To think that people who don't clear the snow off their cars before driving are ignorant and lazy?

Quite apart from the fact that you can't see their headlights or indicators, when you follow them great lumps of snow blow off their vehicle and land on your windscreen so you can't see either.

TWATS!!

I clear enough so that the windows are all clear and I have full visibility in order to drive safely but I never get rid of the stuff on the roof myself.
Find that falls off naturally as screech round the corner, skidding on nearby sheets of ice from car washers

2rebecca · 20/12/2009 23:37

Never had this problem and I live in Scotland, sounds like you tailgate.

cornysxmasmuffmusic · 20/12/2009 23:38

Yes OP tailgating is dangerous. People like you are a menace on the roads.

NotanOtter · 20/12/2009 23:39

omg

i am a bit at this thread

big deal - get a life

katnkittens · 20/12/2009 23:42

Am agreeing with notanotter

I am guilty of this mortal sin

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 20/12/2009 23:48

OP - are you sure you're not actually skitching?

Can't see how else lumps of snow would affect your visibility as they tend to slide off the back of a car in a downward motion?

Have to agree with OP here, you need a broom! please clear the roof of your car/van before traveling. A roof of snow onto your car is not fun/causes accidents....van drivers in particular take note! I know the UK is not used to 'snow' but please clear your vehicles before use.

edam · 21/12/2009 00:40

Yeah, but it's really funny when you see someone who hasn't cleared the roof of their car having to brake suddenly. The whole lot shoots down, covering the windscreen and making them look like a bit of a twonk. As well as unable to move until the wipers have been running for quite a while.

(Note: I don't hang around street corners leaping out at people who haven't cleared the snow off their rooves or anything, have just happened to notice this a few times.)

Tortington · 21/12/2009 00:41

i bet you do

edam · 21/12/2009 00:43

(darn, outed myself there. Still, at least it's not trainspotting or anything... )

Tortington · 21/12/2009 00:43

i did long journey today and say lots of cars with snow on - i kept my distance - which is only sensible

i have a low car so i cleared my roof, as if anyone was up my arse and it should fly off, it would probably go straight on their windscreen, so i cleared it off

edam · 21/12/2009 00:48

tbh, it would probably never have occurred to me that clearing the snow off the roof is a bright idea if I hadn't seen other people demonstrating the full comedy value first.

Although as a child it was somehow my job to hop out of my bedroom window onto the roof of the bay window underneath to clear the snow off - my mother claimed she was worried it might come down through the ceiling. I wasn't entirely convinced by her line of argument - suspected it was just more proof that my younger sister was the favourite and I was dispensible!

BeckyBook · 21/12/2009 01:00

Lazy I can understand but ignorant? Ignorant of what?
Ignorant of the fact there is snow on the roof I guess.

MiddleAgedNamechanger · 21/12/2009 15:19

Hi guys - have you non-roof-cleaners failed to work out that the snow flies off and lands on cars going the OTHER WAY...

derrrr...

OP posts:
lovechoc · 21/12/2009 15:28

I just clear the windscreen and windows and that's it really!

YABU who on earth has time to clear the snow off their roof?! I just get in and drive.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 21/12/2009 15:31

OP - are you sure? that would mean it blew off in the opposite direction to the direction the car it was on was going, which seems unlikely......especially as it would also have to go sideways to then affect cars coming along the other side of the road.......

MiddleAgedNamechanger · 21/12/2009 15:32

BeckyBook I would say ignorant of the fact that they are causing a potential danger to themselves and others

OP posts:
MiddleAgedNamechanger · 21/12/2009 15:54

Oh... and the name changing wasn't for the benefit of this thread - it was because I confessed to starting an affair and am to darned LAZY to have got around to changing back to my usual name!

So there you are... I'm far from perfect myself.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 21/12/2009 16:01

YABU
it didn't accur to me to clean the snow off anything other than my windscreen and rear window. Perhaps that makes me ignorant but I don't anticipate every little inconvenience I might cause anyone, because I'm not superwoman.
And it's bloody cold enough wiping snow off your windscreen, without thinking about rooves and headlights. [mutters]

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2009 16:06

I agree with the OP. It's utterly stupid and ignorant, not to mention dangerous, not to clean your car of snow.

IIRC, in certain countries (eg Germany) it is illegal not to clear your car. I always do it.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2009 16:07

I get utterly pissed off driving behind cars which are throwing huge lumps of snow at my windscreen.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2009 16:08

Oh, and no, I don't tailgate.

Hulababy · 21/12/2009 16:21

I always clear as much as possible. I open the door and stand on the car door ledge to reach the roof.

To not clear the roof is really dangerous. The snow either falls forward and can end up on your windscreen meaning you can't see, or it goes back and can end up in the view f a following car. They do not have to be close behind for this to be a danger.

You should also def clear snow from your lights and windows - so cars can see you and you can have as much visibility as possible.

IMO to not clear your car is dangerous. You must make time to do it, and you must find a way of reaching the top of your car. Otherwise you are a liability on our roads.

Hulababy · 21/12/2009 16:23

And not having the time is just not a good enough excuse IMO. Make the time. Go outside 3 minutes earlier and do it before you leave.

Please don't be the cause of an accident because you couldn't be bothered or didn't think.
