to think that thread titles, AT LEAST, should be spelled correctly?

I mean, how urgent are most threads, really? Can't the thread titles be re-read at least once?

I'm not even bovvered when it's a commonly mis-spelled word, when someone doesn't realise they're making a mistake: 'loose' and 'lose', or something like that.

But when it's just clearly wrong ...

Tsk.

Firefox spell check add-on doesn't check the titles - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

My posts are (generally) spelling error free, although the grammar will be appalling, but thread titles - well that's just pot luck if I get them right or not

Bleatblurt · 29/11/2009 21:26

I think people who spell things incorrectly should be taken away and shot. Scum that they are.

No wait. I don't actually care. We ALL make typos.

BelfastBloke · 29/11/2009 21:28

Naturally BoF, that sounds like a reasonable compromise.

yabu i cant spell, so shoot me

MmeLindt · 29/11/2009 21:38

Have installed the spell check add on, thanks for that.

Now all my mistakes are my own (and because I can't be bothered going back to correct them)

abra1d · 29/11/2009 21:40

Oh, c'mon: 70% of Mumsnetters are GRADUATES. Our spelling is fantastic, obviously.

alwayslookingforanswers · 29/11/2009 21:43

MmeLindt - it won't help you get your thread titles right though so the OP will still be upset

scottishmummy · 29/11/2009 22:03

unclench.have read perfect syntax posts that are still pish

so a wee spelling mistake isnt a problem

particularly hate the slabbering pedants who turn up and correct posters on their spelling. that is picky and rude

it is an internet discussion.you dont need to Harvard reference or have perfect spelling.as long as the general jist is understood

but those long drones with no paragraphs, text speak, that go on and on are tiresome.such posts look so dull i dont bother

BelfastBloke · 29/11/2009 22:10

'Course most of you are pretending I am talking about spelling and posting in general, which I'm not, rather than thread titles in particular.

As Butterball says, we all make typos.

I'm not a spelling and grammar fascist. Just think thread titles deserve a bit more care.

OP posts:
alwayslookingforanswers · 29/11/2009 22:13

and you'll see that some of us have admitted to having atrocious spelling, only saved by an add-on spell checker.........which DOESN'T work in the thread title box.

VengefulKitty · 29/11/2009 22:36

Yes MmeLindt - I see you have already sorted it though

Shows how much notice I take of mine - I never even realised it doesn't check the titles!

SixtyFootDoll · 29/11/2009 22:39

I can spell i just can't type

TrillianAstra · 30/11/2009 10:05

You can nearly always tell the difference between a spelling mistake and a typo.

Titles, at the very least, should be spelled as correctly as you can. At least try. This means poor typing is not an excuse. I don't play around with preview or spellchecking, but I would re-read a thread title.

BelfastBloke · 30/11/2009 10:28

Trillian is wise and speaks sooth: "You can nearly always tell the difference between a spelling mistake and a typo."

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 30/11/2009 10:38

Sooth? Do I?

VinegarTits · 30/11/2009 10:58

I can type, i just can't spell, but i get by (very well in fact) so it doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things

I don't proof read thread titles, i can't be arsed, if i can manage to read it the rest of you can too

Rhubarb · 30/11/2009 11:01

So if someone came onto Mumsnet, desperately asking advice about depression in pregnancy, but she spelt the thread title wrong, you would just ignore it and not offer her advice?
Because of her spelling?

Rhubarb · 30/11/2009 11:02

Talking of spelling, shouldn't your thread title read 'SPELT' and not 'spelled'?

BelfastBloke · 30/11/2009 11:12

Nah, it should read 'spelled'.

Rhubarb you were really kind to me on MN months ago when I was posting under a different name. I appreciated it then and I appreciate you now.

OP posts:
cakeywakey · 30/11/2009 11:22

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? If Mumsnet was only open to people who spelled all of their titles and posts correctly, there'd be very few of us here

Rafi · 30/11/2009 11:23

Spell checkers can be worse than useless though... they give you a false sense of security but they don't pick up on there/their/they're or your/you're. Or lose/loose.

TrillianAstra · 30/11/2009 11:31

"In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?"

Hmm, fun game, let's go post that on every thread

Peachy · 30/11/2009 11:33

I can't use spellcheck on MN on my PC.

And today I apologised for a spelling errorg that I didn't even make, my eyes go double at times.

Maybe person has VI problems?

Or is battling a particularly enthusiastic toddler / trying to BF?

But whilst I judge away in terms of professional literature and actually feel nauseous at the sight of a cafe I known where they can't even spell omelette in the window, this is A) a personal forum, and B) somewhere where we should accept people for who they are, not their spelling.

As someone who has frequently been hauled over the coals for typing when actually I spell very well but am experiencing really bad eyesight issues, I've learned not t5o judge as long as the post is readable.

Textspeak annoys me because it is intentional crap, but genuine mistakes? Nah.
