to be annoyed at DH spending so much money

We've recently moved into rented whilst we wait to find a house to buy. Only a few houses have come up in area but they tend to be £25-50k over our limit.

Our rented house is 1.2 miles from train station up/down a very steep hill. DH has talked about getting a car. In the meantime he has unilaterally hired a car at £20 per day to run himself the 1.2 miles to the station. He also pays £3 per day for parking. I suggested perhaps he get a taxi but he says this would be too unreliable.

I had started to think buying himself a little run about would be the cheaper option but tonight saw the details of the car he has in mind - an 09 5-door Fiesta priced £11k. I had expected him to be spending a third of that tops.

Given that we can't quite afford to buy the type of house we want am I being mean to think he doesn't need to spend £11k on a car plus £700+ parking p.a. plus insurance for a new car.

To put in context I drive a 05 Honda Jazz.

I'm a SAHM so he earns the money but I don't think that is wholly relevant and to be fair he has never raised that.

And BTW one thing that made a huge difference to our financial state was getting rid of DH's car. He needed it when he was self-employed. Now he uses a bike for work.

Just keeping a car roadworthy and taxed costs stupid money.

YANBU and he is a fecking nancy. I walk with my 3 children to school. It is over 2 miles away. My DC1 (7.10) and DC2 (4.3) walk and DC3 (2.5) goes in the pushchair on the way up. My DC3 walks home. We live at the top of a steep hill and the school is at the top of a steep hill, so we have to go up hill both ways. Then we do it again in the afternoon. So 2 of my children and I walk 8 miles a day and the youngest walks up to 4 miles. That is not including stops in the play park and doing a quick shop around Tesco.

Tell him to bloody walk and save the money for a bigger deposit for the house.

Is he a man or a mouse.

Oooh! he's got my dander up and he's not even my DH!

nannynobnobs · 11/12/2009 12:13

Our walk to school is around 2 miles gate to gate. The kids never say a word about it!
I am quite flabbergasted that your DH won't walk such a small distance!
If it's shitty weather a cab will be a few quid then no parking charges. He's throwing money down the drain IMO.

GhostofMintyCandyCane · 11/12/2009 12:22

Buy him an umbrella and tell him to walk

YANBU !

mumof2222222222222222boys · 11/12/2009 12:23

Sorry but I think your DH is pathetic.

I walk about a mile to the tube, and then a good half at the other end. Twice a day.

DH (when he is around - but that is another story) cycled 6.5 miles to work. and back. 5 x a week...and when he had to get DS1 from school once, he did it 4x in one day. Mad I know.

And our AP has the car...

OtterInaSkoda · 11/12/2009 13:57

He is being daft. He should walk to the station and then, if he really cannot walk home sometimes then get a cab or ask you to pick him up, which of course you'd haapily do.

birdofthenorth · 11/12/2009 14:17

YANBU. DH and I recently decided to become a one car household after years of each having our own, to save cash. It means both of us walking shot distances more often, including in the rain, uphill, and in my case, often in heels and carrying a laptop, overnight bag and reams of literature for work. Is it annoying? Yes. Is it necessary in order to save cash? Totally. Is it the end of the world to have to walk a mile and a half a few times a week? No!

I have always been in the cars-are-to-get-you-from-A-to-B camp, but I am now warming to spending more on a nice one in a fews years time, once we've saved for it. But your DH hasn't saved £11k specifically for this car, and therefore you don't have £11k to spend on a car!! I sympathise!

titchy · 11/12/2009 14:18

He's a lazy git! Both dh and myself walk that far to the station 4 days a week, through woodland, down and up a very steep hill, through mud, stumbling over tree roots, in the dark in winter, in the pissing rain often. We take walking boots and a torch and umbrella and just get on with it.

£11 grand on a car equals £33 grand less to buy a house with, assuming you're going for a mortgage multiple of three times salary.

Fibilou · 11/12/2009 15:20

He's being lazy ! I walk nearly a mile each way to work every day in the rain, wind etc - and I'm 8 months pregnant !

MrsJohnDeere · 11/12/2009 15:28

YANBU at all. I'm quite at your dh. 1.2 miles is nothing at all.

Ridiculous waste of money imo.

OrmIrian · 11/12/2009 16:00

DS#1 walks that far twice a day to school

badgermonkey · 11/12/2009 16:05

I did pretty much that exact journey, hills and all, to the station for over five years and it's very doable (and I bet he won't be in heels either!) DH gave me the very occasional lift on awful days but 99% of the time I walked it. With an iPod full of good music and podcasts it flies by!

Hando · 11/12/2009 16:08

Op YANBU in thinking that he should be discussing large purchases with you. You are married, your money is shared, so therefore it makes sense that you should discuss things like this.

I don't think I'd like to walk over a mile up a huge steep hill after work, but then I don't think I'd spend 11k.

Why don't you talk to him about it. Explain you feel a little annoyed as he didn't consult with you and the money could have gone towards the house you'd like.

Skihorse - Tell me you were joking? What do you mean she should contribute to the household income? Op is married with a 1 yr old and 3 yr old - have you seen how much full time childcare is for two under 5's? You need to be on a huge wage to actually have any money left over, often it's financially better for one parent to stay at home. Full time nursery here is about £900 a month, per child. Also - They are a family, therefore money is family money. He can only go to work to earn that money because op is a SAHM and look after THEIR 2 children so he is able to work.

Lancelottie · 11/12/2009 16:15

Actually, though, is there a footpath or pavement? It's under two miles to my son's school, but utterly unwalkable because you'd be walking in the verge of a frantic A-road -- which makes it a very different question.

alarkaspree · 11/12/2009 16:15

My 3 year old walks further than that in the mornings. Your dh is being ridiculous to hire a car for the journey.

jasmeeen · 11/12/2009 16:16

He is being very lazy. 1.2 miles and he can't walk?!? Our walk to school is just over a mile and my 6 yr old walks that with no problem. The 3 yr old makes a good attempt at it too (tho very slowly!).

If the weather is bad you can always give him a lift.

If he is really adamant that he can't walk then I suggest a bike.

To even consider running 2 cars is ridiculous.

poinsettydawg · 11/12/2009 16:24

why do you need a car, noonoo? Has someone sasked that already? Can't you do without?

diddl · 11/12/2009 17:04

But even if Ops husband takes the car, there is still the parking fee.

poinsettydawg · 11/12/2009 17:09

£3 a day parking fee isn't bad at all.

No it´s not poinsettydawg, but it´s still a waste of money when the station is so close!

GhoulsAreLoud · 11/12/2009 17:55

Are you at the top of the hill or the bottom? Why can't he walk down it and get a lift/taxi up it?

thisisyesterday · 11/12/2009 19:28

lol i hope noseynoonoo has shown her dh this!

olderandwider · 11/12/2009 20:04

Assuming your husband works for 46 weeks a year, he is spending £5,290 a year on the hire car and parking. That could be used as repayment on the extra mortage you require to afford the house you want (extra £50,00 @ 5% = £2,500.) You will be quids in, saving overall around £2,790. Also, no gym membership needed .

WingedVictory · 11/12/2009 23:52

Yow. That's not far atall; what is he talking_ about?!
