to think that Prince William should NOT leapfrog Prince Charles to the throne?

Apparently a fair proportion of the antipodean colonials seem to think that Prince Charles should be missed out and Prince William be next King. However, roughly the the same number think the Queen should not make way for either of them, so it's not all bad.

I think Prince Charles should be the next King - poor bugger's waited long enough for the job, it would be a bit harsh to be ousted by his heir!

'I think when the Queen dies it would be a wise idea to give up the monarchy.'

And seeing as that the family are billionnaires and we're in the grips of a recession, I feel the government should take a stand and end Britain's Biggest Family of Scroungers' free ride on the backs of the taxpayer.

Every time I hear someone banging on about 'benefits scroungers' I see their faces alongside Fred Godwin's, like some kind of demented version of Mt Rushmore.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2010 16:57

'Is anyone else dreading a royal bloody wedding?'

God, yes! Especially that silly, dozy, bimbo looking thing he's with, setting womanhood back about a million years.

Morloth · 18/01/2010 17:01

Actually I think if William does literally leapfrog Charles at a coronation on telly then we could continue paying them? Kinda like buskers?

expatinscotland · 18/01/2010 17:06

Great idea, Morloth! I'd be happy to throw a tuppence at him for a laugh.

"Every time I hear someone banging on about 'benefits scroungers' I see their faces alongside Fred Godwin's, like some kind of demented version of Mt Rushmore" PSML

Let's not forget, republicans, that the queen has onky been paying tax on her income for less than 20 years - previous to that she was excempt. And also she paid no inheritance tax when her mother died and left some of her estate. So bollocks to me giving a shit when skint people skimming a few bob off, if the most priveliged people in the land are on some kind of state sponsored tax dodge.

[checks bovvered bag]
nope- nothing in there.

Whatever anyone 'thinks' should happen is a moot point. That's how it is with a Monarchy.

Charles will succeed (inless he dies first) according to the tradition of primogeniture, end of.

Monarchists have to takes whoever is next thats the system. They can't pick and choose who they fancy being the next king. Those that support the system as it is have to live the consequences ie Prince Charles. Personally would bin the whole anachronistic shebang.

Too right, GetOrf!

purpleduck · 18/01/2010 19:21

Queenie's dead?

FerretingAround · 18/01/2010 20:28

Interesting that apart from 'our own dear queen', the 2 most popular royals in recent years have been people who weren't born in to it all (that old lush the Queen Mother, and that media-courting Princess D).

Personally, I think Sue Townsend had the best idea in her novel years ago - pack them all off to a tower block and make them actually work for a living.

Any news report I come across regarding Wm or Harry Hewitt just makes me feel ill.

weegiemum · 18/01/2010 20:30

I know that t makes bugger all difference whsat anyone "thinks"

But I don't want any of them.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2010 20:41

'the 2 most popular royals in recent years have been people who weren't born in to it all (that old lush the Queen Mother, and that media-courting Princess D).'

Both of them, however, having been born to earls of incredible wealth, weren't exactly your Average Jane.

In her defense, Di was an impressionable, naive, inexperienced girl who adored the father who as near as sold her off to Philip's machinations to get his own family's blood in there.

I like my dad's take on it all.

He's a first-generation American and a devout Catholic.

We went to visit some castle or other and he said, 'Who owns this?' and the docent said, 'Lord So-and-So.' So Papa said, 'Oh, okay,' and walked off.

Once we were out of earshot he quipped, 'There's only one Lord, IMO, and his name is Jesus.'

Janos · 18/01/2010 20:49

Spot on weegiemum (and anyone else who's said the same thing).

I have no opinion about the Royal Family, except that they shouldn't exist.

People still seem fascinated with them though. For some reason.

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2010 20:49

Wotcha OP

I want Charles as King. And I want him to wear a curly wig and silly hat and to grow a 'tache. Have a bit of pride in his inbred genocidal heritage.

And if possible I want the monarch to take lots of wives in quick succession, all voted in by the viewing dunces public in the manner of Britain's Got Talent. And I want Simon Cowell to officiate.

The prolem with t'monarchy is that they aren't up to date enough.

FerretingAround · 18/01/2010 21:23

Expatinscotland - yes of course I agree these weren't just milkmaids who married princes, a la Brothers Grimm. These were women who came from tired old aristo families.

My point was just that they weren't 'of royal blood' in a direct sense. So why do monarchists hymn them?

But all aristos are related. In fact, ALL of us are related, if you go back far enough.

My Dad's take on it - going to Blenheim Palace in 1981, my Mum and I loved the gardens, but Dad would not go into the house: because it was built on the blood, sweat and tears of the peasantry (i.e. us).

Like SoH, I think that if we must have a monarchy, it should be one with periwigs and ruffles and all.

Otherwise - a la lanterne!

merryberry · 18/01/2010 22:25

lol journo. i have a well cared for wall, just waiting for spare royals or 4th estaters who care to saunter by and have a nice rest against it
