:27

nothing wrong with newbies discussing something that's been done to death (site is 10 years old after all)

I know that when I've got a bee in my bonnet I want to talk about it, never mind that so and so have already had that conversation.

You go ahead OP.

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 16:28

LOL!

I don't really care either way, to be honest. I couldn't really work up much of a tizzy over baby ear piercing either. But when you say that you get people screeching at you in CAPS about the their sister's friend's cousin's baby having to have half his skull removed because of a dodgy sleeper!

claraquack · 19/01/2010 16:28

How do you know she is new? Does she say she is? Perhaps she just doesn't post/read as much as some people.

EvilHRLady · 19/01/2010 16:32

Aha - in that case...

joanne34 · 19/01/2010 16:33

Peasants !

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 16:34

Didn't have you down as a screecher. That thread was funny I lost the plot forgot which insults were meant for who and then we all made up in the end. I was a child abuser and should have been ashamed of myself. So should all Jewish and Turkish people.

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 16:36

Oh no, I didn't screech. I was screeched at.
Well, SPOKEN TO LIKE THIS with lots of !!!!!!!

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 16:39

I got loads of and even a at my parenting

CarmenSanDiego · 19/01/2010 16:39

YANBU but all the arguments have been summarised pretty well here. Oh and it's a choking hazard, have we had that one? Earrings are one of the most swallowed small items for babies.

I personally think the risks far outweigh the benefits and it goes against my ethics to do something for purely aesthetic (as opposed to medical reasons, although I would debate on that too) that a child can't consent to.

Cultural tradition
"It looks pretty"

v.

Painful
Baby's inability to give informed consent to an unnecessary change made to their body
Risk of tearing
Small risk of migration, infection, scarring
Choking risk

samsaysohboy · 19/01/2010 16:53

Oh good, now I want popcorn, - the real kind, not inflammatory thread cybercorn..

sasamaxx · 19/01/2010 17:30

"By claraquack Tue 19-Jan-10 16:28:52 :How do you know she is new? Does she say she is? Perhaps she just doesn't post/read as much as some people."

Good point - people always think I'm new and I've been around since 2006

claraquack · 19/01/2010 18:20

sasamaxx - thank you I am glad it's not just me. I feel that unless you are on here 24/7 everyone assumes you must be "new". Perhaps she just hadn't seen the other pierced ear posts.

sasamaxx · 19/01/2010 20:15

Glad to be of service

Lots of people don't go near the AIBU and chat boards anyway so how are they to know?

Abihattie · 19/01/2010 20:51

Bloody hell. I wish I'd never mentioned it! Only just starting using the site so sorry for repeating a topic that's been discussed before. I guess it was just on my mind as I'd only just seen it.
Will have to think more carefully before I post
ah well...

junglist1 · 19/01/2010 20:55

Oh no don't worry! There may be loads of newcomers up for discussing it. We are only larking about because certain topics go really murgy
