I have a DS and have plenty of uniform to avoid the HAVING to wash mid week but in practice he gets clean pants, vest, socks and polo shirt daily. Trousers every 2nd day if I can and jumper get washed on weekend. He wears it into school, takes if off when he gets there and it sits in his locker till hometime when he shoves it into his backpack. I shake it out, fold and and put it back on him next day!

I think 7 pinafores is crazy though. 5 would be plenty surely.

MayorNaze · 03/12/2009 11:07

oh god 7!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/12/2009 11:07

My dd changes her clothes every day the same as me and her dad. I can only wash once a week so it is a bit of a headache.

Arsed · 03/12/2009 11:11

You know, thinking about it, DD has got 2 trousers, 2 skirts and a pinafore so I am almost as bad.

I change the whole lot on a wednesday though unless she's grubby.

Most of it lives in the ironing pile anyway, it'd take an emergency to get me ironing..

Georgimama · 03/12/2009 11:11

I just think that many items of uniform is an unnecessary waste of the planet's resources. If everyone just cut down on stuff perhaps we wouldn't chuck so much stuff out.

sillyoldfatcatpuss · 03/12/2009 11:20

She's bonkers. Why give yourself all that work if they aren't even dirty. Wasteful wasteful wasteful

MillyMollyMoo · 03/12/2009 11:24

I used to do this when i had one child at school, now i have 3 and the pinnies are £30 each they have one set of uniform which gets washed on wednesday and friday night and nobody has died

Poledra · 03/12/2009 11:28

DD1 has 2 pinafores and a skirt, I change them when they are dirty or on Wednesday, depending on which comes first. Ditto cardigan. Polo shirts do 2 days unless dirty (though are changed more often in summer when she is a sweaty little mary). All clean undies every day.

But then, I do not change my clothes every day either, nor does DH. I think we can get a bit obsessed with having everything clean. If I've worn a top to work where I sit at a desk all day, managed not to spill anything on myself, managed to prevent the DDs spilling anything on me and it's not been a hot day, I do not see the need to wash the top. I'll air it and wear it for a second day before putting it in the wash.

GoddessRidingSantasSleigh · 03/12/2009 11:38

how do you all only wash on weekends? or maybe a midweek wash

i swear i wash clothes everyday! and there's only 3 of us in the house, i'm clearly doing something wrong

r.e uniform, my dd has 3 sets and i only change them when they get dirty as 4 yo don't smell do they

BendyBob · 03/12/2009 11:39

When dd1 (pfb) started school I was much more enthusiastic about all that sort of thing. (Maybe not to that degree though!) I also used to iron baby vests for goodness sake and dress her in white rofl!

Now 3 dc in total and a few more miles on the clock...well as long as pants and socks are clean and the rest is passable they get clean twice a week (or once)

BendyBob · 03/12/2009 11:43

Goddess - Ah well uniforms I might do twice a week.

The rest of the enternal washing is made up with towels, bedding, pj's, undies, teatowels, our clothes etc to the power of infinity.

God it's endless and I always seem to have to do some every day. Where it comes from is a mystery. I wonder sometimes if my neighbours sneak in and leave theirs to be done

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/12/2009 11:52

We live in a block of 14 flats and share two machines. One day a week I am up and down the stairs for about 7 hours. Each load takes an hour to wash, then we've got a wind machine that blows onto a zigzag line or a tumbler.

loobylu3 · 03/12/2009 11:53

YANBU. She is crazy unless her child is v accident prone and constantly falling in muddy puddles or something. Children don't sweat in the way that adults do and the pinafore isn't even touching her skin. I can't really understand why she thinks it is virtuous to change her child's uniform every day. Seems like a big waste of time!

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/12/2009 12:00

I think I was probably the same when dd was new to school and I was all excited about it (sad). Have always had enough kit for the week - say couple of dresses, one skirt and one pair of trousers. She did used to come home filhty sometimes and I wouldn't want her to wear dirty kit.

Can't imagine I would boast about it to another mother though. That really would be daft.

Still got about 8 shirts for dd (she is nearly 14) as for some reason she still comes home filthy, paint, mud or pen. Things haven't really changed from when she was 5 in that respect!

monkeyfeathers · 03/12/2009 12:05

Like hando's dd, my ds needs to change his uniform every day because it gets visibly dirty and I'm not willing to send him to school covered in yoghurt or whatever.

We have 6 pairs of trousers and 6 polo shirts (because they came in packs of 2) and 5 sweatshirts (which all need replaced now as his arms seem to have grown an inch since Friday). We used to only do the washing at the weekend but we seem to do it at least every second day since ds2 came along.

NickeeS · 03/12/2009 12:12

YANBU - She is sadand has too much time on her hands, and obviously not worried about the environment !

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2009 12:15

yanbu

all depends on the child

we have 5 t shirts - this gets chnaged daily - then 3 jumpers+skirts/trousers

normally get 2 days out of those, but have been known to have a clean one mon+tue and then i wash tue night and wear the 3rd one wednesday

PeachyDrapedInSparklyTinsel · 03/12/2009 12:15

I try to get 2 days out of the boys greys (trousers and jumpers) but change shirts daily.

Having 4 boys, could you imagine 7 X sets for all? 28 jumpers (never mind the £16 cost of each one..... i'd need a mortgage!)

But then us bigger famillieswash every day anyway

I dont think having 5 sets is odd, 7definitely is and boasting is just unpleasant

YANBU
I have enough washing with 3 DCs without changing school stuff everyday. They are kids - they're meant to get dirty. Umless there's a really big spill on the jumper they're wearing it. Also little kids don't smell that bad, do they? Hmm, maybe should give them the underarm sniff test this afternoon. If you never hear from me again then I'll probably be with the washing machine.

bellissima · 03/12/2009 14:04

YANBU.

I admit to the worst of the worst on here, spot cleaning, letting things go for days (not tights and underwear you understand but everything else). Was somewhat horrified yesterday though when took elder DD for tour of secondary school and noticed stain on her jumper when she took coat off - argh my come-uppance

BadPoet · 03/12/2009 14:10

Agree, depends on the child. My messy dd generally does have a clean one every day but I do inspect and spot clean if possible.

YANBU for finding the whole 'rejoicing' in telling you thing odd though. I can't imagine a situation in which I would announce that fact in the playground.

MillyR · 03/12/2009 14:10

I have 4 sets, and DD usually has a clean set everyday. She doesn't get changed after school and usually manages to come home dirty from play time or get muddy playing outside or covered in dog hair, food, or craft stuff inside.

We don't have a tumble dryer and I am not at home during the week to peg washing out and be here to check it doesn't rain. We live in a particularly rainy part of the country. I don't do that many dark washes a week so the skirts usually all have to go in together at a weekend.

Cardigans don't get changed every day because they come into less contact with the dirty ground.

I fail to see how these are matters for people to be judgemental over!

pigletmania · 03/12/2009 14:25

YANBU, unless it is obviously dirty or stained or smells bad, there is no need to change them everyday. I do this with my dd nursery polo shirts, she only wears them for 2.5 hours and a sweatshirt is on top of them, so when she gets back i whip it off for the next time shes at nursery.

pantomimecow · 03/12/2009 17:14

dd changes everyday.I think they sit on the floor a lot and always have that unmistakeable 'school' smell after having been worn for a day.
