To ask DP to pronounce it properly when we go out?

GreatForest · 10/12/2009 13:31

DP always pronounces "Fajita" exactly how its spelt. I.E. faJita.

I have told him its pronounced "Fa he ta" but he says he's just "used" to saying it wrong now and continues to do so.

However, at weekend we are going to Chiquitos and he intends to order fajitas. I asked him to at least pronounce it properly in there because its embarrassing if he says it wrong in there. He says I'm being stuck up and he'll just say it how he normally does.

Am I being stuck up or would it embarrass you too?

They are called chicken Vag in this house.

Do you say Pie-aya instead of Paella?

I would let it go, it is no big thing to lose sleep over

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 14:27

Her DH speaks english - which is completely different from "the English way".

You can still pronounce fajita correctly without a Mexican accent, in the same way that spagetti doesn't have to be pronounced in an Italian accent.

AgentZigzagDoingAYuleLog · 10/12/2009 14:47

So anyone who doesn't pronounce it fahita should be prepared to be 'corrected' like a child? Are there a lot of words you'd like to correct other people on Paolo?

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 14:50

What ARE you talking about??!!!

diddl · 10/12/2009 14:50

Well if I was saying something incorrectly, I´d rather be told tbh.
Especially a word in such common usage tat saying it wrongly would make be look like a complete prat!

AgentZigzagDoingAYuleLog · 10/12/2009 14:56

I just wondered whether you told many people that they're saying words 'incorrectly'?

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 14:59

Err, nope

AgentZigzagDoingAYuleLog · 10/12/2009 15:02

Oh, OK, that's that sorted then

Did I get a bit uppity then? I apologise if I did, if there's a phobia against pedency then I've got it.

bandgeek · 10/12/2009 15:04

Not as bad as my DH, he once ordered a lemon MER-IN-GUE pie in a restaurant. Beats me how he had never heard the word meringue pronounced properly before!

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 15:05

LOL!

BTW - do you pronounce Majorca "Mallorca"?

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 15:08

That reminds me of the time MIL told the "is it a cake or a meringue" joke, only to confuse us all completely by saying "is it a cake or a gateaux"

TisTheSeasonToBeHully · 10/12/2009 15:08

Shoot him.

There are several towns and indeed countries we can't visit because dh can't pronounce them. Is most annoying.

OrmIrian · 10/12/2009 15:10

I think you are being a bit daft.

I don't suppose they will care what he calls it as long as he pays the bill.

AgentZigzagDoingAYuleLog · 10/12/2009 15:10

After saying all that, I actually pronounce it fahita lol

AgentZigzagDoingAYuleLog · 10/12/2009 15:12

(glad you found a Christmas name hully)

TisTheSeasonToBeHully · 10/12/2009 15:13

(Thank you, it is courtesy of Greensleeves)

Paolosgirl · 10/12/2009 15:14

OWWWWW...I'm TELLING on you

I knew you'd pronounce fajita correctly really

OrmIrian · 10/12/2009 15:15

I've always been a bit confused about foreign pronunciations TBH. We don't say Paree for example. We say Paris. Which words have to be pronounced 'properly' and which don't?

I don't tend to pronounce fajitas either way. I can't stand them.

Ivykaty44 · 10/12/2009 15:15

YABU - just rename him delboy

Acanthus · 10/12/2009 15:19

pedency?
do you mean pedantry??
snigger

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 10/12/2009 15:37

haha, my Dad insisted on saying MER-NI-GUE and Gattux. . in public.

SCargot · 10/12/2009 15:38

as long as he doesnt say VAgita

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 10/12/2009 15:39

oh, and bolleax (instead of bollocks)

again.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/12/2009 15:52

My dad is terrible for this. We have hyoomous, peter breads, nackoss (nachos), Jalapeenos, faJitas and kaybabs. It's laughable but yes, it is embarrassing when you are out in a restaurant, especially when he bloody well know how to pronounce them.

passionberry · 10/12/2009 16:06

YABU - surely no one in Chiquitos will notice or care.

Although I can pronounce Fajita, I have a real mental block for pronouncing foreign food stuffs - arrabiata pasta, chorizo, expresso are just some of the things I have struggled with over the years. I also get the Italian fizzy wine mixed up with the fancy ham!! (and can't remember either of them at the moment!!)
