i think it's great and have used it in a dr phil-ish caring way. LOVE man up, soldier.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 04/12/2009 11:22

only morons say end of ime.

PopsyWind · 04/12/2009 11:31

It doesn't bother me too much.

DH is always saying 'take your oil' which I think might be a northern ireland thing as he's from Derry.

It gets right on my nerves but suppose I'll just have to suck it up

CarmenSanDiego · 04/12/2009 11:32

Yeah, 'man up, soldier' is good though

Docbunches · 04/12/2009 11:37

I like it and use it a lot on MN, but to my DCs I would probably use an alternative such as "you'll just have to grin and bear it", which doesn't quite have the same impact.

glasjam · 04/12/2009 16:26

I've always had a suspicion that it derives from something sexual and so it's always made me wince slightly. Can someone confirm that this ISN'T the case and then I can stop wincing? Although having said that, my next thought would be that it involved sucking up something nasty like vomit.

Am I over-analyzing??

Jujubean77 · 04/12/2009 16:29

hate it -

i say deal with it

mrspnut · 04/12/2009 16:29

I often use "suck it up, buttercup" on DD1 who is a great whinger.

I like Man up, soldier too. I might start using that one.

EdgarAleNPie · 04/12/2009 16:30

i use 'man up' because it tickles to say it to my cutesy little girl when she falls over. thank you MN!

i think suck it up derives from taking a deep breath....often used on ANTM

kinnies · 04/12/2009 16:34

Oh just SUCK IT UP! MoonDog

I just told Ds(8) to 'toughen up princess' He just looked at me like and carried on moaning at me but it made me laugh!

EdgarAleNPie · 04/12/2009 18:23

@ thecrackfox 'tough titty' was an expression used by my dear old Dad in his speech at my wedding. apparently i used to run around yelling it as a toddler.

CheerfulYank · 04/12/2009 18:32

PMSL Edgar.

I've heard "suck it up" for years now, but, well, am American.

I have on very rare occasion told DH to "nut up or shut up." It is not reccomended.

MrsMattie · 04/12/2009 18:37

I quite like it. I'm not really into American phrases, but this one encapsulates a certain sentiment very well. It's shorthand for 'Stop being a big fucking baby and deal with it, you twat!'.

serinBrightside · 04/12/2009 20:59

I hve never heard it and agree with you Moondog, it's horrid.

WTF on the other hand is delightful

GhoulsAreLoud · 04/12/2009 21:02

I prefer 'man up'

Or, my personal favourite:

"tuck your skirt in"

ClaireDeLoon · 04/12/2009 21:03

Only ever seen it on MN. Most memorably when someone said people with fertility problems should just 'suck it up'. Funnily enough never liked it.

ClaireDeLoon · 04/12/2009 21:10

I do like 'life is hard, wear a helmet' though

CheerfulYank · 05/12/2009 01:26

I also like, "just put on your big girl panties and deal with it."

People don't say "cowboy up" over there, do they? That's obnoxious.
