To feel like the most gormless mother ever -

...I have a 1 year old and only just discover that Pull-Ups tear off?

We've had to use them at night since he was about 4 months, as they're all that stopped leaks, and I took to keeping craft scissors around at night and when out and about, to cut them off. I even submitted that as a tip to the Towers. Then when gravely advising someone to do so on a thread, I was politely told they tore: I averred confidently that our brand didn't. Then tried it. And of course they do.

10 flipping months of either smearing poo all over the baby's legs/myself, or desperately trying not to cut him, as well as the nappy, and the feckers tear off! How could I not know that?

Has anyone else done something that stupid for that long? Please?

Im trying very hard to think of the something gormless that i have done to make you feel better, but i cant at the moment!

I did cough and squirt coffee out of my nose at a job interview once, if thats any help.

iwanttobepombear · 19/11/2009 00:53

my mum did that with nephews pull ups, inevitably getting poo all over everything. Was ranting to sis about how stupid these things were when sis pointed out that they rip. poor mum .
It's not obvious though is it?

perfectstorm · 19/11/2009 01:10

NO! Thank you! They should put it in big red letters on the front! I mean, what sort of person reads instructions on a product they will need to use for a good couple of years?

Snorting coffee out of your nose in a job interview did cheer me up, though. I actually would have snorted my own if I'd been drinking any.

Oh dear... apologies to my poor DDs, albeit many years too late. You're not alone PS (unless of course I can use the excuse that when my DDs were small pull-ups didn't tear off?).

I feel such a fool!

bellissima · 19/11/2009 09:44

When I stopped bfing DD2 I just got the old bottles and teats out of the cupboard (ahem sterilised them obviously) and proceeded to nearly choke/drown her in formula having completely forgotten the thing about different size teat holes...

And I was also the most incompetent mother at getting car seats strapped in/folding buggies - oh yeah and taking the lids off those non-spill (which always do) cups - impossible.

Sassybeast · 19/11/2009 09:58

I froze purees in ice cube trays for 4 months It didn't ever occur to me to freeze slighly larger portions, given that I was defrosting 24 cubes of food each time.

Chulita · 19/11/2009 10:00

I have nothing to add but I love the word gormless... My mum always accused me of 'staring gormlessly', hah!
Can you be 'gorm' then? or 'gormful'? ...

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2009 10:06

lol at poo down the legs and 24 cubes of food
i did do something like this the other day...still trying to remember.

At one point I was driving in an unfamiliar city with DH and we were lost. Ended up joining a roundabout to go right but realising we should have gone left so went all the way round and off at that "first" exit iyswim. Next time...lost again, came up to that roundabout. "I recognise this one" said DH. "You go all the way round and then that way". I nodded and got into the right hand lane to do just that. few seconds later "or you could just go left"

queenofthenewyear · 19/11/2009 10:10

Bless you - I was the same with swim nappies. Why, oh why, did NONE of the other mums ever tell me, as they watched me struggle to peel the wet nappy down wet legs week after week for nearly a year? They must have thought I was a right wally - and I was!

Casserole · 19/11/2009 10:10

If it helps you I didn't know they ripped off either - not using them yet but having been wondering for AGES how on earth it will work when I do - so I probably would have been you, given a bit more time!

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2009 10:11

i didnt know swim nappies ripped too - tbh I've never really struggled to pull them down really, and they're not full of poo.

Casserole · 19/11/2009 10:11

Swim nappies rip off too?!?!
My universe is tilting...

queenofthenewyear · 19/11/2009 10:16

Maybe I struggle cos DS's legs are too chubby - might try giving him 23 cubes instead of 24...
Stealth - if you've never had to deal with a soggy swim nappy full of poo (without realising they rip off) then you are indeed blessed...

Casserole · 19/11/2009 10:21

In fact this thread has made me realise that I don't even understand what pull ups are FOR!! DS is 19 months. Should I be using them??

I'm so confused.... there you go OP, I'm even worse off than you in the gormless stakes!!

ProfYaffle · 19/11/2009 10:21

You should go to Lidl, their pulls ups have a little picture on the outside of the pack showing them tearing off.

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2009 10:22

i've only tgaken him swimming 4 times
and each time i was relieved he went in the morning!
nice to know they do hold it in though - always assumed they would leak, urgh

queenofthenewyear · 19/11/2009 10:30

Stealth - they don't hold it in - most swimming pools insist on 2 swim nappies. One disposable one like Huggies, and one outer one with leg and waist cuffs, normally made of neoprene, e.g. Splashabout Happy Nappy. They really do hold everything in...

GoldenSnitch · 19/11/2009 10:37

Never mind ripping off! I was amazed when I discovered that Night Time pull ups re-stick!

I'd half ripped plenty of nappies trying to get them on a wriggling toddler who demanded they be put on while he stood up so it was a relief to know I could just re-stick them rather than binning them.

sweetkitty · 19/11/2009 10:43

Sorry but I am PMSL pull ups cost a fortune as well, which brand are you using?

I was using Pampers for ages with DD1 before I realised that Tesco's or Sainsburys are actually better and cost a lot less.

My proudest moment was long before DC, I joined two sets of Christmas tree lights together in my hands then asked my friend to turn them on at the plug so I could test they were working properly and proceeded to electrocute myself, does that make you feel better?

ginnny · 19/11/2009 10:50

Haha!! I remember pureeing food for ds1 and being oh so efficient batching up ice cubes and freezing them.
Forgot to label them though and defrosted what I thought was stewed apple. Mixed it with some custard for his pudding and it turned out to be courgette
Poor DS ate it all anyway!

StealthPolarBear · 19/11/2009 10:53

it took a long time for me to realise that when DD is old enough to eat I won't spend twice as long feeidng her and DS - I'll still only prepare one meal, and no matter how mucky it gets I only have to wipe the floor once

GoldenSnitch · 19/11/2009 10:53

Everything but Huggies leak in our house

ginnybag · 19/11/2009 12:58

Lol, saying nothing about my stupider moments...

But... 'gorm' is an anglo-saxon word meaning 'full of sense or common sense' (Don't ask me why I know random crap like this... one too many pub quizzes, I think!)

perfectstorm · 19/11/2009 13:01

Casserole, they just leaked less wee at night, I think maybe they're meant to be for potty training but don't really know?

Sweetkitty, I have to use Nature Baby. I know they aren't really that eco due to using that absorbent gel, but he comes up in awful nappy rash with anything else, even the Sainsbury's own label so-called green ones. They cost the same as Huggies/Pampers. We cut the cost by using tots bots in the day unless out and about.

I love you all, though. I feel less isolated and alone in my gormlessness now. Plus not about to make a tit of myself at Aquatots. On nappy grounds, anyway.

Stealthpolarbear - the dog is my kitchen hoover. Most effective, Which would make her a best buy.

GoldenSnitch · 19/11/2009 13:17

I think Pull Ups are made for potty training. They're elasticated so they pull up and down like pants allowing children to go to the loo - but they're also absorbent like nappies so it doesn't matter if they don't make it.
