to think that thread titles, AT LEAST, should be spelled correctly?

I mean, how urgent are most threads, really? Can't the thread titles be re-read at least once?

I'm not even bovvered when it's a commonly mis-spelled word, when someone doesn't realise they're making a mistake: 'loose' and 'lose', or something like that.

But when it's just clearly wrong ...

Tsk.

Peachy · 30/11/2009 11:36

See? errorg. Tsk, that was after triple reading as well- ah well. I suppose being 77 I get a bit of leeway now?

And what Rhubs said...... If I ignored a thread with a spelling title and found it was that way becuase the person was typing through tears for example (I've done it,loads of us have) then I would be a lesser person.

GibbonInARibbon · 30/11/2009 11:47

AIBU to think that some people are utter knob twats, who have so little a life, they feel the need to belittle others?

GibbonInARibbon · 30/11/2009 11:49

I feel the same as Rhubs and Peachy but am feeling sick and hormonal, so sadly, could not put it as eloquently.

ImSoNotTelling · 30/11/2009 11:56

What rhubard said.

cakeywakey · 30/11/2009 12:32

TrillianAstra - I dare you to do it!

It's a bit of an overblown phrase, I admit, but useful when people need to get over themselves. I use it on myself a lot

BelfastBloke · 30/11/2009 12:59

Who said anything about ignoring threads?

OP posts:
piratecat · 30/11/2009 13:01

pmsl @ spelled!!

pagwatch · 30/11/2009 13:01

My spelling is shit.
But I am lovely so people should excuse me.

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 30/11/2009 13:02

I think life works on two levels;

Of course Rhubarb and others are right, there are far more important things in life and on some threads, no, it is not of the slightest importance.

But I also think on another level, being the very best that we can be is not a bad thing to stive for. Do manners matter? Spelling? Speech? Minor anti social behaviour? How we eat? Dress?

I don't avoid threads because they are incorrectly spelt. or gramatically incorrect, and I very very rarely criticise others or THEIR choices, but overall, I do think that there is a lot to be said for making the effort.

BelfastBloke · 30/11/2009 13:04

Why, piratecat?

TheMitsubishiWarrioress · 30/11/2009 13:08

Actually Gibbon, I think your point was very eloquently put. Whatever ones opinion, belittling other people and making them feel small or inadequate is a dreadful trait.

madamearcati · 30/11/2009 13:24

Spelled or spelt equally permissable according to online dictionary I have just consulted.
I am interested in what people have to say and couldn't give a monkey's about spelling.
Very rude and says a lot about the person who belittles others by criticising their spelling.

Rhubarb · 30/11/2009 13:30

BelfastBloke - why the name change then?

Misspellings irritate me too, as do glaringly grammatical errors like 'you're' when it should be 'your'.

BUT, there is a time and a place for it. Some thread titles are obviously written in a hurry, others by people who can't spell but are in desperate need of help and advice. If you went onto those threads and said something about their spelling, you would be shot down and rightly so.

Also, how do you think dyslexics feel whenever they read a thread like this?

I'm glad you appreciate me, hope you can appreciate what I'm saying here too.

And trust me, it should be 'SPELT'.

BelfastBloke · 30/11/2009 13:40

I trust you in almost all things Rhubarb. However in the case of 'spelt' vs 'spelled' I also trust the OED.

cakeywakey · 30/11/2009 13:42

I vote for spelled as well. Still think you need to get over yourself though BB

Rhubarb · 30/11/2009 13:43

Your thread title is written in the present tense, yet the word 'spelled' is clearly in the past tense.

I suggest you revise your tenses my dear

VinegarTits · 30/11/2009 13:54

i agree it should be 'spelt'

and yes pagwatch should be excused for her niceness

madamearcati · 30/11/2009 13:57

It is the past participle methinks , which according to the OED is spelled or spelt

BitOfFun · 30/11/2009 13:58

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

pagwatch · 30/11/2009 13:58

I really did have a terrible education and i find threads like these quite difficult tbh.

I often feel surrounded by people who are brighter and better educated than I am, and threads like this just make me a little paranoid as if some collective MN sigh greets my illiterate musing.

It must make people less nice than me hesitate to post...

Rhubarb · 30/11/2009 14:04

paggy, sometimes I have shit spelling days but I don't give a toss. It's the content that counts.

For instance I just wrote 'Tony Slatterly' on another thread.

Which he is, but that's besides the point!

cakeywakey · 30/11/2009 14:04

BitofFun

VinegarTits · 30/11/2009 14:12

we are only human, we all make spelling mistakes from time to time

boolifooli · 30/11/2009 14:19

Why is it apparently okay to pick people up on their spellings on a web site but considered very rude to correct people's mis-pronounciations in RL unless you knew them very well. The internet is for everyone, no one should feel they can't join in just because their spelling isn't great. Human nature just loves to find ways to feel superior.
