I just can't do slow and steady. I can't do 'some' chocolate etc. One square is enough to set me off and I scoff the lot. Once I have lost that initial 5lbs I am on a high and have no problem losing the rest of the weight.

I know the received wisdom is that crash diets don't work, but they do for me!

look here

I used it to lose weight very successfully in the past and am again now. You can sign up for free for 24 hours and when you put in all your details the site will tell you how many calories you should eat to lose your target weight and also help you to work out how to eat those calories healthily.

Just have a look.

"Reduce your calories to 1100 a day - you'll lose weight pretty swiftly. That's not what I consider starvation though - do you? "

No never said I did.

OP posts:
ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/01/2010 17:30

Starvation is consuming too few calories to function. Are you reading my posts?

If you are proposing to reduce your calorie intake to an unsafe level you are proposing to starve yourself.

bellavita · 10/01/2010 17:30

Smaller portions definitely.

Make some veg soup - nice and thick. I would have a cup of this just before lunch and whilst making tea. Then you are not as hungry when it comes to eating a plate full of dinner.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/01/2010 17:31

So be clear - are you talking a crash diet a la posh where you eat nothing but a few lettuce leaves, or are you in fact talking about a significant reduction in calories but in a healthy way?

CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:31

baddietbuddy - I've tried em all, safe and so called sensible don't work for me. Too slow with results. I get impatient and give up.

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:32

What;s an unsafe calorie level?

No as above not just lettuce leaves, other stuff too - see earlier post. With cheese etc, still counts as salad?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/01/2010 17:32

You will be trapped in this cycle forever then. You don't gain weight overnight - why do you expect to lose it overnight?

Your attitude is mad frankly. Very unhealthy and completely pointless.

badietbuddy · 10/01/2010 17:33

Then you need to address your impatience issue really. By saying that other methods don't work but staration does you are contradicting yourself. Starvation does nto work in the long term, or you wouldn't be considering doing it again. Presumably you have put the weight back on from last time you did this?

CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:33

"By Wineonafridaynight Sun 10-Jan-10 17:27:11
It depends. What are you putting in your salads? If you are suggesting you only eat a few lettuce leaves each meal then you probably are being unreasonable!

But salads can be very healthy, very good for you and very filling. Will you eat some sort of meat or fish with your salad (e.g. chicken, tuna, smoked salmon)?

Also I love mixed beans, potato salad, sweetcorn, grated corrots, hard boiled egg chopped in slices, red peppers sliced."

YY all that stuff - works for me.

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:34

Oh believe me I can gain weight very fast!

Not unusual to gain 5lb overnight. Not impossible to lose it within a week.

OP posts:
ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/01/2010 17:34

Calories are calories - doesn't matter where they come from. Seriously, look at the link I posted above. it's totally free and will answer all your questions especially for your age, weight and height etc which we can't do. But for a general rule - unsafe is less than 1100 a day for a moderately active person who is not obese. If you are obese or very active you will need more.

Whether you eat salad or any other type of healthy meals, reduce the calories in them and reduce snacks and you will lose weight. It doesn't have to be torture. You can even eat normal food

CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:35

Kat - you still haven't explained what you think an unhealthy calorie level is?

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:36

sorry x posts

I should say that I am no dieting virgin myself, and have suffered very badly with eating disorders in the past. But I have lost (quite easily) 3 stone since the middle of October, taking me back down to below what I weighed before getting pg with my ds. I eat loads, I just eat the right stuff, which does usually include a salad a day. But salad all the time is madness.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/01/2010 17:37

Yeah but that 5lb is water retention. It is physically impossible to gain 5lb of fat overnight. You would have to eat hundreds of thousands of calories in 24 hours. The reason you 'gain' and 'lose' weight so fast is that your body retains and loses water depending on your lifestyle - eg alcohol or salty food can cause retention for a day or two, then a 'loss' will show when it goes back to normal.

If you have an unhealthy lifestyle generally (lots of booze, takeaways etc) your water levels will be all over the place, making the scales go nuts. But it isn't real weight.

CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:37

"Whether you eat salad or any other type of healthy meals, reduce the calories in them and reduce snacks and you will lose weight. It doesn't have to be torture. You can even eat normal food "

So it's ok to cut out choclate then? I don't like diets which molly coddle you and say you can eat choclate. Chocolate, or sugar actually, has NO nutritional value at all.

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:39

LOL @ isn't real weight!

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:39

Fair enough baddietbuddy. But I like salad. And it is healthy, and can be varied and balanced.

OP posts:
WhereYouLeftIt · 10/01/2010 17:41

CaptA quote - "not unusual to gain 5lb overnight". This 5lb is not true body weight but variations in how hydrated/dehydrated you are.

A lb of body weight roughly equates to 3,500 kCal. You'd be hard-pressed to have consumed 17,500 extra kCal in one day.

badietbuddy · 10/01/2010 17:41

I suggest you try and educate yourself a bit before you start ROFLing Capt. Noone can gain 5 pounds overnight. I imagine you are weighing yourself every day and seeing the natural fluctuations and freaking out.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2010 17:41

salad doesnt fill you up - even a cheese/chicken one

better to try and do portion control

to lose weight you need to eat less and exercise more

try ww and eat 20points a day and you will lose weight

or 1200 calories

CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:43

WhereYouLeftIt yes 17k of calories in a day would be tricky even for me.

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:45

I've never bothered with exercise. I am active anyway.

WW lets you eat bits of choc and crap and costs money. Not saying it's not helpful for some but just not for me.

I do find salads filling. Portion control is a problem for me. I like to eat lots. If I eat lots of salady things I feel satisfied but have consumed fewer calories I find.

OP posts:
CaptainAdorable · 10/01/2010 17:46

I never rofl'd. I don't like the term.
