It's not very nice, is it?

bibbitybobbityhat · 03/12/2009 22:47

Context?

I think it has its place sometimes ...

LauraIngallsWilder · 03/12/2009 22:48

I find it weird and vile

herjazz · 03/12/2009 22:48

I agree. Twas far more fitting said by my drill instructor in cricuit training

much prefer shit and get off the pan

TheCrackFox · 03/12/2009 23:03

It is vulgar. I prefer "tough titty".

scottishmummy · 03/12/2009 23:08

unclench will suffice.clear and self explanatory

retiredgoth2 · 03/12/2009 23:11

I have used this phrase twice today.

I like it.

...it gives the right mix of instruction and contempt.

Perhaps this simply represents my mood...

No I don't like it either. It sounds awful and like the person saying it couldn't care less about what was bothering you.

Miggsie · 04/12/2009 09:48

What?!

I am a person not a vacuum cleaner!

It sound like the equivalent of "Fuck off, nothing you say or feel matters, I'm the person who is right, get lost"

If my spouse said this to me I would go loopy.

AccioPinotGrigio · 04/12/2009 09:49

How strange. I had never heard this expression until last night when ds (aged 7) said it to himself. For the last few weeks he has been plagued by a fear of burglars coming in through the attic windows to "get us". We have had lots of nights spent discussing it and rationalising it, I wasn't sure where it would end until last night, he sat in bed and shouted:

Right that's it, I've just got to suck it up and get over this nonsense about burglars.

I thought it made sense actually.

SkipToMyLou · 04/12/2009 09:51

I much prefer Nut Up. More people should try it, it's not that I don't sympathise, it's just that I'm a fan of saying what needs to be said.

UnquietDad · 04/12/2009 09:58

How about "jog on"?

A Pricey Kate special, that one.

Callisto · 04/12/2009 10:27

Why do you think it's vulgar? I think it's quite bracing in a 'don't panic and carry on' kind of way.

It's an Americanism that has been around for a long time and the rough etymology is 'suck in your chest' ie take a deep breath, don't winge and get on with it. Not much vulgar about that is there?

skihorse · 04/12/2009 10:44

I like it, but then I'm a huge fan of "toughen the fuck up princess".

Too many people want to be wet-nursed.

WouldYouCouldYouWithAGoat · 04/12/2009 10:48

i don't like it. i also dislike lush and people saying 'i was sat (stood)' etc.

Ixia · 04/12/2009 10:48

Sil's ex boyfriend is a US Marine, it's a phrase he seemed to use a lot, think it's a military thing?

is he a sockzilla?

Morloth · 04/12/2009 11:00

hehe I use suck it up all the time. Says everything I want to in just three small words.

And yes it is used for whining not actual distress. It is what my trainer yells at me when I blubber about not being able to lift something a couple more times.

My favourite for DS which pisses him off is "Life is hard, wear a helmet".

I've heard it on Scrubs, and they're just showing series 8 on E4, so maybe that's why it's suddenly in vogue?

whifflegarden · 04/12/2009 11:18

Tis one of my favourite sayings, use it all the time on the whining brigade (DD).

Morloth, love "life is hard, wear a helmet"...will add to my repertoire.

LtEveDallas · 04/12/2009 11:19

I get told 'Man Up, Soldier' quite often - think I prefer suck it up...

CarmenSanDiego · 04/12/2009 11:21

I hate all of those 'suck it up', 'end of', 'get over yourself' comments. Do adults really talk to each other like that?
