I mean, the kids are back at school and therefore in bed early - and its on NOW - there was hardly anything on the telly that DD would have enjoyed over xmas (we missed the gruffalo) and they put this onw NOW

Also, who is the voice of the beaver? is that Bob hoskins?

sanfairyann · 05/01/2010 20:39

lucyellensmumagain · 05/01/2010 20:48

hmmmm, ray winstone or bob hoskins, i'll lisgten closer - the she beaver sounds familiar too - this was - is, my absolute favourite book ever - have read about three quarters to DD but she is a bit young - to be honest, i think she might have been a bit scared by this (shes 4 and a bit of a wuss!) So yay BBC3!! i can watch it in peace!

It was on over the Christmas period too. I can't remember on which channel.

pofarced · 05/01/2010 20:52

TV was dreadful over christmas - I really wonder who plans the schedules and whether they have children.

bluesuedepews · 05/01/2010 20:53

IT was on BBC1 on christmas eve, it's fat ray doing the voice.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 05/01/2010 20:53

It's a repeat. Dunno, I suppose they're just trying to fill up the schedule, it is on BBC after all

TidyBush · 05/01/2010 21:26

It was just as daft last night when they put Madagascar on.

GoddessRidingSantasSleigh · 05/01/2010 21:41

aww dd missed it on christmas eve

i'm watching it now and i'm gonna download it for her to watch this weekend i love it

my dd's 4 maybe i'll try reading her the book first, i have wonderful memories of my mum reading all of them to me

AvadaKedavra · 05/01/2010 21:54

She-Beaver was Dawn French if I recall correctly.

snowedinwithJjandtheBean · 05/01/2010 21:59

i agree with tidy bush, i know many adults who will happily watch narnia alone, but madagascar, and the gruffalo was on just before that!

moffat · 05/01/2010 22:11

YANBU - very odd timing.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 17:28

I didnt like it - i have read the book too many times maybe but i found it all too violent "in the flesh" as it were - young boys weilding swords with the intent to kill - twas not nice.

Aslan was amazing though, clever how they got that lion to let the kids ride on his back They have madagascar on tonight - my bloody TV recorder digibox peice of shit wont record for some reason though

I read TLWW when i was in primary school - also, our teacher read it too us, chapter by chapter and when it got to the turkish delight bit she bought some in for us to try - my first taste ever and its always been very magical to me since (even though it actually tastes like soap!) I had a lion that has been to australia and back with me - i called him aslan of course - and gave him to DD1 (my bloody dog ate it though, otherwise DD2 would have him now )

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (one of my favourite of the books) is being released next Christmas !

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 17:41

i love this film and adore the books!

mr beaver is ray winstone, mrs beaver is dawn french.

as a child i loved the fact that the children fought in the battles. it made a change that there were no "real" adults in the book.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 17:44

yes i know what you mean lissie, maybe the film was too real for me? maybe im just a freak!

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 17:48

lol, as an adult im a bit shocked at how violent the stories are, but i still love the fact that its the children who save the day.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 17:49

ive never read the other stories for some reason - is Aslan in them?

OP posts:
2rebecca · 06/01/2010 17:50

Our kids aren't back until tomorrow. Agree it did seem odd it wasn't on earlier as the TV schedule wasn't that great.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 17:53

yep, in all of them. i love the magicians nephew! its v odd rereading as an adult.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/01/2010 17:54

Lem you must read them. The Lion etc is actually the second book. The Magician's Nephew is a sort of prequel- explains how Narnia came to be.

Aslan is mentioned in all of them. CS Lewis was strongly religious and basically Aslan symbolises God.

I loved the books as a child - the stories are great. As an adult, the language is of course a little stuffy, but I'd still recommend. Some people don't like because of the veiled religious imagery, but I'm an atheist and it never bothered me!

I'd say they are aimed at children of around 9 and up.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 18:01

I saw a documentary about C S Lewis, and about the religious connection, the documentary tried to make the chronicles of narnia out into some sort of da vinci code. He was an atheist apparently, and was at either oxford or cambridge (not sure about that) with tolkein. It said he was an astronomer/physicist and apparently tolkein and his cronies all thought that Lewis had gone barking mad when he wrote the narnia stuff.

I've never EVER got the imagery in books, goes over my head - although when i watched it last night with Aslan sacrificing himself and then resurrecting i was a bit D'oh - oh yeah! And im supposed to be a catholic, i had honestly never even noted it before

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2010 18:05

lol LEM, in the horse and his boy there is a scene where Aslan tells Shasta that "it was i who watched over you as you slept, it was i who kept away the wolves, it was i who drove you on when you were tired" as an adult it sounded an awful like the "footprints in the sand" poem.

lucyellensmumagain · 06/01/2010 18:07

ah well, ive not read that either - lol, so it would still be lost on me!! hmmm, im not a very good catholic am i? Am definately definately going to read the rest of them though - im between books just now and nothing i have is pulling my chain. In fact, i think i have it upstairs somewhere, but i bet its abridged.
