He's just had twins, Brook and Drew. One was going to be a boy (apparently) and one a girl, but now I'm embarrassed because I can't tell from the names which is which.

Had decided Brook was the girl but then saw drew in pink....

One of my american friends called her B/G twins jackson and parker. I had the same problem. Apparently it's obvious that Parker is the girl.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2009 12:09

jackson is def a boys name, so guess that would make parker a girl - isnt there an actress called parker posy or something like that?

girlsyearapart · 22/11/2009 12:31

it all becomes clear ..

In desperate housewives isn't one of the scavo boys called Parker??

MissGreatBritain · 22/11/2009 12:33

PMSL at Firestarter and Asbo.

RustyBear · 22/11/2009 12:36

The only Parker I remember is Parker Abrams in Buffy - a boy.

If I came across the names Drew & Brook without knowing them , I'd assume they were both girls...

LynetteScavo · 22/11/2009 12:42

Parker is definately a boys name.

I would say Brooke with an e on the end is a girl, and Drew is a boy...but I do know a girl Drew, whos full name is Drusilla.

primarymum · 22/11/2009 12:47

The only Drew I know is a boy, short for Andrew, I thought if it was a girl it would have been Dru for Drusilla. Brook is a family name for BOYS! (well, in my family anyhow!)

pooexplosions · 22/11/2009 13:05

feeling your pain mrs croc! thats grim alright.....

MargaretLockwood · 22/11/2009 13:35

Hey Mrs. Croc - where do you teach? It's just that my son has a gender ambiguous name and if you're as snobby and judgmental about your newborn blood relations, I would hate to think what you're like with your pupils.

Have you never come across a female Chris or a male Lindsay? A female Alex and a male Stacey?

hanaboo · 22/11/2009 14:01

i don't think its BU to not know which is which, its a bit U to be taking the piss out of their names, i know a girl drew and she's lovely, i have NEVER heard of a boy call brook, but hey as long as its not short for brooklyn!

sockmonkey · 22/11/2009 14:18

There are 2 boys called Brook at DS2s nursery. Must be getting popular.

itchyandscratchy · 22/11/2009 14:20

you're being naive ML. Vast majority of teachers look at their classlists for the year and earmark which are going to be the PITAs. 9 times out of 10 they are right Let's hope your ds is the 1.

Plus I don't think MrsCroc was saying gender-ambiguous names are the problem; it's the names themselves.

clam · 22/11/2009 14:37

But if they're daft enough to name their children with androgenous names, they have to suck it up when people ask which is which.

harleyd · 22/11/2009 14:41

yea but theres no harm in asking which is which
its taking the piss thats the problem
i like the names, some people wont...but jesus laughing about your fucking niece and nephews names on a public forum...bitch, much?

FabHasHadHerSurprise · 22/11/2009 14:49

Why do you care?

You don't like your brother, you probably won't see the babies much and you don't like the names either.

And for whoever said they have a great auntie.

FabHasHadHerSurprise · 22/11/2009 14:51

Parker is a girls name too.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 22/11/2009 14:56

I love my nephew but the poor sod is lumbered with B.A.Boon. Oh how I giggle [shrug]

2rebecca · 22/11/2009 14:57

The 2 Brooks I know are female, as are the 2 Drews although 1 Drew's real name is Andrew.
I deliberately avoided unisex names/ hard to spell names/ most popular names so there will be 3 in their class, for my 2.

2rebecca · 22/11/2009 14:59

Sorry should have said the 2 Drews are boys.

MargaretLockwood · 22/11/2009 16:10

I'm not being naive ItchyandScratchy - it comes as no surprise to me that teachers make negative judgments and reinforce social stereotypes. Just give all the Isabellas and Olivers A grades and send Alisha and Callum to the Headmaster's office. Save the trouble of getting to know them or actually trying teach anything.

It says a lot about you that you don't even know my son's name and you still want to get in a dig. Thanks for your concern - he won't need it.

Also you might want to re-read the title of the OP if you don't think it's about gender?

JemL · 22/11/2009 16:19

itchyandscratchy "Vast majority of teachers look at their classlists for the year and earmark which are going to be the PITAs"

What a horrible and depressing piece of information that is.

JANEITEisntErudite · 22/11/2009 16:23

Well the Alisha I teach is one of the nicest and cleverest in the class!

Teachers don't all make judgements about names (well, except maybe children called Kane/Cain/Cane/Kain) and the op is being horrible imho.

QuintessentialShadows · 22/11/2009 16:24

People are going to think they are saying Brook Andrew and not Brook and Drew, and think they are gramatically challenged ....

MargaretLockwood · 22/11/2009 16:30

I agree with you JANEITE. It was just an example.

RustyBear · 22/11/2009 16:30

JemL - it's not a piece of information, it's an unwarranted speculation, probably based on a couple of jokey threads on the TLS forum - on a par with judging all mothers on the basis of the 'Mumsnet Shit tips of the day' thread.
