No hormones, no remembering to take a pill. It stays in for 10 yrs as well.

Do you know when you are standing on a tall building or ledge, peering over. And you get the weird feeling that your going to jump. Thats how I feel when I feel the wires of my coil, I want to pull. Its freaking me out.

mmmmm very interesting thread...

I have been trying to decide what to do for contraception now.

My dc's are 4.10, 3.5 and 1.5 and I don't want any more but I'm not sure enough to send DH for the snip just yet

Before getting pg I was on Microgynon for a long time and I became so crabby and had horrendous mood swings which I eventually worked out were related to the pill. Tried a couple of other types but no difference till I came off them to get pg and swore I would never take hormones again!

Have been using the withdrawal method but would prefer something safer. I also have incredibly heavy periods, with clots etc lasting about 9 days. My doctor sis, recommended the coil, citing 'no periods' etc so I was going to look into it but from this thread that certainly doesn't seem the case!

I am also overweight and don't want anything that would make me more likely to gain weight as I am struggling to lose it anyway. Although getting pg wouldn't exactly help!!

Any ideas?

I had a Mirena and from my perspective it was brilliant - DH, however, found it very uncomfortable and there is not much point of a contraceptive that puts one of you off sex !! DH had the snip this week which I'm hoping will be the greatest form of contraceptive ever!!

Turniphead1 · 09/01/2010 10:47

I had a Mirena fitted a month ago. So far its OK, have been spotting bleeding for most of that time (although had one massive blood loss - as in whole trousers soaked - very odd). Have gained weight but that might be Christmas. Have also no sex drive, but had it fitted under general at the same time as gynae op (perineal and posterior repair of damage caused by childbirth) - so still sore down below. I am hoping it will work out as not keen on snip for DH even though we have completed our family. BUt that is next step if this doesn't work out.
haven't had sex yet (due to op) so don't know about the wires thing - but consultant said he can trim them if there is a problem.
I do think you read more negative thing than positive about Mirena on the internet. My consultant said about 1 or 2 women out of 10 don't like it for various reasons - which is a fairly high proportion. But those that it does suit love it (for obvious reasons).

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 09/01/2010 10:47

I have a Mirena coil.
I have no periods and it's great not having to think abut contraception at all.

I am a bit overweight, spotty and moody...but I've thought every type of contraception I've used has made me like this, including condoms!!

Highlander · 09/01/2010 11:05

I have a copper coil. The constant bleeding took a year to settle down, but I have horrible cramping in the days before my period is due, and my ovulation pains are worse as well.

I also have become very spotty (kind of like rosacea).

i think I'll have it out and go back to condoms. My big anxiety is that the pain would mask any symptoms of ovarian caNCER.

Tortington · 09/01/2010 11:10

it was 5 yrs back inth olden days with an anual check up yer va j j

anyway, i think YABU - vasectomy is the way to go that way you dont have to put up with doctors fingers up yer vadg

expatinscotland · 09/01/2010 11:13

vasectomy rocks!

clankypanky · 09/01/2010 12:07

expat (and anyone else) can you tell me what is wrong with cerazette? Ive just been prescribed it for possible endometriosis but havent started using it yet...what can I expect?

expatinscotland · 09/01/2010 12:14

some people love cerazette and get no periods on it.

i never stopped bleeding, developed horrid acne, mood swings and again, no sex drive.

basically every side effect i had on the Mirena.

Concordia · 09/01/2010 16:30

i was on cerazette for a year or so.
it really killed my libido, which was a bit of a shame as we'd not been married long.
also , i think it made me a bit moody and sometimes a bit weird, i remember getting strange thoughts about wanting to drive onto the pavement to run over pedestrians (not that i ever did hasten to add, and since coming off it have never had them again) so all in all was not for me.
bit reluctant to try any form of hormonal contraception after that experience.
at the moment we are trying the 2 DC under 4 contraceptive method. it is working well

PuppyMonkey · 09/01/2010 16:36

Trust me, getting your other half to have the snip is the best form of contraception. And it lasts way longer than ten years.

kellze · 17/01/2010 03:12

Mine came out and didn't notice and I am now 29 weeks pregnant.

Still not sure how I missed it coming out.

missdduke · 17/01/2010 08:53

I had a copper coil put in last week, i'm still spotting - how long will it go on for?

I'm very hopeful that if my first period isn't too bad (and this spotting stops) this is me sorted for 10years!

Not had sex yet, but hubby has felt for string and can barely feel them (excellent cos i was feeling a bit freaky about the whole string thing)

detoxdiva · 17/01/2010 09:05

Hollie I agree - the best contraceptive I've ever had too No pain to fit or remove, no heavy periods, no worries!

BrahmsThirdRacket · 17/01/2010 14:49

I love mine too - haven't checked the strings for a while, may have to do that tonight...

bargainhuntingbetty · 17/01/2010 14:54

kellze at yours coming out and you not noticing. How long had it been in for before it came out????

Species8472 · 17/01/2010 17:34

I love the copper coil

I had one before I had my DD as I got fed up with the pill hormones. If you haven't had kids the fitting is a bit painful and I had bad period-like cramps for a few hours afterwards, but after that it was fine. Periods bit longer but really no other problems. You can totally forget about it, but they do advise that you check you can feel the threads every month or so.

Had one fitted a few weeks after DD - not painful at all, but can't comment on the periods yet 6 months in as am still bf and haven't had any yet.

Sorry to hear other people have had bad problems, but I think these are very rare.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2010 17:41

'Sorry to hear other people have had bad problems, but I think these are very rare.'

There are well-recognised side effects that are far from 'very rare'.

One quite common side effect with copper coil is heavier periods.

For some, the periods because too heavy for them.

If you read the leaflet that accompanies the device there's a list of recognised side effects.

Ditto the Mirena.

It's like any other form of contraception: there is the potentential for side effects/risk.

peachygirl · 17/01/2010 17:56

I had a copper coil fitted a couple of months ago and so far so good. My periods are heavier but last the same amount of time. I keep telling myself to give it a good 6 months before it settles down.

I had an implant before I had DCs and bled for 9 months out of a year and as the mirena has the same homones I went for the copper coil with the Drs approval.

I have certainly recently got my libido back which has been lacking for sometime.

Morloth · 17/01/2010 18:14

I find spending time with other people's children to be the most effective birth control personally.

Pretty much all hormonal birth control makes me crazy, have tried so many over the years. So when we are not trying to get pregnant we use condoms and live dangerously.

Once this bubs is done cooking DH is off for the snip.

gobsmackedetal · 17/01/2010 18:39

It's vasectomy for me all the way. No hormonal issues, no pills to take and no invasive medical procedures (well, not for me anyway )

The other one I like is condoms. I hate the idea of messing with my body iykwim. I suppose IABabitU

expatinscotland · 17/01/2010 18:46

Amen, gob! Vasectomy brill.

Jojay · 17/01/2010 18:47

I've just had the implant put in and no problems yet.

It lasts for 3 years, no periods at all after the first 2/3 months, and a 5 min procedure to have it put in / taken out of your arm.

No weird strings either.

I'm pretty optimistic for this one.
