Was looking for a couple of xmas cards today.

Found one that said 'Happy Christmas from Kingswood'(area on border of bristol & south glos). It had a beautiful snowy picture of the Clifton Suspension Bridge on it.

The Suspension Bridge is nowhere near Kingswood (several miles away).

I'll admit Kingswood isn't the most picturesque area but surely they could have found somewhere local? Historically it was never even in Bristol.

Have bought one for Dp's grandad who is in hospital adn likely to be so over christmas to give him a laugh.

Me and dp sniggered at the card alot. Am now amusing myself by thinking up things they could have photographed instead - boarded up churches, charity shops, chasers nightclub (now boarded up) etc etc. Or to be more serious the park, the big church, grimsbury farm.

But am a bit annoyed at the same time, though not going to lose sleep over it. BUt sometimes you'd think clifton was the only place that existed in Bristol outside the centre as it's the only other place photographed to represent the city. And I for one think of it as a protected enclave rather than part of the main. It is nothing like most of the city that I know. And it is a small part of a very large city.

There is also other stuff going on like old pretty streetlights being removed from 'less nice' areas and resited in Clifton. Them having better (and cheaper) bus service than the rest of us and similar things. Just to prove to the rest of us that we are not worthy of them. And now they are even hijacking our christmas cards.

Bastards.

I sympathise

we have a black and white version of this pic up on the stairs as part of a Places We Have Lived triptych. That particular one is entitled 'And we got out alive...'

santasmagicnappysack · 19/12/2009 14:41

I'll put my order in now for next year

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 14:48

I like where I live - it may not be classy but the school ds goes to is lovely (though large), the doctors surgery may not look nice but is much nicer (the receptionists in particular are very friendly and helpful).

lol at 'we got out alive' though

It is interesting Armadillo - I've just been reading all about George Whitefield and his open-air evangelism in Kingswood.
This is my 'what have you learned on MN today' item.

MrsBadger · 19/12/2009 14:55

oh at the time we loved it - we were young hip childless 20-somethings, it was happening, urban, diverse, central and very cheap

and only one person got stabbed in our doorway...

BouncingTurtle · 19/12/2009 15:01

Mystery Worshipper - they basically go to different chruches and do a review of the service!
Xmas day 2007, the mystery worshipper attended the service at St Nic's in Durham, and there was a special mention of, whilst administering holy communion, the vicar did a special prayer of a pregnant woman who was 2 days past her due date...that pregnant woman was me
The review was lovely, talking about how the congregation was very welcoming - at least 2 people came up to the MW as a stranger to the church, to welcome her and introduce her to people, and that the service itself was excellent (I think DH did a reading!).

NoahAndTheWhale · 19/12/2009 15:02

I have this book somewhere.

I do like it

NoahAndTheWhale · 19/12/2009 15:03

Bother, the search inside function isn't working at the moment. You need it to so you can fully appreciate it

bluebump · 19/12/2009 15:08

My sister lives in St George in Bristol and was going on about how they would be living a few streets closer to the park than where they were before and how lovely it was. Cue them moving in and the park being cordened off because someone had been murdered there! Still it looks nice here

This website is really funny, written by the locals where you live. Well the one for my town certainly is!

RustyBear · 19/12/2009 15:08

We do have a local shop which sells wonderful postcards of the more uplifting parts of Reading - they do calendars and wrapping paper too...

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 15:18

I was dispointed about the search inside function not working - how sad is that?

TBF bluebump most of the parks in bristol I can think of have had someone murdered in them at some point.

Rustybear - they should do some like that of Bristol - I'd buy them!

Try my link from earlier- much of the postcards are duplicated in there

tethersjinglebellend · 19/12/2009 17:24

Ahem- many of the postcards.

tethersjinglebellend · 19/12/2009 17:32

Ignore me, I appear to be lying. It doesn't. The book is great, though.

NoahAndTheWhale · 19/12/2009 18:23

A boring postcard blog

NoahAndTheWhale · 19/12/2009 18:25

And a flickr group

RainRainGoAway · 19/12/2009 19:55

That is the best idea TheArmadillo.

A festive card celebrating all that is Greggs in Bristol at Christmas time. Lush.

And you can shove your Royal York Crescent up your pretty fairy lit arse as well Clifton. We have the Southmead Road over here with the Bear and Ragged Staff.
Please peruse the following reviews for your delectation [fholyshit]

TheArmadillo · 19/12/2009 21:09

at the reviews - they seemed so surprised. Surely everyone knows the bear adn rugged staff?

That would get a place on a postcard of mine I could do a series of them.
