To think snow + ice = stupid people day?

KimiLovesHerFamily · 08/01/2010 17:07

So we have about an inch and a half of solid ice over most of the roads and all of the pavements here and so far I have seen...

A car trying to do 30mph at least along my road, (volvo estate) and when he got to the junction he just slid across it because he could not stop, thankfully nothing coming the other way.

Two girls (about 15 years old) walking along in short skirts Ugg boots and little jackets. They were clearly shivering

On having to go in to town today (dressed in ski clothing and strong walking boots) I saw two women in a car trying to get in to a way too small parking space as an old bloke walked very slowly across the road behind them and almost got run over

A woman letting a child of about 3 push a little one of about 10 months in a pushchair down a sloping bridge

Endless women in stupid boots with hills tottering along like bimbos on ice

And two children eating McDonalds ice cream!!

Is it me or does the snow do something to people to make them more stupid then usual?

I did have a chuckle at a woman trying to walk along in stiletto boots! What a loon!

potplant · 08/01/2010 17:13

I was with you up till the McDonalds ice cream. McFlurry's are never out of season!

Khara · 08/01/2010 17:14

My mum was telling me that in the winter of 1963 when ice lay on the ground for about two months, she spent the entire time in stillettos (shoes not boots.) She was only 21 at the time but still...

Lizzylou · 08/01/2010 17:14

YOu're not wrong, have seen people overtaking buses when they can't see if anything coming.
People in cars (a few 4x4's too) driving along snowy roads on mobile phones.

A young girl of about 15 in ballet flats and no socks/tights and just a cardigan (no coat) sliding down an icy hill, on a day when it was -8c!.

A neighbour has cleared their drive and path, leaving all the snow in a massive (now rock solid) mound completely obstructing the pavement (most people are walking past to get their cars on the main road as our estate is pretty much snowed in).

Lots of idiots around

sowhatitsonlysnow · 08/01/2010 17:14

I agree with you on the footwear thing, I have my walking boots firmly laced up.

KimiLovesHerFamily · 08/01/2010 17:14

Admits to having a frappachino coffee in Starbucks but these kids were walking alond eating ice cream like it was July!!!!

when i was out at hogmanay i saw numerous peole pushing prams and buggys, it was 11.30pm, and it was -6 some people dont have a clue!!

Morloth · 08/01/2010 17:26

What is bad about pushing a buggy when it is -6?

Kimi DS prefers ice cream in the winter, he takes him forever to finish one and when it is cold it doesn't melt all over him.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 08/01/2010 17:28

I have my walking boots on today and STILL fell over - slap bang on my back - legs up in the air- back of head cracked on pavement. Very scary.

There are simply a lot of people around who have no idea how to drive on icy roads. They somehow seem to think that because they are in their car the ice has disappeared. You could not pay me to drive today.

juneybean · 08/01/2010 17:30

There's a professional window cleaner who lives along the street and he has a particular van which he fills with water every day.

And every day water ends up pissing all over the street.

Yes he's still doing in this weather, the street has trenches for tires to drive along and his water is pissing into these trenches.

What a fucking idiot.

Toffeepopple · 08/01/2010 17:48

I have seen someone in shorts and someone in sandals today. Madness!

I did push a buggy though. Not sure why I shouldn't? DD is safer in there than walking, as the buggy gives me more stability so I'm less likely to pull her over if I fall. She had on a vest, thermal vest, t-shirt, wooly jumper, coat, salopettes, tights, socks, hat, scarf, gloves and snow boots. She was not cold.

slummymummy36 · 08/01/2010 18:37

LOL at the stillettos! Perhaps people think the heels will work like ice picks??

thirdname · 08/01/2010 18:41

wel, 15 y old girtl I can understand, but 7 year old girls with short skirts and socks at dc school. PArent should have more sense than a 15 y old??

dexter73 · 08/01/2010 18:46

The woman I saw in stilettoes was halfway up the hill into town and appeared to be stuck. I think she might still be there!

SuperflousBuns · 08/01/2010 18:51

Mummysgoingmad, I may have been one of those mad pram pusherson hogmanay, actually no -6 is considered tropical up here!!!

-13 today and had to go to shop with a very wrapped up DD in her very cosy pram, am not sure why you have a problem with prams being pushed in these conditions or was it simply that it was hogmanay and Mummys should clearly have been tucked up with their horlicks watching tv?

elvislives · 08/01/2010 18:57

I was thinking this myself on the drive home from work. So many pedestrians with a death wish. Yes the cars are all creeping along at 15 mph but that's because they cannot stop...it doesn't mean you can stroll across the crossing on a green (for cars) light. I'm quite sure that if I slide into you at 15mph you will still get damaged.

Also the car following me so close I couldn't see it in my mirrors. What planet are these people on?

lobsters · 08/01/2010 19:48

I was slightly astounded when I saw a man taking the top down on his car yesterday and was about to drive off. We must have had about a foot of snow this week. There was a little part of me hoping that a gritter would come the other was as he was driving along, that would ruin the leather trim

SparklyGothKat · 08/01/2010 19:52

I pushed a pushchair today, my 3 wheeler, it handled the snow great and Ds2 was warm and snug.

Haven't seen much silliness TBH as I have been indoors for 3 days, had to get out today as I was getting cabinfever

I saw a topless man with in shorts and no shoes with 'Teresa May (some derogatory term) MP' scrawled over his chest in biro walking out of the town hall and down the road

I was [shocked] so much so i cant remember what he called her

KimiLovesHerFamily · 08/01/2010 20:18

I don't see anything wrong with people taking babies out in prams/pushchairs but I would not let a child of about 3 push it along on a hill with a baby in it.

My postman was in shorts today and on his push bike brave/daft man

haven't read all the posts but would like to add, DD on swings about a week ago, still cold and parents put their DD on the swing with no tights, just ankle socks! what do you say.

read the first posts and can only add these things happen all the time but because we are "inside" we are noticing these lunatic acts.

noone has a proper winter coat, i mean COAT anymore. seems ok to wear small jacket meant for autumn warm evening. madness.

I saw a mum tottering along on the thick ice with a very young baby in a sling. I was praying that she got home without slipping over on her front...
