AIBU to refuse to clean the Hamster out?

My DW insisted on buying a hamster for our DS (2yrs at the time). I knew from past hamster owning experiences she would not clean it out on a regular basis and I would have to do it. I clearly stated I thought it was a bad idea to get said rodent and wouldn't be cleaning it out as I don't like them myself and I knew DS would get bored with it after a week or so. Now when the Hamster stinks to high heaven and hasn't been cleaned out for a month AIBU not to do it?

Squirrel and Ferret, who does cleans out the hamster?

Mishy1234 · 08/01/2010 18:27

YABVU.

The poor hamster is suffering and you have a responsibility to ensure it has a clean environment to live in. Stop using a live animal to play silly games with your DW and clean it out.

I suggest you then do the responsible thing and give it away to a good home.

Claw, Under normal circumstances myself and DS clean the hamster out.

To everyone else.. For the love of God, the hamster is CLEAN!!! and the only way he leaves this home is when he shifts from this mortal coil and becomes an ex-hamster, which hopefully wont be for a long while yet.

Mishy1234 · 08/01/2010 18:34

Ah, OK just read Mrs AmazingBouncingFerret's posts. Mr ABF, YABVU and if the hamster does indeed need cleaning out, get on and do it without playing silly games with your DW.

If your DS is indeed still interested in owning the hamster, it is your duty as an adult to ensure that together with your DW the hamster continues (as it seems to have been until now) to be well looked after.

Help your DW out when she needs it!

Ah right, got it i think. You never cleaning the hamster = youve asked your DH to do it once and he is complaining!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/01/2010 18:48

The agreement we made when I returned home from town with the little lovable furry thing was that DH would never clean him out and that he was mine and DS responsibility.
He cleaned him out last week because I, quite frankly couldnt be arsed to do anything other than have baths, feed DD and laze about on the sofa. DH likes to tease me and hasnt let me hear the end of it.
I dont think he quite believed he would get such a response on here and has retreated to DS's room to play dinosaurs with his tail between his legs.

Hassled · 08/01/2010 18:50

Ferret - if my DH came on MN and posted about my alleged failures in the pet-keeping department then I would eat him alive. I would be a flying ball of rage and fury. So I'm very impressed by your restraint.

duchesse · 08/01/2010 18:51

Obviously 2 is waaaay to young for a pet, by about ten years.

Give the hamster to someone who wants it and will look after it. The hamster should not suffer from neglect because neither of you can behave like adults. Problem solved.

Ha ha!

Poor misunderstood squirrel

CommonNortherner · 08/01/2010 19:28

Is this serious? Your wife had a baby right before Christmas who then became ill and you're bitching on an internet forum that she's not cleaned out a hamster cage and think the backlash will be against her?!?!

diddl · 08/01/2010 19:52

The animals here are the responsibility of myself & the children-husband didn´t want them.

But blöödy hell, he´s not so inhumane/stubborn as to not help out if for some reason I can´t just because the agreement was that it isn´t his responsibility FFS!

agedknees · 08/01/2010 19:55

Squirrelfeatures sounds more like weasel features to me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2010 20:00

yabvu squirrel

your dw (ferret) has just had a baby

yabvu as well by posting about it on mn - even jokingly

i would be furious if my dh decided to come on as mr blondes and start slagging me off - even if you are joking

either way, clean the hamster out if it hasnt been cleaned, it takes less than 5 mins

claw3 · 08/01/2010 20:48

Oh your DW has just had a baby, shame on you, you should be retreating to play dinosaurs too!

Boys2mam · 08/01/2010 20:56

I found out I was pg in Jan 08, one mth after getting the kitten I had bullied persuaded DP into agreeing to.

DP thought I had done it on purpose to get out of cleaning the litter tray
