£148 for a scarf

OP posts:
Ivykaty44 · 25/11/2009 20:26

I knew I was mistaken not knitting for a living.....

chegirl · 25/11/2009 20:34

She has been all over the news because she employs 'grannies' to do the knitting for her.

Oh how and her fellow 'designers' chuckle at the old folk 'bomarding their door' asking for piece work . (they do I saw them!)

I love to knit and its an expensive hobby if you want to use nice wool. A nice ball can cost anything from £5 and a lot are over £20.

A jumper can take 40 balls depending on the size and thats not counting the time spent knitting the bloody thing.

I am not sure how you can justify a garter knit scarf costing 150 quid though

chegirl · 25/11/2009 20:36

Just looked at the scarf. Ok its a bit more than garter stitch but still not worth all that money.

Unless its knitted with unicorn hair, hand woven by captive princesses living in a golden castle in the himylayas (or similar)

PerArduaAdNauseum · 25/11/2009 20:36

Or wrist cuffs for £30. Sweet Jesus Fuck

stainesmassif · 25/11/2009 20:39

but it is a diamond scarf. and therefore cheap at that price. have you seen the cost of diamond rings? very expensive

JokingAside · 25/11/2009 20:40

sorry, clearly had no idea how expensive knitting can be.

I'm hoping they're paying the 'grannies' a fair price. Maybe then I could see the company as a sort of charity. But with that expensive looking website I doubt it.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 25/11/2009 20:40

Can't believe it took 4 people to design a handful of hats and scarves in plain colours...

chegirl · 25/11/2009 20:45

I was wondering how much they paid those grannies (as they insisted on calling them). Bet its not a lot.

SixtyFootDoll · 25/11/2009 20:45

What a load of old tosh
Emperor'w new clothes anyone?

Botbot · 25/11/2009 20:47

I love the way when you 'click to zoom', you just get a fancy box with the scarf exactly the same size in it.

southeastastra · 25/11/2009 20:57

well i could definitely knit these and i'm a beginner

PerArduaAdNauseum · 25/11/2009 21:02

I could easily do this but I've had enough bobinogs to last me a lifetime

i don't begrudge paying a fair price for hand work. sadly the rest of the world does.

pigletmania · 25/11/2009 23:39

What a total rip off! £45 for a kids pom pom hat, and £48 for a kids wollen headband. I could ask my dds godmother to knit those for a fraction of the price or my elderly friends wife has an e bay shop where she knits lovely baby/kids and mums things for a fraction of the price.

pigletmania · 25/11/2009 23:42

That is not a a fair price heartofgold its extortion! How can you justify £45 for a kids hat! Or £30 for wrist cuffs

pigletmania · 25/11/2009 23:44

Or £68 for a adult bobble hat

pigletmania what's the shop's name?

pigletmania · 25/11/2009 23:55

i will have to find out from my friend, i could not remember it. will text him and let you know as i wanted to order some things from it after seeing that expensive site. Its very cheap and all hand knitted by his wife.

heartofgold · 25/11/2009 23:56

e.g. i made a fairisle hat for a friend's daughter. cost me prolly a couple of quid in materials (bfl wool, good stuff). took me a good hour or two to design a pattern, prolly 4 hours to knit, another hour finishing it. 7 hours at minimum wage = £40.60. plus materials.

heartofgold · 26/11/2009 00:00

the majority of women who still do hand work in this country do it for a pittance (or simply to cover their materials costs) and not a living wage.

pigletmania · 26/11/2009 00:05

heart how can you justify £68 for a bobble hat sorry i just dont buy it at all!JokingAside it will take a little while to find out what the shops name is (i cant remember) as i have lost his number and have to text another friend for it.

heartofgold · 26/11/2009 00:12

i've done as much justifying as i need to do piglet, since that isn't my site. as i said i value hand work because i understand what's involved, doesn't mean i have any expectations that other people will agree that these kind of skills deserve fair payment.
