nope, you are sensible and cautious

Maleeka · 20/12/2009 23:53

Very sensible, my oh was about to go to sainsburys earlier today so reversed my car outta its space and all i heard was revving as the cars wheels spun on the ice and wouldnt budge!

He had to leave it there, get his car and get some grip from gap in the ice that my car had left and use his instead!

3monkeys · 21/12/2009 00:11

Glad it's not just me! I am getting anxious about driving to work tomorrow evening - its' 30 miles but mostly motorway. Feel so pathetic to be scared!

Tortington · 21/12/2009 00:17

i did a big trip today to see family, and the A roads were pretty good.

but i was very worried about our street.

i am a very confident driver and i am worried.

alypaly · 21/12/2009 00:23

so annoyed at Ds2 ,he told me his job experience started at a vets today, so drove 15 miles . In this weather to find out he had got his days wrong. Should be tomorrow. It was -4 when we set off this morning and treacherous, i could will kill him later

spookycharlotte121 · 21/12/2009 00:25

Im just debating how and if we will go to nursery tomorrow. dont know if its better to go on foot or by caar or not at all. might get exp to take ds. he is a much more conifdent driver than me.

JaneS · 21/12/2009 01:05

Of course not, you're sensible. But you could always put some salt down?

upahill · 21/12/2009 08:33

I hate it to. I was able to walk to work on Friday but it meant leaving all the equipment I needed to return to work after doing sessions on Wednesday and Thursday night in the car. It's still there now I'm just hoping no one else wants to use it just yet!!.

I am so glad that my trip out has been cancelled today because I don't feel like driving a minibus full of kids across the country!! I am hoping tomrrows trip is cancelled and the one on Wednesday to the Peak District is cancelled as well. I'd be a jibbering wreck by home time!

We did a 2 hour round trip round Sheffield yesterday, never got to where we were going (normally 15 minute drive) and had a slight bump in the car (not our fault, stupid person driving too fast through a red light).

I was supposed to meeting a friend and her DS today to swap presents, etc. but there is no chance. Too much snow here and according to DH - who went to work earlier - the roads are not good. No gritters been out again Going to have to phone up in a bit and see if we can rearrange but I have no idea for when as we are busy most of the holiday period now til the New Year.

I also need to go to the hospital for an xray and some blood tests, but it won't be today now. Not risking accidents in my car. Hopefully it will start to go today.

Whether I can walk to the Post Office or not is another thing but not convinced.

WinkyWinkola · 21/12/2009 08:47

Nope, you have absolutely no control over a standard car on ice. It's very frightening when they start to slide towards pavements where other cars are parked or people are walking!

It happened to us yesterday when out walking - obviously the kerb stopped the car but the slow motion horror was pretty upsetting.

Polgara2 · 21/12/2009 08:51

YA most definitely NBU! Am supposed to be food shopping today but combination of feeling ill and the ice rink outside the house is putting me off considerably!

nannynick · 21/12/2009 09:07

Having driven for 17 years I have some experience of driving in snow and ice, though not much, given I'm in the South of England so don't always get that much snow. Replaced my ageing car in August, so not got used to how the replacement car drives in snow yet. I'm not planning on driving anywhere unless I really have to.

YANBU don't go out in the car unless really necessary.

bellavita · 21/12/2009 09:11

YANBU!

We live in a village, have had snowfall for the last three days. I am not moving my car off the drive at all. The boys are most upset as I had promised to take them to see Alvin and the Chipmunks.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 21/12/2009 09:18

YANBU

It's not so bad here, just a dusting but as the escort took ds3 off tos chool she mentioned she might be back soona s the road out of the village is dangerous-I wish dh had grabbed ds3 back, the side of that road is a river and the other a sheer drop; plus if it'sworse than werealised out there we possibly face having to trek 10km to fetch ds3 should the weather worsen.

Our car is the sort yopu'd want in this weather (not 4 wheldrive but solid Mitsubushi) becuase Dh worked nights and faced a commute,it always snowed when he was already there and had to come back so we needed a car with 'snowability'IYSWIM; however dh is taking the older two to the cinema later and I am not taking the Smart car out to fetch ds3, oh no. Praying the taxi lady makes it back.

CybilinExcelsisDaewoo · 21/12/2009 09:19

I have a pathological fear of falling on ice so have considered scattering salt before me as I walk, like confetti.

StayingSantasGirl · 21/12/2009 09:21

We've got snow falling now, but over night it rained and the rain froze as it hit the ground, so everywhere is sheet ice round here. Dh had to drive the older two dses round their paper rounds as it wouldn't have been safe for them to cycle, and he was parking right up on the pavements to get them as close to the houses as possible.

He's told me only to go out in an emergency, as he's afraid I'd fall and break something (though I am pretty well padded - lol).
So no, you are definitely not being unreasonable.

SleighBelleDameSansMerci · 21/12/2009 09:25

YANBU - apart from anything else, if you don't feel confident you'll be nervous and that's when mistakes can happen. I'm a really arrogant confident driver and I'm not going anywhere until the grit is down or the ice is gone. Snow is one thing but ice? No thank you. You can't control a car on ice. Stay home!

Nowtheres4 · 21/12/2009 09:29

ok i shouldn;t have read this before i have to go to work down country lanes whihc are bound not to be gritted. am actually really scared and worried.

Poledra · 21/12/2009 09:30

Stay At Home!

I drove home through the snow on Thursday night, am a confident driver with a big heavy car but still got stuck going up a hill - took me 15 minutes to manage to get the bugger moving again.

If you don't need to go out, don't!

Hulababy · 21/12/2009 09:30

Am taking heart from the BBC weather and weather.com who are telling me there will be no more snow here til after Christmas, possible sleet on the 27th. It will be cold so the snow will be slow to go - but at least no more.

Which means not all my plans for coming up to Christmas will be spoilt.

MrsMorgan · 21/12/2009 09:30

YANBU

I am absolutly terrified of driving on it, and we don;t even have that much. I only passed in July, and have already had one bump.

I live in a culdesac and the piece of road directly in front of my drive is thick ice. Everyone kees teling me to just do it and I will be fine, but I don't want to.

I do need to go out tomorrow though so I am praying it has gone by then.

LIZS · 21/12/2009 09:50

Side roads are treacherous around here, some closed and none gritted or ploughed. A roads fine with a bit more care than usual. Getting off our drive is a challenge in itself though, there is a dip where the pavement starts which is full of ice so if you pause there you get wheel spin. Have done it for dh's car so he has gone into work but mine can stay put today !

Hulababy · 21/12/2009 17:13

I did venture out.

I walked to the local shops first, with DD. Roads on our estate were bad. Other side roads nearby were very slushy, and the main roads clear.

So we went to meet a friend for lunch and to swap presents. Once out of the estate it was easy going, no problems. However our estate roads were not nice and I did slide slightly going round the mini roundabout - eek.

But home cosy and warm now.

jeep · 21/12/2009 17:16

i don't get why they can't grit side roads - ours is awful but all the main roads are clear
