To think changing a school pinafore everyday is excessive?

DD also has a clean set of uniform each day - 2 pinnies, 3 skirts, 9 polos (bought one pack too many, oops), 2 cardies and 3 jumpers. Only the polos need ironing and she doesn't get changed when she gets home from school as her jeans and tops etc do need ironing, I am a lazy wench who will keep ironing levels down at all costs. DD does get 2 days out of jumpers and cardies though. Her PE kit is also on its second term without a wash.

AnalysisParalysis · 03/12/2009 21:32

Is it a status thing?
I'm wondering, because the pinafores at my DC's school are £35 each... maybe she likes to let people know she can be profligate?

purpleduckUnderTheMistletoe · 03/12/2009 21:44

My dcs have loads of uniform. I grew up in Canada, where we didn't have uniform, and I have always thought it would be so so boring to have to wear uniform - and the SAME uniform all the time. So mine tend to have different kinds of skirts, trousers tops etc.

As for clean stuff everyday...YES!!!! Mine wear their uniform all day, and there's no way they would stay clean throughout school and into the evening. Changing into "after school clothes" would invariably create 2 sets of clothes a day.

Can't say I would ever be moved to boast about it though!

serinBrightside · 03/12/2009 21:44

I used to do this with DD (very PFB), however since DS's arrived on the scene and my return to work they now all wear their uniforms for several days/weeks/months,

Sometimes they even wear each others trousers, either at half mast or trailing along behind them. This is usually spotted at the school gates and they have swapped over in the loo.

VengefulKitty · 03/12/2009 21:48

Energy wasting to do that much washing if it is not needed!!!

DS has a clean polo shirt every day, but jumper and trousers go 2 days easily.

Wheelybug · 03/12/2009 21:58

dd has 2 pinafores, 1 skirt, 3 polos, 1 cardi and 1 sweatshirt (which she refuses to wear).

She takes her cardi off as soon as she gets to school so doesn't get dirty so that lasts all week.

Polo shirts I aim for a 2 days each (obv 1 only does 1 day) and she doesn't really like her skirt so we try and make 2 pinafores last the week but in reality she often wears her skirt at least one day... if not two.

But, I think she's quite messy.

Wheelybug · 03/12/2009 21:59

oh and our polo shirts are bright yellow so can't go in the wash with anything else (if in a dark wash they turn a bit grey) so I only wash once a week and then share with a friend so we take it in turns to wash shirts.

ravenAK · 03/12/2009 22:01

Yep, clean polo shirt daily, jumper & trews x2 for the week.

Although the polo shirts are always horrible tbh - ds gets them covered in felt pen & chuff knows what, it doesn't come out in the wash, & I put them back on him knowing that they're clean even if they're stained

I always vaguely assume it's all covered by his jumper, but presumably he must be taking it off in order to trash the shirts...

I must admit I don't lose much sleep over it - nothing wrong with primary children looking a bit grubby in IMO. Shows they're keeping busy!

CertainAge · 03/12/2009 22:13

My seven-year old only has one pinafore dress and it usually lasts the week, especially with a bit of judicious sponging. She wears an overall for anything messy at school,

She doesn't have a BO problem so I am not worried about smells from within.

madrose · 03/12/2009 22:27

My reception PFB started off with 3 pinafores and 3 cardis. Did all the spot cleaning etc. But found it was a nightmare to keep her clean - she's a child and is mucky (as it should be!), so I got two more pinafores (£3 - £6 each) and 2 more cardis.

Everything is washed and sorted out at the weekend. On 5 hangers, there will be a pinafore, polo and cardi.

At bedtime, a uniform will be brought out of the wardrode and hung on door - so DH can find it in the morning (I leave dead early and all sorted). If by some miracle her uniform is clean, I'll hang it up and reuse it another day.

I've found it easier that way, no panic washes and its all sorted. I'm hoping that the two new cardis are the next size up and see her through to yr 1.

You have to do what's easiest for you - mind you I wouldn't have brought 5 pinafores if they were £30+ each

mamamia74 · 03/12/2009 22:32

I have clean clothes everyday and wouldnt be happy with my children wearing the same clothes for days on end, especially not when they are crawling around on not so clean school floors. All depends on personal choice though.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 03/12/2009 22:35

y DD is in Year one and gets visible dirt/glue/paint/yoghurt on her clothes pretty much everyday.

My dd is in F2 and needs clean uniform every single day as she comes home covered in lunch, paint, mud, glue etc etc. She is always the cleanest going in and the messiest coming out!

katnkittens · 04/12/2009 00:04

My poor DD2 (DC3) has hand me down jumpers from my dd1 plus half of her friends (the Mums helpfully providing me with bags of uniform once their dds left said school) therefore allowing me to wash once a month or something equally slovenly....

That aside, she would wear a skirt/trousers for a couple of days probably unless they got dirty but most of our clothes live in the ironing pile and we generally play hunt the odd socks on a morning... we find it livens up the day.

My dd1 goes to an independent high school where uniform costs an absolute bomb and is therefore not allowed to dirty ANYTHING during the week and if she does it's a babywipe jobby.

My DS (13) is left to his own devices.... I wash what is in his basket but dread to ask how often he changes his clothes... he passes the sniff test and I spray deoderant at him in a morning so I guess he's ok.

pantomimecow · 04/12/2009 09:52

I am a bit that some people would put their DC in the same garment for 7 days in a row without washing.
Aren't you worry they smell and you have become accustomed to it ?

Ixia · 04/12/2009 11:40

DD has clean uniform everyday, it's timesaving. I do one uniform wash at weekend, I don't faff about sponging off marks or checking she's clean, it's just clothes on and out of the door. She does have a lot of uniform, but we aren't fortunately paying £35 for one item, a lot of her stuff is 2nd hand and will be donated back to the 2nd hand rail when she's finished with it.

There's no way her clothes would be fit for a 2nd day anyway and after 5 days she'd look like a mobile skip.

Wolliw · 04/12/2009 11:47

Save the planet. Don't change the pinafore until it looks dirty. Boasty super clean mum is burning all that electricity for nowt.

You could always lie and say you come in at lunchtime to change your daughter's clothes incase anyone has breathed near her.

heartofgold · 04/12/2009 11:49

we have 2, plus a skirt, which is 1 more than we need really [slattern]

WillowFae · 04/12/2009 11:52

DD starts uniform class in Jan. She will be in three days a week and I have just bought 2 pinafores, two blouses and one cardigan.

DS who is in year 1 has 3 pairs of shorts, 2 tops and 1 jumper. He NEVER spills on them and they have art aprons at school for messy stuff.

hatwoman · 04/12/2009 12:07

dds don't like pinafores anymore and wear skirts. they have 2 each but definitely have a favourite and a reserve. most weeks they wear it all week. small spillages get mopped off with a damp tea towel. it's quite a disgraceful waste of energy to wash clothes that aren't properly dirty - and I expect most aren;t after one days' wear. also pretty wasteful to buy 5 when 2 is enough. come over all green and superior if she starts "boasting" again.

MollieO · 04/12/2009 12:09

Ds gets clean uniform everyday. It wouldn't occur to me not to. He has 3 of everything so we do a wash on Tuesdays and weekends.

threeplusone · 04/12/2009 12:24

My school age children have clean uniform on everyday..(aged 13yrs adn 5 years) I wash the uniform every night even though I have spares in the cupboard. But i am a bit OCD on washing and I annoy myself with making more washing.. nothing is allowed to be double worn!! which drives DH mad, as the jamas go on after bath, straight to bed then they are generally off beofre breaky.. but I still put them straight into he wash..

loobylu3 · 04/12/2009 13:14

threeplusone- you must really enjoy doing the laundry!
