to think that people are unaware how desperate things are for birds?

The RSPB are saying that food and water we provide can be the difference between life and death for garden birds at the moment.

Advice here about what you may already have in the house that could help.

They also need water to drink, and, just as importantly, bathe and perform 'feather maintenance.'

There is also a thread about this in chat, but I don't imagine anyone minds a bit more bumping of this topic.

Brilliant! We've had bluetits again, a robin, blackbirds, a thrush and a starling

Me and DD made bird cake yeaterday with veg suet, chopped apple, grated cheese, oats and a few brown bread crumbs. She was so excited to see the robin come to get some.

We even had a thrush today.

PhaseolusLunatus · 14/01/2010 15:00

Blondes, I'm so excited! [face of hope]

nope buggered off again, back to his tree and the birds are watching me again!!!!

but maybe, just maybe he will tell his bird friends on the tree that it is safe haven!!

Whippet · 14/01/2010 15:38

Bella - we've done the BigBirdWatch for about 3 years now - it's a family tradition!

We get up on the Sat or Sun morning and take a 'special breakfast' e.g. croissants etc into the kids playroom (which overlooks the garden/birdfeeder). DH then puts loads of food out, and we watch and tick our sheets

The DS1 (10) is given the 'responsibility' of uploading the data onto the website

(But I don't tell everyone in RL about it of course!!)

Poppity · 15/01/2010 08:52

Anyone know how long I should leave food out before I clear it away and replace it?

How about if it gets rained on?

So far I am putting a bit of fresh out each day, and removing the 3 day old stuff (am putting it on saucers on my childrens' outdoor table, it's like a tea party).

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2010 11:55

poppity i clear away uneaten food every day and give fresh

and the ungrateful buggers ignore it day afterday, tho as you can see from my pic i posted, a blackbird did come near my table lol

again i have put on bird seed, nuts and some lard/fat ball thing

Poppity · 15/01/2010 18:37

yes, I am putting out far too much. Now I have finally tempted them in I don't want them to think I'm stingy!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/01/2010 13:51

domesticextremist · 16/01/2010 17:13

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/01/2010 18:09

bellabelly · 31/01/2010 16:06

Have just remembered that it's the BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH this weekend - reckon there's just enough daylight left for me to start counting em. Thought i'd post on here in case others have forgotten all about it too!
