to think that ELC have gone too far with their pink globe?

Here

It's just so annoying - would people really buy this. The "boys" version is your typical type of globe - it's worse than the pink vets costume.

Sorry i don't get the problem ?
I have an antique globe similar to this with sepia coloured oceans and land masses in various colours includingh yellow. Is that a problem too ?
I think people who deny their DDS pink things are bonkers. Why are you undermining their right to love their favourite colour.Very empowering (not)

tabouleh · 18/01/2010 18:40

YANBU

I think this issue was raised by this campaign recently.

Rockbird · 18/01/2010 18:41

I don't get the fuss either but then I've had this debate on here time and time again. If you don't like it, don't buy the bloody thing. If their sales of pink things go down then they'll stop making them, won't they? I can't get my knickers in a twist over it. Buy it or don't but stop bloody whinging about it. It's only a colour. You lot are putting meaning onto it.

TheFoosa · 18/01/2010 18:53

I bet their sales have rocketed because of the number of people linking to the website

TheFoosa · 18/01/2010 18:54

if the boy's version is a typical globe - THEN BUY THAT ONE

sowhatitsonlysnow · 18/01/2010 18:54

ShockShockShock

starkadder · 18/01/2010 19:09

It is sad but, as Rockbird says, if there wasn't a market, they wouldn't sell it.

It annoys me a bit though. I want to buy DS a tea set (he loves them) and ELC only has in pink. He wouldn't mind it in pink but it clearly implies that they think girls must like playing with teapots more and I am not at all sure that is true.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/01/2010 19:11

ELC does a blue teaset.

starkadder · 18/01/2010 19:22

oh yeah, just found it! I DID look before though! Thanks ABF

mrstimlovejoy · 18/01/2010 19:34

well my dd had it for xmas she's wanted a globe for ages as dh goes all over the world with his job and she likes to see where he's been and going.wanted a small one for her bedroom and struggled to find one that wasn't expensive so settled for the elc one which she loves so yabu tbh don't see what all the fuss is about if you don't like it don't buy it or even look at it simple

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/01/2010 19:37

Sorry starkadder I would of linked but I had a grizzly DD on my lap! Glad you found it, My DS has it and its a really good one, nice sized teacups not too dinky like some I have seen. Makes a good bath toy as well.

belgo · 18/01/2010 19:39

I knew there would be someone on here who had bought it!

belgo · 18/01/2010 19:40

mrstimlovejoy the problem is she'll think that all the countries your dh has visited are pink

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/01/2010 19:50

LOL you know what im going to try and get the figures on how many we've sold nationally. They (the pink and the blue together) are considered a blockbuster line for the learning is fun range so they must sell rather well. we've been selling the pink globe for a couple of years now and if the sales werent good the product would of gone in the sale!

someone out there is buying them!

But im guessing its for the reason another poster said... The pink matches nicely with a bedroom/playroom thats decorated in pinks/purples.

hester · 18/01/2010 19:53

Oh dear god. Now I've seen it all.
ABF - your gardening set is the only thing giving me hope for the planet...

clayre · 18/01/2010 19:55

my mind is made up im getting dd one for her birthday

GrimmaTheNome · 18/01/2010 20:14

If you want a disproportionately pink globe, just get one dating from the days of the British Empire. I guess pink wasn't a stereotypically feminine colour back then.

MilaMae · 18/01/2010 20:25

The problem I have is with how incorrect it is.

It's blue on the correct globes as we all know because it's the sea. Now the only reason I'd part with £18 to buy a globe is to teach my dc about geography. They're going to get a far better grasp of land and sea with the correct colours.

The land masses themselves have specific colours with the dryer central part of Australia being more yellow. With the pink one it's all pink so is teaching nothing about climate. It's basically a useless spinning pink ball. If I wanted a pink ball to spin round and look at I'm sure you could get a much cheaper one. You'd have to be a total mug to actually part with £18 for this.

Somebody reassure me that when you zoom in on the pink one that isn't a flower in the ocean just off Africa. If that is indeed a flower somebody else who is foolish enough to own one please reassure me further that there isn't a mermaid idling flicking her tail just off land somewhere too.

Now what really gripes me is they picture a girl(all dressed in pink of course)playing with the useless pink ball but a boy who obviously has important learning to do is pictured with the globe that might actually teach him something.

ELC can no longer really justify their name. This globe was the reason I did no shopping at ELC this Xmas. You can get just about everything they sell elsewhere, often cheaper.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 18/01/2010 20:28

Maybe they're just having a massive fit of nostalgia for the British Empire...

Can't see how you square it with the 4 colour theorem (sorry, that's the sad maths geek in me, I'll get me coat, erm anorak).

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/01/2010 20:32

Ahh but MilaMae, you arnt boycotting them then. Because if you are buying identical products elsewhere you are buying products that ELC have more than likely designed and then sold onto other retailers, therefore still making money from it! Sorry.

fattybumbum · 18/01/2010 20:37

that globe is bloody awful

MilaMae · 18/01/2010 20:38

We're thankfully over the ELC stage now as dc are 6,6 and 5, it was Playmobil and Lego for us this year .

I used to get books and craft stuff from them but Tesco and Amazon beat them hands down.

Sassybeast · 18/01/2010 20:40

Milamae - perhaps the clue is in the name - the 'E' being the 'Early' learning centre. I don't think anything from ELC is appropriate for kids of 5 or 6 + and I'm not convinced that a 5 or 6 year old needs to study climate and geography in detail Being able to poiant to america cos that's where Barbie lives is MUCH more important dontcha think ?
