to wonder who in their right mind wants to be shopping in the sales at 7:00 tomorrow morning?

And more to the point, queueing through the night to wait for the shops to open.

Next/Debenhams/many other sales start tomorrow

I just can't believe that anything is that great that people are prepared to go to such lengths..

YANBU. Where's the need to start the sales on Boxing day? Let the poor staff have a few days off with their family. Bah humbug, this is what this is. The modern day scrooge. I refuse to set foot in a shop for this reason. It's rediculous that they open so early, where's the problem with them all staying closed for a couple of days? The government need to step in and protect the rights of the staff to spend time with their families.

FluffyForLifeNotJustForXmas · 26/12/2009 00:22

My friend manages a shop, he was asked if he was open on christmas day, the customer actually complained when he said no

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/12/2009 09:26

I'm desperate to spend my vouchers but definitely won't be going anywhere near any shops today as it'll be horrific. Currently the Next website says it'll connect me to the sale site in 8 mins Unfortunately got a load of Next vouchers to spend but would rather pay full price than the Boxing Day sale!

purplepeony · 26/12/2009 09:36

YABU
up to everyone to do what they want to do.
Sales are not just about clothes- they also sell large household items like white goods etc etc.

A lot of the time it is not about shopping though- it is about getting out of the house and away from the family!

A lot ofpeople take extra hols over the Xmas break and offices/businesses close , so being cooped up en famille is more than some people can stand- my DH is off work for 2 weeks _ but I won't be going shopping today.

Sarahlou8 · 26/12/2009 11:55

I have just come back from the Next sale

I absolutely love it!! I am near an out of town big store, yes - its busy, yes - you have to queue to pay but the atmosphere is fab, the staff were handing out sweets in the queue and I look forward to it, without fail, every year
To all the people who love the sale who have been rifling rails with me, where are you??!!
I can't be the only one!

PS the online sale is only good if you manage to get a VIP slot. When the sale starts officially, its ALL GONE!!

nothingofthesort · 26/12/2009 12:49

YANBU. I have bought in their online sales (Next) and it seems to be all the crap that no one wants to buy at full price that is put on sale. The sale items can be previewed before the sale starts so it's not even that all the "good" sale items have sold out.

nothingofthesort · 26/12/2009 12:51

What atmosphere? You mean being in an overcrowded shop with sweaty people fighting over clothes?

Fibilou · 26/12/2009 12:58

we drove past Next this morning en route from MILs to DH's work (at 06.30). There was a massive queue - why ????
I don't understand why you would get up at that time on a bank holiday to buy tat that nobody wanted the rest of the year. Are people that addicted to shopping ?

wannaBe · 26/12/2009 13:01

"A lot of the time it is not about shopping though- it is about getting out of the house and away from the family!" And this is imo what is wrong. If you want to get out and away from the family then why not go for a walk?

Agree with the posters who think it's not fair on the employees to have to be in work at ridiculous hours on Boxing Day. Refuse to shop on Boxing Day or create demand for this sort of thing. Let the Christmas holidays be more than one day!

merrycompo · 26/12/2009 13:23

They might want to work
they might get paid more

malovitt · 26/12/2009 13:34

Just got back from Oxford St - got some good bargains in Boots with all their gift stuff half price, then HMV for some CDs.
Started to get a bit manic then so I came home.
John Lewis is shut today, which was my main reason going really.

MrsMorgan · 26/12/2009 13:40

I would go if I had money to spend. It always amazes me how people can aford to go shoppping on boxing day, unless they were given money for xmas.

Twinkleandpearls · 26/12/2009 14:02

Strikes me a a rather horrific day to start boxing day.

At 7am this morning I was making wild passionate love in my non sale lingerie.

merrycompo · 26/12/2009 14:04

Yes definitely think peome spend Xmas money especially teenagers

wannaBe · 26/12/2009 14:12

want to work? more likely that they have no choice as boxing day is probably a part of their contracted hours..

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 26/12/2009 14:17

Next clothes are crap even at half price.

Bathsheba · 26/12/2009 14:44

I was listening to them talking to people queueing for sales on the radio this morning - there was one woman talking about a specific handbag that she wanted.

Now, handbags are not my thing but I envisaged a decent saving on a decent handbag might be worth queueing for on boxing day morning, however as the interview went on it became clear that she was queueing outside Next....I do like Next clothes, I and my DDs wear next Clothes - I'd have been pretty darn naked for teh alst 8 months without Next maternity Jeans, but queueing for hours for a Next HANDBAG....I don;t think so...

purplepeony · 26/12/2009 14:48

I don't think you should generalise about the staff who have to work on BD- they might have the option and they might want to.
All this enforced holiday over the Christmas period does not appeal to everyone. Many will be p/t uni and school students who are glad to be paid double time for unsocial hours.

I really don't think this topic is worthy of AIBU- it's a case of some folks do and some folks don't..like sales. No right or wrong is there?

I don't, but if anyone else wants to that's fine by me.

mustrunmore · 26/12/2009 14:52

If I was offered work today, I'd take it. As it happens, its dh's rostered working day so he's working, but only for time and a half, which he's not too happy with. But New Years day is double. I could see him steaming at the ears though, when a friends dh said he's getting triple for today, and neither did he have to get up at 5.30!

I'm happy with my Boots online half price purchases, but I am going to pop out to Boots tomo without the kids, and John Lewis. Thats it.

islandofsodor · 26/12/2009 15:28

I can't understand it myself.

Apparently though my sil says Next employees have a good deal as they are paid extra for working boxing day, she works next door in Argos and will be on minimm wage as it is quote " a normal working day for her"

Saying that I did 8 years ago go to the sales on Boxing Day very early on. Sil had unexpectedly given birth 3 weeks early before she had even finished work officially and had very little in the way of clothes etc ready for the new baby.

mustrunmore · 26/12/2009 16:37

It is a normal working day, because the official bank hol is Monday, what with xmas being on inconvenient days this year! Dh had to really fight to get his time and a half; I'm suprised they caved in actually. He should just be on single cos its his rostered day, but he really argued the point that it was the 'true' bank hol today, and if he has to work on weekends, he shouldnt have to stick to the rules of people that work a 5 day week

sweetkitty · 26/12/2009 16:46

I have been in the past but couldn't face it this year, it's just horrific people bump you out the way to get 3 of the same thing that they will probably take back anyway.
