And before you start on me I am guilty of this.

I always quite liked Cath Kidston stuff but as soon as I became a mum I saw it as a perfect excuse to go and buy one of her oil skin bags and some flowery mugs.

I think that when we become mums we struggle with our identity a bit and some labels define our new status.

I have sold my breast feeding tops and am starting to get back into my pre pregnancy style a bit more now but it's taken a year.

I'd never heard of all these people/ things until you lot started prattling about them on here. Sometimes it's a big culture-shock to realise they are just not on some people's radar.

It took me TEN YEARS to work out why girls and young women were walking around with bags saying "Jane Nor" on them.

Rollmops · 11/12/2009 22:09

Yickesss, wouldn't be caught dead wearing Boden. Cath Kidston is way too flowery for me. So, YABU.

Rollmops · 11/12/2009 22:14

Tis' the joke of the week, David Cameron being Boden 'class'.... Perhaps his staff is but I doubt very much, Mrs. C. has ever heard of the said MN institution. Come to think of it, neither had I... until I stumbled onto these revered pages.

thedollshouse · 11/12/2009 22:26

I had never heard of Boden until I used MN. I only like the childrens range so obviously I wouldn't have bought from Boden pre children.

scottishmummy · 11/12/2009 22:43

like mums who only get into prams after they have a baby?mn positively effervescent about boden the spiritual home for some

Monty100 · 11/12/2009 22:47

It was Laura Ashley in my day.

PincoPallino · 11/12/2009 22:52

LOL so so true. I have been wondering this myself...

ChatterClausIsComingToTown · 11/12/2009 23:01

The funny thing is, regardless of what I think about Boden,it seems that Boden loves me.

Whenever I where my Bodey B (as, ahem, I like to call it) stuff I always get told I look fab. A 25 yr old lad in a shop told me that my Heartwarming Henley junmper looked ace only this week. I'd just bought an item from the shop so don't think it was part of any hard sell technique! When I wear my 'birds' fun skirt, I get stopped by strangers who want to know where they can buy it. And I can order from my living room. Tis just too tempting to stop really.

ChatterClausIsComingToTown · 11/12/2009 23:03

ARRRRGHH - 'whenever I WEAR'. Apologies and call the grammar police please.

LaurieFairyonthetreeeatscake · 11/12/2009 23:04

Nope, my house was full of shabby shit chic before foster dd came to live.

in fact one of the first things she said when she came for tea was "ooh look, pretty fairycakes with glitter, can i live here?"

poshsinglemum · 11/12/2009 23:40

i just think that i was trying to conform to a stereotype that isnt me at all.

I think it's hard to know sometimes what is the real you that has changed since having dc and what is just you trying to "live up to" what you think a mum should be... Friends are good for reminding you of who you were before dc, over a few glasses of wine.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 12/12/2009 00:46

I blummin hate Boden. I ordered a dress - the most bizarre shaped thing I've ever tried on, I ordered a top - tight over the bust, baggy everywhere else (other shops manage to make tops to fit me, I am a very normal shape!!!) I ordered my son some trousers, he's 7 - I ordered age 8, they are too small.......

So Boden is not my yummy mummy uniform that's for sure

rowingboat · 12/12/2009 00:52

Cirrhosis same experience, didn't much like the look of the clothes on Boden anyway, but ordered trousers in a sale and they are very strangely shaped (or possibly my bum is).
Waist very big, hips very narrow.
Prefer getting a relative to babysit whilst I go and try things on (which I don't like much, but preferable to plodding to post office to return mail order clothing).
Not sure what Cath Kidston is, sounds a bit twee.

rowingboat · 12/12/2009 00:54

Laurie Fairy not real glitter on fairycakes! Or is it delicious. [not convinced face]

Purplebuns · 12/12/2009 00:58

I liked Boden, pre-baby and I am only 20 now! I hadn't been on mumsnet then either funnily enough.
However, I live in Devon, which is Bodenville and we have a shop that has a window full of Emma Bridgewater, so I guess I have been brainwashed raised to like that stuff?

Vallhala · 12/12/2009 01:15

I don't think either existed before I had my DC, but I was never into labels and preffered independent shops and more alternative styles. The Kings Road and Kensington Market were my second homes when I was much younger.

I don't like CK, too twee and contrived for my tastes, and am usually to be found in jeans these days unless I'm meeting people.

I do love my Boden boots though, they look and feel wonderful.

Vallhala · 12/12/2009 01:16

Preffered? I don't need Boden, I need Specsavers!

cheesefarmer · 12/12/2009 10:12

I'd never heard of boden til here and had a look.... It's expensive! I liked the kids stuff but I thought the womenswear was a bit, erm, frumpy.

I don't understand those of you saying you buy from there cos it's mail order, pretty much every shop has a website now where you can order online?

LaurieFairyonthetreeeatscake · 12/12/2009 10:20

rowingboat - you can buy edible glitter in all sorts of lovely colours

rowingboat · 12/12/2009 10:27

Puts on coat and drives fast towards nearest edible glitter shop.

Cheese that's a good point, you can buy most brands online now, is Boden kind of safe, like Next do you think? You just put it on and you aren't likely to offend anyone.
I like those Boden tartan trousers for boys, nice! They sell on Ebay for practically the same price as new.
Not very keen on the skate/surf board look, but I still get a say on my son's clothing, can imagine that won't last.

I've just been looking at Boden to refresh my memory - bit 'spenny isn't it! There is a stripy tank top for £40 for a tank top!
Think I'll stick to Gap and New Look!

LaSoiDisantDame · 12/12/2009 12:35

Agree with Cheesefarmer,

To me Boden is not 'yummy mummy' at all, more 'frumpy mummy'

I don't get the mentality of changing your style just because you are a mum either tbh,but then I had DD in my early twenties so wasn't about to start dressing like my mother

santaschristmascakeywakey · 12/12/2009 14:03

Rollmops, do you not remember the in-depth coverage of David Cameron's Boden swim shorts a few year's ago? It must have been a verrrry slow news week
