to not do fancy dress?

friend is having a birthday party next weekend. Been planned for ages. I have managed to get kids to stay at ex-H and have said I will go (even though slightly dreading it as they are all married up couples and I am the deserted wife)

However its fancy dress. I hate fancy dress with a passion. I managed it for a friends hen night but hated it. Cant even use the same costume as its a different theme.

I've said many times I am not doing fancy dress and been told I have to, and eye rolled at.

At the end of the day, who cares surely? I mean fancy dress is only funny for the first 3 seconds you see someone it in - after that you're just a twat in a costume surely?

so AIBU to turn up to this party next weekend in my normal clothes (not least looking sexy incase some nice single men are there?!)

Oh no go in fancy dress u will stick out otherwise - whats the theme??? maybe we can help?

morleylass · 01/01/2010 19:24

I hated fancy dress until I tried it..it's great fun - you don't have to be yourself if you don't want to!

JaneiteIsTrite · 01/01/2010 19:25

YABU - fancy dress is fab. What's the theme? Do you want some ideas?

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:27

Honestly, I have tried fancy dress before and hated it - the whole wearing something uncomfortable, and inevitably a wig.

But if you can think of something that will cost me zero pence and means no wig (I have a short brown bob) along the lines of famous people (and sadly I am about 6 stone heavier than posh spice) than please give me ideas.

If i had my long hair still I would have gone as Jordan (got the boobs for it, though sadly not the waist after Christmas) but it doesnt work with a bob.

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:28

it does seem I am in the minority to hate fancy dress so much though both in real life and internet world!

Betty Boop?

ElfieDee · 01/01/2010 19:32

mia wallace?

JaneiteIsTrite · 01/01/2010 19:32

Dee-lite

Velma from Scooby Doo - not sure if she'd count though.

YANBU to hate fancy dress; it's hideous and a pain in the arse. YABU if you don't play along though. Sorry. I feel your pain!

JaneiteIsTrite · 01/01/2010 19:32

Mary Quant

thisparachuteisaknapsack · 01/01/2010 19:36

Dawn french?

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:36

ooooh, Uma thurman in Pulp Fiction is one I could do. Just a toy gun and a shirt/trousers/heels according to google images.

But see I took famous people to mean famous people, not characters out of films or books which could render this harder

60s clothes and glasses like this? Could also carry a guitar.

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:37

thisparachute I can honestly say I'm about 10 stone too light for Dawn French thank you, even with Christmas!!

ElfieDee · 01/01/2010 19:37

mia wallace is famous ......isnt she???

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:37

JaneiteIsTrite · 01/01/2010 19:38

Uma is famous though, so going as one of her characters would be fine I think.

I hate fancy dress with a passion

Just an excuse for all the young lovelies to wear something sexy and revealing !!

thisparachuteisaknapsack · 01/01/2010 19:39

You need padding. and a fringe on a slope or a vicar costume

thisparachuteisaknapsack · 01/01/2010 19:40

What about a famous scientist then you could just wear a white coat. Marie Curie or Rosalind Franklin maybe. You wouldn't have to look like them in any meaningful way.

chickbean · 01/01/2010 19:42

Fancy dress is often a great ice-breaker - so if you are on the pull it's a way to start a conversation

ElfieDee · 01/01/2010 19:49

why dont u go as a bunny girl?? or is that a bad idea??? say you are waiting for hugh heffner???

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 19:51

see chickbean I thought it could be an ice breaker me not being in fancy dress

ok. by googling I have found an uncanny resemblance to me and Kelly osbourne. (not sure I like that or not) with her dark brown bob, and no fringe. Only downer is I wear glasses.

so how can I cobble an outfit together ala Kelly Osbourne and go as her?? or do I just go kinda rock chick and tell everyone who I am?!!
