would be a childrens birthday cake?

DH went to get a cake for DS's birthday today. His instructions were - check the dates, and 'get something like a caterpillar or a hedgehog one'. He was getting it from M&S.

He has come home with a huge 'extra chocolately cake'. It looks delicious. But it is not a childrens cake. DS turns one today.

And it is display until today, use by tomorrow on the dates.

I am really disappointed.

He only bought one instead of me because I needed a break, the children are ill at the moment so I have been getting 4 hrs sleep, if that, every night.

YABU. A 1 yr old doesn't care what the cake is.

AvrilH · 17/12/2009 08:21

YABU - it seems obvious to me that you would buy a tasty looking cake - a 12 month old won't expect one marketed to chidren.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/12/2009 08:23

Throw some smarties on top of it and voila, a childrens birthday cake. YABU a one year old won't know.

MmeLindt · 17/12/2009 08:26

Maybe he thought to spoil you, since you did all the work a year ago.

Happy birthday to your DS and get well soon to everyone.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 17/12/2009 08:26

Gah. Well maybe he was BU for not following simple instructions??

You're right, DS won't care, he will just be LOOK, CAKE!!!

OP posts:
mistletoeandjuan · 17/12/2009 08:27

Is the 1 year old actually going to be eating the cake?

diddl · 17/12/2009 08:28

Sorry but YABU.

Maybe I´m selfish, but for first b/days, didn´t occur to spend a stupid amount on a "child type" cake, but to get something that the adults would like.

Obviously that could have choc buttons put on to make it look more like a childs cake.

LoveBeingAMummyKissingSanta · 17/12/2009 08:32

YABU my DD's cakes (yes cakes, we ahd two parties and I don't care )were both non-childrens cakes but I iced on top of them.

If you're not happy with it you can send the cake onto me, it won't have a chance to go off

moaningminniewhingesagain · 17/12/2009 08:32

misletoe - yes he will be eating it. DD's first taste of chocolate cake was her first birthday cake, but DS is BLW and has a 2.8yo sister so he has tried it before I am afraid

moaningminniewhingesagain · 17/12/2009 08:37

I think I am possibly a bit more PFBish about my second than my first

Not having a party, just aunty/grandad calling round for a piece of cake at teatime.

OP posts:
diddl · 17/12/2009 08:44

Well if it´s a party for adults, then imo the cake sounds as if it will "fit the bill" perfectly.

Enjoy!

BellasSparklyBaubles · 17/12/2009 08:51

Make sure you get lots of photos of the 1 yr old with a chocolate smeared all over their face

piscesmoon · 17/12/2009 08:53

I expect that the cake will taste much nicer! DS won't care-he will have lots of birthdays where he can admire the cake. I think you are just tired. Make a nice snowman cake, or similar for Christmas.

AvrilH · 17/12/2009 09:05

you sound as tired as I feel

You clearly deserve a large slice of cake

ruddynorah · 17/12/2009 09:14

he will love the cake. the guests will love the cake. no one likes it when a boring caterpillar cake is brought out.

mistletoeandjuan · 17/12/2009 10:09

If he's ok with that much chocolate then it'll be fine. You can always get some hundreds and thousands and smarties and write his name on the top.

It might even look homemade if you do that and then the photos will look even better

gatheringstones · 17/12/2009 10:25

i know how you feel but i've learned (the hard way) that if i want something done to my specifications (eg in date, kiddy cake) i have to do it myself. if i ask dh or whoever to do it, they'll bring their own priorities - and that's fine. you have to let it go. what's important is your dh's motivation - which was to help you out.

the cake really doesn't matter, as everyone says. it'll go down a treat!

have a lovely tea party!

gatheringstones · 17/12/2009 10:28

and congratulations - maybe it's just me but i was very pleased to get to the end of that first year of having two children!
i always think the mum&dad should get a real treat on that day too!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/12/2009 10:29

yabu

its a cake and a nice chocolate one from m&s sounds much nicer then the caterpilla ones

your 1yr wont care and adults will enjoy more

stick a 1 candle on it

MrsMattie · 17/12/2009 10:29

YABU. It's a cake. Your child is one.Just enjoy it!

clumsymum · 17/12/2009 10:34

The caterpiller type cakes are, IMO, utterly VILE. The coloured icing is over-sweet, often gone hard or gritty, and covering a very mediocre bit of pappy pale sponge.

I think you will be much better off with this yummy sounding chocolate cake. Don't worry about the use-by date being tomorrow either, keep it airtight in the fridge, and it'll be fine till the end of the week-end at least (tho' it wouldn't last that long here).

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/12/2009 10:36

It's a cake.
It's Chocolate.
I see no problem here.

Your DS is going to love regardless. Relax and have fun.

ChippingIn · 17/12/2009 10:41

LOL at your 'name'

YANBU in so much as you asked him for an in-date, childrens cake and you got a barely in-date adults cake.... I would have been disappointed too, however, as the others have said, the little one wont mind, the big one will soon get over it and the cake will be yummy!

I hope you have a lovely day

Clumsymum - you clearly haven't had an M&S Cateriller cake!! ... and entirely different species!!

BendyBob · 17/12/2009 10:43

You could jazz it up with some Smarties?

StayingSantasGirl · 17/12/2009 10:53

I can empathise with you, OP. It was my birthday on monday, and dh and ds3 went out to buy me a birthday cake in the afternoon (he'd forgotten up to that point). I murmured something about pink and pretty as they left - and I got a Top Gear Stig cake. I know they all taste much of a muchness, but one of the dses had already had the same cake for their birthday this year, and I wanted to be a bit feminine.

So come over here and we'll be unreasonable together!
