And more to the point, queueing through the night to wait for the shops to open.

Next/Debenhams/many other sales start tomorrow

I just can't believe that anything is that great that people are prepared to go to such lengths..

Why do people want to go shopping on Boxing Day? havent they had enough? Dont get me wrong I love shopping and I love a bargain but the very thought of it the day after Christmas Day just does not appeal! I think Boxing Day has gone from being a family day to being just a normal one. For kids now I think Christmas lasts just one day that is such a shame

Someone needs to start a campaign to stop the shops from opening on boxing day, there's really no need for them to start the sales on this day, it's consumerism gone mad. The shop staff deserve to have this day off, postponing the sales for one extra day will not cause any harm. It's pure greed!

shopping is probably the nation's top past-time. Armageddon is nigh.

gingernutlover · 26/12/2009 20:56

in the majority of cases, staff are neither paid more to work over christmas nor given the choice.

I worked in retail for about 6 years and was made to work every xmas eve til late and in early on boxing day, no extra pay, no time off in leu and was told if I didnt then I would be sacked. The year I got flu over xmas my manager didnt beleive me and sacked me!

Retail staff are treated like crap by the management in a lot of shops and I really don't get how it would hurt to start the sales on the 27th.

I am sooooooooo glad I now dont work in retail but feel really sorry for the people who do (many of whom have no choice but to do that job to support their family)

I went to the Next sale and Mothercare.

It was my first Boxing Day without my kids (they spent Christmas Day with me, Boxing Day with their dad) and I had saved a couple of weeks maintenance money to buy DS1 a new wardrobe as he's moving sizes. I really enjoyed it - by the time I got to Next mid morning there were no queues, no fights, and I got 2 bags full with no problems.

Only downer was a dress I bought myself for work has a busted zip so got to take it back.

I admit I dont like the idea of shops being open. But my cousin loves it - Uni student getting £12 an hour to work there. And also it made today (along with a cinema trip) a lot less lonely without the kids

I still would never get up at 7am though!!

I worked today, we had to open because we're in a shopping centre with a Next (stores in a town stayed shut). It was crap, the customers were miserable, rude and vulture like.It isn't my fault I and all my staff want to be at home with our families...who in their right mind brings their children in to be fitted for school shoes on Boxing Day morning???????? (I wish I was joking).I accept we don't all celebrate Christmas, but, come on, give us a break!! I hated every minute of it, got no extra pay or time in lieu and feel disillusioned with society as a whole. A really , really SAD day.

worleywinterwonderland · 26/12/2009 21:13

bit off subject, but do people get paid extra for working weekends/bankholidays any more?

im working bhmonday, having to do extra hours and not on extra money. (nhs worker though) might have to think baout changing jobs if people get paid extra for weekends..

i did go to the next sale this morning, got ds1 and ds2 lots of new jeans to last them another year

laloue · 26/12/2009 21:29

no extra for Saturdays, Sundays can be anything from nowt to x3. Bank Hol's the same...unless you're salaried in which case you work for the love of it and a day off in a years time , or in exchange for a sick day where you'd loose pay. Joy to the world.

I won't shop on Boxing Day.I used to work in retail and remember when late night and Sunday shopping started.I used to work 9-8, 9-9, 9-8 on Tues,Weds,Thurs and it was a killer, not to mention working late on Christmas Eve,marking stuff down for the sale.I stopped working in shops about 20 years ago and don't regret it one bit,it's hard work and unappreciated by most customers.
