to not do fancy dress?

friend is having a birthday party next weekend. Been planned for ages. I have managed to get kids to stay at ex-H and have said I will go (even though slightly dreading it as they are all married up couples and I am the deserted wife)

However its fancy dress. I hate fancy dress with a passion. I managed it for a friends hen night but hated it. Cant even use the same costume as its a different theme.

I've said many times I am not doing fancy dress and been told I have to, and eye rolled at.

At the end of the day, who cares surely? I mean fancy dress is only funny for the first 3 seconds you see someone it in - after that you're just a twat in a costume surely?

so AIBU to turn up to this party next weekend in my normal clothes (not least looking sexy incase some nice single men are there?!)

smokinaces · 01/01/2010 20:02

ImSoNotTelling · 01/01/2010 20:05

I have seen kelly osbourne sporting glasses I'm sure. You would need some bright red lipstick and an insane father to really pull it off though...

I like the mia wallace idea. Wide trousers white shirt toy gun job done

Moresproutsplease · 01/01/2010 20:20

Catherine Z-J in Chicago

or

Liza Minelli in Cabaret

Both v. sexy (costumes a bit draughty though )

ImSoNotTelling · 01/01/2010 21:16

mary quant?

I think you might regret it if you didn;t dress up at all. Last time I went to a fancy dress party there was just one person who came in his ordinary clothes. He was a bit shy and wasn't keen on the whole fancy dress thing and assumed that their would be loads of others who would be the same. There wasn't so that made him really conspicuous.

Sorry but no ideas as yet - unless you could hold your face really stiff and pretend to be Dannii Minogue, she has a brown bob

Numberfour · 02/01/2010 14:36

i HATE HATE HATE fancy dress, too, but I agree with 5foot5 - if you don't dress up you will feel the odd one out.

DaftApeth · 02/01/2010 14:38

Have you got any orange clothes or could you borrow any?

Go as Velma from Scooby-doo

nannynobnobs · 02/01/2010 14:48

My sister went as Mia Wallace recently- I said "Smart Mia or OD Mia?" she didn't fancy covering her hair with sick so opted for a subtle nosebleed.
If you don't like silly dressing up, you could just do what my SIL did which was smart trousers, shirt and tie and a fedora. It's 'fancy' enough but you don't look a twat.

Pikelit · 02/01/2010 14:51

I spend quite a lot of the year in costume. Which is entirely different to fancy dress. My heart also sinks at the idea of a Fancy Dress Party since they are bloody stressful and rarely much fun.

I would seriously support the idea of Velma from Scooby Do though. It's easy and not so far removed from RL that occasional fancy dress wearers will be discomfitted. Charity shops should deliver the goods.
Velma

Go as Dannii Minogue. She is famous and has a black bob. You can then dress up dead glam and look fabulous. Just make sure you go around spoiking een an awstraylian eeksent tho! You'll have a fab time!

pippaNnippa · 02/01/2010 16:21

go as willy wonka (jonny depp)
