Was looking for a couple of xmas cards today.

Found one that said 'Happy Christmas from Kingswood'(area on border of bristol & south glos). It had a beautiful snowy picture of the Clifton Suspension Bridge on it.

The Suspension Bridge is nowhere near Kingswood (several miles away).

I'll admit Kingswood isn't the most picturesque area but surely they could have found somewhere local? Historically it was never even in Bristol.

Have bought one for Dp's grandad who is in hospital adn likely to be so over christmas to give him a laugh.

Me and dp sniggered at the card alot. Am now amusing myself by thinking up things they could have photographed instead - boarded up churches, charity shops, chasers nightclub (now boarded up) etc etc. Or to be more serious the park, the big church, grimsbury farm.

But am a bit annoyed at the same time, though not going to lose sleep over it. BUt sometimes you'd think clifton was the only place that existed in Bristol outside the centre as it's the only other place photographed to represent the city. And I for one think of it as a protected enclave rather than part of the main. It is nothing like most of the city that I know. And it is a small part of a very large city.

There is also other stuff going on like old pretty streetlights being removed from 'less nice' areas and resited in Clifton. Them having better (and cheaper) bus service than the rest of us and similar things. Just to prove to the rest of us that we are not worthy of them. And now they are even hijacking our christmas cards.

Bastards.

I like those postcards [hgrin]. They are stunningly boring.

I once walked from the centre to Staple Hill (nearby) that took a couple of hours.

Suspension bridge to Kingswood I reckons you could walk it in 3 hours. Prob take longer on buses!

It's [hshock] outside the M25 - just beyond the 'here be dragons' sign.

Kingswood has got a particularly lovely branch of Greggs.

I vote for that to be on the postcard instead of the suspension bridge.
And you are right. Putting that on it is like putting a picture of Buckingham Palace and saying 'Welcome to Tooting'!

Makes I laff.

Rindercella · 19/12/2009 13:36

Sorry, I am just PMSL @ Armadillo's attempts at festive smileys

golgi · 19/12/2009 13:36

Clifton - where's that to?

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 13:42

I forgotten about greggs - that would make a lovely image. They have decorations up AND festive treats in the window.

A quick google brought up this image, which I'm sure would make a stunning Christmas card.....

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 14:04

I'm sure it would - one of the many garages we have round here

That has inspired me to do a google image search. May make my own christmas cards for family

classy

have no idea

Some of the old images are really nice though.

This church is rather pretty.

Actually, I am totally fascinated by the website that picture came from, which has a 'Mystery Worshipper' page. The Mystery Worshipper apparently spends Sundays going to different churches & reporting on their services.

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 14:14

The chip shop is fab. Award winning.

My mate lives on Whiteladies Road. They can't recycle due to not being able to leave out glass bottles adn stuff as it gets smashed and spread about and often has to step over puddles of vomit to get out the building in the mornings. The council gave them extra black bins and told them they were not to leave out recycling (block of flats).

Plus all the local shops cost a fortune and you can't get cheap stuff for love nor money. And she pays a huge amount of rent for her bedsit flat. Her previous one (in the same building was full of mould, shared bathroom, no cooker etc and she paid double what you would do down here.

mystery worshipper thing is weird.

Like resturant reviews but for church services?

That library is weird looking. Is it library on bottom and housing on top?

Has to be better than the last one though? Does the new one have disabled access?

Here is the Mystery Worshippers report for the Kingswood Moravian & United Reformed Church.

Apparently Kingswood used to be a mining area & had lots of tiny miners' chapels, but most of them have now disappeared, presumably replaced by garages and branches of Greggs....

Tis true.

It was wild down this way. Bristolians were told to avoid the barbarian savages and steer clear (not joking). They were seen as wild. They used to send in missionaries. All out this way was. There are a couple of boarded up small churches still along the high street.

Also were (later on) a lot of factories around here - pins and later bootmaking mostly. Grandparents generations still remember it and many worked in the factories.

Has an interesting history.

thinking of new christmas card - 'greggs of bristol'. Images of the ones in Kingswood, Staple Hill, Fishponds, Bedminster etc. That'll contrast nicely with christmas in clifton with a snowy covered suspension bridge
