AIBU to refuse to clean the Hamster out?

squirrelfeatures · 08/01/2010 17:24

My DW insisted on buying a hamster for our DS (2yrs at the time). I knew from past hamster owning experiences she would not clean it out on a regular basis and I would have to do it. I clearly stated I thought it was a bad idea to get said rodent and wouldn't be cleaning it out as I don't like them myself and I knew DS would get bored with it after a week or so. Now when the Hamster stinks to high heaven and hasn't been cleaned out for a month AIBU not to do it?

yabu

POOR HAMSTER

how long does it take? a few minutes?

diddl · 08/01/2010 17:29

Why won´t your wife do it?

steamedxmaspudding · 08/01/2010 17:29

Clean it out. Then give it away to a good home.

YANBU to not want to clean it out but YABU to leave it living in its own dirt - it's not the hamster's fault and it is cruel of you to leave it. If your daughter can't look after it properly you should give it to someone who can.

LetThereBeRock · 08/01/2010 17:30

YABVU. It's cruel to neglect an animal just to make a point.

Clean the cage out asap and find a new home for it.

steamedxmaspudding · 08/01/2010 17:31

Sorry, meant your DS not your DD (don't know where that came from!). Two years old is a bit too young for a hamster anyway. If your wife neglects it then I'm afraid it's up to you to do the right thing!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 08/01/2010 17:37

Never mind rights or wrongs of whose fault it is, just take the initiative and clean the poor thing out. It didn't ask to go to a neglectful home.

Try and find someone who really wants a pet, poor thing

OP, someone in the Pets thread is looking for a hamster.

weefriend · 08/01/2010 17:43

Oh FGS clean it out then find it a better home. Unbelievable! YABVVVU as is your DW of course.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/01/2010 17:44

Yes you are being unreasonable.
The bloody thing got cleaned out last week (admittedly by you)
but in my defense I had a baby on the 20th December. Said baby got admitted into hospital on New Years day with bronchiolitis so have had other things on my mind.
Poor Harry is not mistreated and DS hasnt lost interest in him!!
You are evil.

YABU

You are making the hamster suffer to prove a point.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 08/01/2010 17:50
Shock
diddl · 08/01/2010 17:51

Oh FFS!

Poor thing to be with you two!

"The bloody thing"

squirrelfeatures · 08/01/2010 17:52

ok, so I don't let it go for a month and do relent and clean it out in the interests of Harry's welfare, if I did refuse to do it though I don't think that's unreasonable...

diddl · 08/01/2010 17:54

Of course YABU if something more important comes up for your wife.

squirrelfeatures · 08/01/2010 17:55

Ok public appology, was my bad to come on and post in AIBU as DW uses this forum alot and doesn't need me creating some kind of backlash against her over the hamster. So sorry.

I agree that you ought to rehome it.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 08/01/2010 18:03

"Evil"?????

Jux · 08/01/2010 18:03

You can't leave it like that. Find it a new home. (But clean it out first.)

Earlybird · 08/01/2010 18:04

Unbelievably petty not to clean the cage.

Unbelievably childish and passive aggressive to post about it here.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/01/2010 18:15

Ok.

The hamster is not in a dirty cage.
He is very much a loved and wanted pet.
Ds would be very much gutted if we were to give him away, he loves to give him bits of apple and lettuce etc and always gives an airkiss in the direction of Harrys cage when he goes to bed.

Yes DH was "evil" (in the mildest possible way) to post such a silly OP on here about something that isnt true. When ive told him what AIBU is like.

Im going to go away and kill my husband now. Or maybe just moan about him on my postnatal thread havent decided which one seems more appealing.
