To think that HALIFAX are going to get allot of people in extra debt this christmas. Charging a £1 a day you are in your arranged overdraft!

Can't believe it!

so that's £30 a months if you are only even a couple of pounds into your arranged overdraft! Fantastic.

It's £2 a day if your overdraft is over £2.500.

£5 a day if you go into an unarranged overdraft.

I got a letter in the post yesterday.

Was so pissed off. I've had to stop buying presents now as it's not worth getting into that kind of debt.

YANBU and I think they are taking the p*ss.

I've been with the BoS for over 20 years and am raging about it. I'll be moving my account too.

SerenityNowAKABleh · 15/12/2009 10:22

Well, I have the current mystery of having a halifax account that is in credit, has been in credit for months, has money going in and out of it, and I'm being charged more interest than I receive. I've already closed down 2 HBOS accounts this month; I'm now thinking of closing more.

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 15/12/2009 10:25

thank god i read this thread, i accidently paid for some presents on my hbos account and was overdrawn. i will be trotting down to my local branch to close teh account later today.

thedollshouse · 15/12/2009 10:27

Natwest did something similar to me when I was on maternity leave, I had an agreed overdraft limit of £2k. When I went onto the unpaid maternity leave they wrote to me and said that they were not happy with the levels of funds going into my account and were cancelling my overdraft with immediate effect, I then started incurring unauthorised overdraft fees of £15 per day and they would not budge when I told them I could not afford the excessive fees. In the end I sold my car for £2k and Natwest agreed to waive the unauthorised overdraft fee which had by now amounted to nearly £500 if I closed my account with immediate effect.

MrsWillis · 15/12/2009 12:40

I have 3 accounts with Halifax, 2 of which have arranged overdrafts so I will be charged £60 a month. I have just been forced to give up my job and I have no way of repaying my overdrafts at the minute so I can't get away from them

I have switched, including our arranged overdraft - it was easy. My Halifax account was the household bills one so had about 40 direct debits and standing orders.

I went to Lloyds and they sorted it all out for me.

I hope all Hailfax customers who use their authorised overdrafts vote with their feet and close their accounts.

tiredfeet · 15/12/2009 12:49

thats ridiculous, poor you!

and thedollshouse I am so for you, that is dreadful behaviour by the bank, they should have given you time to get sorted, didn't even realise they could do that, its terrifying!

MrsWillis · 15/12/2009 13:01

Oh I didn't realise you could switch if you had an overdraft.

I think I might give Lloyds a ring and make an appointment to go in.

Thanks, you've cheered me up no end!

joanne34 · 15/12/2009 13:09

CUNTS !

They put people in debt, they expect you to pay for their fuck ups !!

I cant believe this shiting system !

I cant believe their allowed to get away with it !

wannaBe · 15/12/2009 13:16

Tbh it's likely that this is the way banking will go for everyone in the future.

Although the bank charges case went in favour of the banks, they are under huge pressure to revise their charges, and as a result they will make up the differences elsewhere.

We are actually extremely lucky in this country, as in most other countries you have to pay to do all your banking ie percentages to withdraw money/cash/deposit cheques/go overdrawn etc. It is IMO only a matter of time before banks here start to do the same.

doggiesayswoof · 15/12/2009 13:17

I've switched to First Direct and have a £500 overdraft facility so could have moved even if I was overdrawn.

I've been with Halifax for 12 years and DH has banked with BoS for EVER - like since he was 14 or something. Really fucking pissed off with them.

And another thing - you can request an overdraft online. I can get an overdraft of £6,000 at the click of a mouse without even phoning someone. DH, who is a SAHD and has hardly been in the black for over a year, has been offered a £1,750 overdraft. This happened just before they made the changes. So you get overdrawn by thousands and can't pay it off at all, even on the day you get paid. They get £1 a day FOR EVER.

CUUUUNTS

cordonbleugh · 15/12/2009 13:18

i hav a poor credit rating so no other banks will let me have a current account with them. To avoid being charged a pound a day for the overdraft i am never out of, i have to pay them £12.50 a month, upgrading to their ultimate reward account. I now hav travel insurance (cant afford a passport let alone a holiday), car insurance (never even had a driving lesson, let alone afford to buy and run a car) among other things. They are twunts!

doggiesayswoof · 15/12/2009 13:19

Yes wannaBe I think that's right, but the crucial thing imo is that it's not a percentage charge. It's a flat daily fee even if you are only overdrawn by 40p.

Most people will pay far more under this system I reckon.

serajen · 15/12/2009 13:29

Hate the Halifax, have a claim in with them for £1,700 in bank charges, now after the legal ruling it looks like nothing will be refunded, I hate the regime we have to live under in the country, wish we were all strong enough to protest because they're wiping the floor with us

giraffespullthesleigh · 15/12/2009 13:33

Bastards, I may move too - who shall I move to?

moondog · 15/12/2009 13:35

They actually have the nerve to crow about this (saw an ad in the paper yesterday) as if they are doing folk a favour.

I think a lot of people on the other thread said first direct were good.
I have stuck with HBOS as my fairly large overdraft means i am no worse off

However tis shite for those who had credit on their accounts who aren't getting anything

I asked the lady at the bank where is the incentive to stay in credit and she couldn't answer me!!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 15/12/2009 13:39

hate them too, we've moved to nationwide, they seem much better so far.
