Well is DH really - to object to children standing in trolleys

He had a rant after going to the supermarket about children standing/sitting in the main part of the trolley (as opposed to the special child seat). He thinks this is vile because you put food in there, and should be banned and gave the woman he saw doing it with her child a mucky look

So is he being unreasonable, should children be allowed in the main part of the trolley?

Food is wrapped, non?

I can see his point and strictly speaking he is correct, but as Cyb says food is generally wrapped and the trolleys wouldn't be clean anyway as they are left outside most of the time.

The other point is how hard it is go shopping with a child. You'd rather they were in there than grabbing stuff and running away.

LadyBiscuit · 18/01/2010 18:58

Given that trolleys are left outside overnight and rained on, taken away by teenagers for spins round the car park and that you don't put 'naked' food in them, I think your DH is being a bit hysterical. Hasn't he got anything better to worry about?

smallorange · 18/01/2010 18:58

Oh I've seen even worse in the supermarket- do you know that some people grow vegetables in soil, and even stick horse shit on them? And then we eat them! Really ! It's DISGUSTING.

I think it's one of those things where you should concentrate on what your own children are doing and let other people worry about theirs.

Tbh, I think the dirty feet in trolley is pushing the point - I can't think of any foodstuff that you would put straight into your trolley unwrapped and not be going to wash anyway.

I don't let ds do it but I'm completely relaxed about other people doing it.

CantSupinate · 18/01/2010 19:00

What Onager said.

skidoodle · 18/01/2010 19:02

PMSL @ smallorange

YHIBU - people who go on about banning things that piss them off are tedious wankers.

MummyDoIt · 18/01/2010 19:08

There are foodstuffs that aren't washable that could come in contact with the trolley. I buy French sticks quite often and the wrapper sometimes slides down, leaving part of the stick in contact with the trolley. I doubt you could wash one of those! Admittedly that's the only example I can think of!

I'd be a bit more concerned about the safety aspect, especially if the child stood up.

differentID · 18/01/2010 19:11

There are actually signs on many trolleys which state not to do this with your child. I don't like seeing it.

mamazon · 18/01/2010 19:13

HIBU.

DS was until recently always placed in teh main part of the trolley because he has SN and if i had to take him to the shops i had to contain him. he was too big for the child seats and i have yet to see a SN trolley with a larger seat.

The hygiene aspect doesnt really hold up as they are generally left outside and have been covered in who knows what.

skidoodle · 18/01/2010 19:13

"I'd be a bit more concerned about the safety aspect, especially if the child stood up."

The person pushing the trolley has probably considered that and made their own judgment on its safety.

I suppose I can see his point, I mean there probably will be the odd occasion where a kid has dog shit or something on their shoes, and that will get transfered to food - it doesnt matter whether the food is wrapped or not, I wouldnt what shit or mud or whatever all over my food.

On the other hand shopping with a toddler is a nightmare at the best of times, and we have to do what we can to get round in one piece in as short as time as possible with as little damage to our mental health/the shop as possible. So sometimes needs must

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2010 19:14

I don't have the judginess in me to start tutting at others for it. I wouldn't do it myself, fark all to do with shoes and food but from a safety pov. Our local sainsbo's have regular tannoy announcements saying not to do it and I have seen the aftermath of a child tipping a trolley and falling out. Not pleasant at all.

CastleDouglas · 18/01/2010 19:14

Lots of people put their children in trolleys, but I've not yet spotted a trolley festooned with dog turd remnants or other urban detritus.

nickytwotimes · 18/01/2010 19:16

Well, it's not ideal safetywise, but it really isn't a big deal, is it?

Am pmsl at smallorange. Supermarket trollies are disgusting whether a kid has stood in them or not. I mean, have you seen the general public?

MummyDoIt · 18/01/2010 19:17

Skidoodle, you could be a bit optimistic about people's common sense! Honestly, I have seen a five/six year old standing in a trolley, rocking it from side to side while the parent pushed it along oblivious. A staff member intervened, otherwise it was only a matter of time before that trolley went over.

lazyemma · 18/01/2010 19:22

People are weird. It wouldn't occur to me to care about other people's children and how they're positioned in a trolley.

People also have all sorts of wrong-headed ideas about germs and hygiene. Your kitchen sink is likely to harbour way more germs than the average child's shoe. Also - money! paper and coin. You're more likely to catch something from the fiver in your purse than the french loaf in your trolley that some kid sat in an hour ago.

Blu · 18/01/2010 19:22

Trolleys have leaking packs of chicken put in them, the conveyor belt is always covered in pools of god knows what, people paw at veg and fresh bread..children risk their lives in trolleys, it's a wonder any of us survive.

tassisssss · 18/01/2010 19:24

actually i have pretty low standards on many things but i don't let my kids do this. if they're too big for the seat they walk (this is mostly so they don't stand on my purchases but nonetheless not allowed!)

LittlePeanut · 18/01/2010 19:46

I used to sit in the trolley when I was little - I can remember arranging my mum's shopping and LOVING it.

I also let my DD have this pleasure, because I'm sure that traipsing around after me must be tedious for a 3 year old. She pretends to scan all the shopping as I put it in the trolley, and chats away to herself happily. Win win as far as I'm concerned.

Agree that trolleys are not very higenic anyway, but even so I always lay my coat in the bottom for her to sit on.

I would not be impressed to recieve a mucky look from your DH! He should mind his own business.

Jimmychasesducks · 18/01/2010 19:52

forgetting the hygiene bit, it is dangerous. there have been threads on this before a quite a few tales of trolleys tipping

blithedance · 18/01/2010 19:52

I wouldn't do it from safety. I am not precious about hygiene but once a trolley tipped over with both my children in it, a toddler DS2 in the child seat and DS1 in the main bit. Blood, bruises, tears the lot, it was not pretty.

But that is the parent's call as others have said, no point ranting about it.
