to feel as wobbly as hell having just fallen over on the ice with DS in his sling?

Obviously this isn't really a very pertinent AIBU, but I know this part of the site is busy and I wanted to warn others about how treacherous it is out there.

I'm in Exeter, where the temperature has risen since yesterday and it's raining quite hard, so I blithely thought the ground would be fine. Crikey! I had DS (9 weeks old and pfb) in the sling and my feet went out from under me. I landed flat on my back so DS landed on top of me and seems none the worse for the experience. We have taken to our bed where DS is enjoying an unscheduled feed to steady both our nerves.

I'm not going out there again today!

Take care everyone!

Ouch. Glad you are both ok

Mishy1234 · 23/12/2009 13:04

You poor thing, you must have had an awful fright.

Bet your DS didn't even notice and glad you're both OK.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 23/12/2009 13:06

Really glad you are both OK, not surprised you're feeling wobbly.

I had to take DS to the doctors and I was really shocked at how awful it was. DH had told me that it was was just wet and hadn't realized that the "wet" was black ice, I've never seen it as bad.

belcantwait · 23/12/2009 13:14

ooh poor you what a nasty shock. i am in exeter too and have already taken in one elderly lady who fell flat on her back and badly injured her head . cleaned her up, fed her sweet tea and took her home again. think her son was going home to her and was taking her to a and e

InMyLittleHead · 23/12/2009 13:16

Poor you! It is still really dangerous, I know. Glad you're both alright - a friend fell with his baby son in February and broke his wrist trying to protect the baby.

SparklyGothKat · 23/12/2009 13:17

I slipped on the ice the other day while carrying Ds2, 26 months. I landed on my back and managed to shift DS2 onto my front so he wasn't hurt but it shook me up

JaneyTroll · 23/12/2009 13:19

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. Yep - DS wailed for about 4 seconds at the shock of it, then fell asleep as I staggered back to the house!

I can't believe how slippery it is, I couldn't even get my feet under me to stand up. I had to crawl off the path onto the grass.

I rang DH who says he has also fallen over this morning while on his way to Tesco for the Christmas food shop. He was crossing the road, which was gritted, but slipped over on the pedestrian island, which wasn't. Clearly there's a lot of it about.

I read the title to this thread and thought "what on earth were you doing ice-skating with a baby in a sling, you loon".

That's sleep deprivation for you.

As you were.

NightShoe · 23/12/2009 13:41

Poor you, we are in Exeter too and it is absolutely trecherous out there, you can't see the ice at all, it does just look wet.

I slipped this morning too, fortunately no baby attached, but I did manage to pull DH down with me. What a pair of loons we must have looked

NightShoe · 23/12/2009 13:42

Also a little note to the lady in purple 4 inch spike heels tottering around. Buy. Some. Boots. Twit.

ReindeerInaSkoda · 23/12/2009 14:16

@ Verity!

I remember really not knowing whether to use the pram or the sling when ds was a teeny baby, many moons ago. I had visions of me going arse over tit and tipping the pram over and him being catapaulted out (tho I suppose the reins would have held him). Or squashing him in a sling.

macdoodle · 23/12/2009 14:45

Gosh glad you are ok!
I know a very sad story of a lady who went to the beach with her baby in a sling, slipped on the rocks unfortunately fell fiward and the baby hit its head on bthe rocks, suffered a traumatic fractured skull and sadly later died
Be careful!

5Foot5 · 23/12/2009 18:09

ReindeerInaSkoda: I wonder if your fears about tipping over the pram could account for something we saw today which on the face of it looked really silly.

Where we are the pavements are still covered in compacted snow and presumably slippy. We were going out in the car and we saw a woman with a double buggy who was walking along the road rather than the pavement. It is quite a busy road and cars were having to crawl along behind her until they could safely pass.

DH said "Look at that stupid woman in the road. If there is an accident she would be responsible for manslaughter". I felt there must be more to it as I couldn't believe someone would do something so apparently dangerous if she didn't have a good reason - maybe the buggy being impossible to push on the ice or something. Having said that we saw someone pushing another buggy on the pavement just a bit further along and they seemed to be having no trouble.

So couldn't make my mind up whether she was being stupid or had a good reason. having read your post maybe I can understand it a bit.

JaneyTroll · 23/12/2009 18:21

Just speaking with DH on the phone as he was walking from work to the station to get home, and he fell over again! There was some muffled flailing then some swearing. He's ok though, poor boy! Go careful, it's getting bad again now it's dark.

i've now got concussion having slipped on the ice today, and the baby was tucked up safely at home and I've still got the wobbles so YANBU. I canlt imagine how i would be feeling if i'd been wearing a sling.

I ended up walking home in the road most of the way home as the pavements were like ice rinks

ReindeerInaSkoda · 23/12/2009 18:34

5foot5 - sounds like she might have been, if it's anything like it is where I live (the grit the roads, rarely the pavements

gothgirl77 · 24/12/2009 12:23

I sympathise Janey - it's really bad here too, no grit on any pavements or on most of the roads. I managed to slip hard on the pavement yesterday (while wearing snow boots, cold weather gear and the like rather than stupid shoes). Managed to land on my back instead of the bump but am still petrified about effect on proto-goth, so I know I'd be a wreck if I'd been wearing a sling. Glad you and DS are OK.

Now to explain to DH and SIL why their presents might be a little late this year...

jaggythistle · 24/12/2009 13:58

Nope, I almost slipped as soon as I left my house last week with 12 week old son in sling and was still feeling wobbly all the way to the shop and back. I was a bit daft though, too busy looking at his wee smiley face, instead of where I was going.

It seemed a better idea than shoving the pramt hrough the snow, but I'm a bit nervous now.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 24/12/2009 16:09

Glad everyone that has fallen is fine.

Where we are lots of compacted snow and horrible slush had to pop out to shop today and couldn't get the buggy over the pavements had no choice other than to go in the (thankfully quiet) road.
Poor ds (3) couldn't walk on it so had to go in the buggy.

You poor thing, l'm just outside Exeter and fell carrying DD3, 7 mo and had DD1 in back carrier. Terrifying.

figrollinthehay · 24/12/2009 20:16

A neighbour's DIL fell in the ice and has broken her pelvis at 33 weeks pregnant - poor woman.

A friend is 38 weeks pregnant and scared to leave the house.

Not surprised you are wobbly.

giraffespullthesleigh · 24/12/2009 20:18

I remember last year the bugaboo going sideways like a cleaning machine.

Last year my Dad slipped on ice running for train, was knocked unconcious, bit tongue right open - like hanging off, and broke arm in 3 places. Still has physio now.

Hes just been on phone to tell me to wear boots tomorrow not "dolly shoes" as my wee sis turned up wearing tonight.

MilkNoBrandyForSanta · 25/12/2009 00:26

Went flying down the path, accross the pavement and into a parked car yesterday...carrying a bag of present (3/5 glass...broke em all!) and got glass in my hand...knee is purple hand is cut ego is HUGELY bruised!

Feel like a prize prat as i was wearing flimsy plimps...it didnt LOOK icey!!

Glad everyone who fell over is ok and their DC's are ok...Fig-your poor neighbours DIL!

madamearcati · 25/12/2009 21:59

Sorry but i think you are bonkers to take a baby out in a sling when it is slippery !
