To think that these are fine as meals and that my 'friend' was rude

My friend came over earlier and was trying to persuade me to go to the supermarket with her. I refused because I didn't need to and didn't want to.

She then looked in my fridge and said "well what are you planning to cook for dinner then? You don't have any food in the house"

I told her (pasta with the bacon, broccoli and philly tonight and veg, lentil and tomato soup for tomorrow) plus pointed out that I had stew and chili frozen as well as mince, chops and diced turkey in the freezer.

She laughed and said "Oh so you're just not going to bother feeding the kids proper food because you can't be bothered to go shopping then"

WTF??

Eh? She can cock off, I reckon. Sounds fine to me.

Georgimama · 06/01/2010 15:37

Your friend is rude, and clearly cannot cook if she couldn't see that you were perfectly able to make delicious and nutritious meals out of those ingredients. Ignore.

louloulouise · 06/01/2010 15:38

Eh? All sounds fine to me, sounds like 'proper' food. Maybe she just didn't fancy it and wanted to choose her own stuff? A bit ungrateful of your friend if she was staying with you!

JaneS · 06/01/2010 15:40

They sound yummy meals! Maybe she doesn't know very much about nutrition? Obv. you wouldn't feed your kids pasta forever, but don't see a problem other than that.

mummyflood · 06/01/2010 15:40

Not proper food?? sounds great to me, take no notice!

SmacOnTheLipsUnderTheMistletoe · 06/01/2010 15:40

Ignore her. What an odd thing to say anyway!

SerenityNowAKABleh · 06/01/2010 15:40

Well, what is proper food then? Is she going to volunteer to come around a cook a five course meal including Lobster Thermidor?

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/01/2010 15:40

She is a cheeky cow. What is her definition of proper food then, bernard matthews choice cuts and chips?

MrsKitty · 06/01/2010 15:41

What did she have in mind? Your meals sound great .

fernie3 · 06/01/2010 15:41

they sound like lovely meals! mine are having pasta with ham peas and cheese tonight

Honeypeckle · 06/01/2010 15:42

Err what on earth does she cook then?

FernieB · 06/01/2010 15:44

Your friend is out of of line. Why is she looking in your fridge anyone? Your food sounds yummy and healthy and if my DD wasn't cooking spag bol tonight, I would be coming round.

What does your friend call proper food?

Pikelit · 06/01/2010 15:45

If that's not proper food, I don't know what it. For sure, it's a vast improvement on the Red Soup and fried eggs on toast that will be on tonight's menu round here.

Nefertari · 06/01/2010 15:45

Sounds like proper food to me! I'm also doing pasta, with some defrosted mince and a home made tomato sauce (including some hidden carrot...). Off to chop the onions

ShutUpandDrinkYourGin · 06/01/2010 15:45

what does she mean? that it's too much work or not enough? What does she normally cook?

sounds delicious btw

SleepyCaz · 06/01/2010 15:46

She sounds like a rude bitch. They sound lovely tasty dinners. In fact, DH and I have the Philly Cookbook and use it a lot.

Seems like she was blackmaailing you into going shopping with her because she didn't want to go alone.

Nasty cow

claireybaubles · 06/01/2010 15:46

Loulou she isn't staying with me just popped round and wanted me to go to asda with her (don't know why!)

Glad you all think it's odd, it was one of those situations where I was outraged and then started wondering if she had a point iyswim.

She was incredibly kind to me when we first met which is why we are friends but the more I get to know her the odder she seems!

ILoveGregoryHouse · 06/01/2010 15:48

wtf? That IS proper food. She's crackers. And rude.

santasmagicnappysack · 06/01/2010 15:48

YANBU - your menu sounds lovely. You are cooking from scratch, can't argue with that. Oooh I want the pasta, might have to try that recipe.

BigBadMummy · 06/01/2010 15:49

Unless it was an excuse to get you out food shopping so she could pay for it all for you as a late Christmas present she can fuck off in my book.

Your menu sounds lovely.

What time shall we get there to share?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 06/01/2010 15:49

Can I come to you for tea that all sounds yummy.

We might be a bit thin on the bacon if you all come, I only have 3 rashers

Perhaps her idea of 'proper' food is similar to my DH's and Mil's? i.e. Chicken nuggets with chips - far better than cheese salad sarnies according to mil. They need proper hot, cooked meals you know

Dh thinks that I should feed dd2 solely on fish fingers and beans, because she always eats them. Whereas she will occassionally leave stews/casseroles etc.

Your meals sound great to me. Infact can we come for tea? We really do have no food in the house.

loubielou31 · 06/01/2010 15:59

Like many I'm curious to know what you should be feeding your children. What do hers eat?
