No hormones, no remembering to take a pill. It stays in for 10 yrs as well.

But it works by preventing implantation, not ovulation or fertilisation, which crosses it off my list, so I can't agree that it's "best".

maristella · 08/01/2010 15:08

was it / is it comfortable?
i know it makes absolute sense to have one but i'm a tad scared!

MamaLazarou · 08/01/2010 15:09

I had a horrible, horrible experience with one.

But no, YANBU, if it works for you.

maristella · 08/01/2010 15:11

AMum - yes i had heard that. a friend had one and believed that she had actually fallen pregnant many times (eggs didn't implant) so her hormones were up and down the whole time she was on it.

lottiebunny · 08/01/2010 15:16

I hope YANBU, I'm booked in to have one fitted next Monday. Goodbye, nasty hormones!

BigusBumus · 08/01/2010 15:16

I rate the Mirena IUS. No cycle (no periods!) so no PMT, no weight gain, no acne. No ovulation and no implantation. The hormones the it releases only work locally, so only within the womb and ovaries. Perfect for me! (though not for everyone I know....)

pooexplosions · 08/01/2010 15:19

If the egg doesn't implant, arguably you are not pregnant, fertilised or not. If you have IVF and implant a fertilised egg/zygote/whatever, if it doesn't implant you are not pregnant.

FlamingoBingo · 08/01/2010 15:21

YABU. It's better than others IMO, but still pretty shit. Heavy periods . Hate having something foreign in my body. Best of a bad lot for me!

holliejobber · 08/01/2010 15:45

It didn't hurt to have it fitted. But I don't know anyone else with it so just wanted to get peoples experiences/opinions really.

kateyjane · 08/01/2010 15:50

YABU - (Sorry if TMI) but mine came out with my tampon! Good job I noticed as now expecting no.4

maristella · 08/01/2010 16:12

the security it gives definitely appeals to me, as getting pg right now is not an option.
mirena sounds good - i might brave it.
i went to have one fitted after having ds, but the practitioner said they'd rather not fit one in someone who looked so frightened!

maristella · 08/01/2010 16:12

oh - one more question:
do they tickle blokes???? iykwim!

AstronomyDomine · 08/01/2010 16:15

it's fab - don't have to remember to take the pill and the only side effect is longer periods (but much lighter).
And no - I haven't had any reports of tickling

pooexplosions · 08/01/2010 16:15

no. not even close.

muggglewump · 08/01/2010 16:15

I got pg with one in, found out at 19 weeks, TOP at 23 weeks.

I wouldn't recommend it.

mosschops30 · 08/01/2010 16:16

I loved my mirena and will be having another one fitted soon
Dh used to say he could sometimes feel the wires poking him and i used to say 'dont flatter yourself darling'
but the doc did tell me that if he could feel it she could trim the wires shorter

Wolliw · 08/01/2010 17:03

YANBU
I'm on my second copper coil. I had my first before I had my babies because I can't have hormonal contraceptive in any form because it clashes with my epilepsy drugs.

It's not for everyone, but I love my coil. I can forget about contraception for 10 years.

Picante · 08/01/2010 17:06

I did love the idea. It didn't hurt that much to have it fitted.

I am now having the period from hell. First one since the coil and it's gone on for two weeks now. It's horrible.

I'm going to give it another couple of months but if they are still this heavy I'm going to have it taken out.

wishingchair · 08/01/2010 17:07

Mirena was not for me - made me feel very depressed and lethargic.

Paolosgirl · 08/01/2010 17:08

Nope - vasectomy gets my vote every time.

windywendy · 08/01/2010 17:19

YABVU - the impant is by far the best contraceptive of all time.

Failing that, abstinence is pretty effective

windywendy · 08/01/2010 17:20

Obviously, IABU - I mean impLant,not impant

cinnamon81 · 08/01/2010 20:26

I got one fitted, it punctured my uterus when they put it in and I had to go through two operations to remove it. So I'm on the pill with related moodswings and all.

Although I did think it was such a perfect method of contraception until I got one. YANBU to love it. I would if mines had actually gone right!

memoo · 08/01/2010 20:44

Not sure really, I had a coil fitted and a year later got pregnant even though the coil was still in place! The pregnancy was ectopic, it ruptured my left tube and I nearly died from internal bleeding....

So from my point of view uabu

Oooh I'm in a lovely jolly mood tonight aren't I

Mamazon · 08/01/2010 20:47

ive got a mirena and im not enjoying it.
I have loads of headaches, im getting spots for the first time in my life and im moody as hell.

on the plus side, it seems to be working, im not getting periods and i can't forget to take it.
