to dress my baby son in a purple hoodie?

I bought a purple hoodie from the baby boy's section of vertbaudet in the sale for my 7 month old son.. Its aubergine colour not lilac, and very plain. Several mums at toddler group commented on it, one saying he looked very colourful, one asking if the top used to be his big sisters, and the other saying that he was in touch with his feminine side today. Am I being unreasonable to dress my son in purple? Should he be only be wearing sludge and nautical colours ?

YANBU. It sounds nice.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 17/11/2009 12:16

Of course YANBU. You should dress your son in whatever you like except maybe dresses

RockBird · 17/11/2009 12:17

Sounds lovely. Purple is a fab colour and no reason why boys should live in sludge and blue.

Tortington · 17/11/2009 12:18

it depends...is it more lilac?

there are male and female colours we all recognise it - however whether one chooses to accept it as a social convention is another matter

2shoes · 17/11/2009 12:18

yanbu
ds is 17 and like spurple

BonjourIvresse · 17/11/2009 12:21

Its definitely not lilac, its a very deep purple aubergine colour though my subversive side is tempted to make it lilac next time!

no, it needs to be blue, grey or brown. if it has skulls, pirates or some reference to your son being a monster, all the better

gemmummy · 17/11/2009 12:23

do you really care what they think?

nomoralfibre · 17/11/2009 12:23

A non-lilac purple can be very manly. I think it's fine to dress a 7 month old in anything you like really. He won't care.

BonjourIvresse · 17/11/2009 12:24

I don't care that much what they think, but to get three such reactions in one morning made me second guess myself a bit. I used to dress my daughter in navy, but that didn't get such extreme reactions.

boys seem to be much more limited in the colours they 'should' wear. Personally I think the purple hoodie sounds great. I am mum to 2 ds's and dress them in orange and yellow, red and if I find a nice one purple is a great colour too. I hate the idea of having to buy only blue, khaki and grey for my boys for the rest of their lives.
Dress you ds in what ecvery colour you like except maybe pink

CMOTdibbler · 17/11/2009 12:34

I dress my 3.5 yr old DS in leggings - don't know what they'd make of that !

I love purple on everyone - DH used to live in dark purple shirts

Firawla · 17/11/2009 12:36

yanbu it sounds okay to me, i would continue to let him wear it. u must like it urself or wouldnt have given it in the 1st place, if you dont let him wear it due to comments it would be a waste of the item you bought. they are just being silly
ive had some purple aubergine colour things for my DS too i see nothing wrong with it, its a unisex colour so depends on the design if its for a boy or girl. if it was a dress i can understand them saying girls
anyway some people mistook my ds for a girl when in very boyish clothes, due to he used to have longish hair and curly. i would just ignore

spiderlight · 17/11/2009 12:36

My 2.5yo son's got a purple top and several people have commented on what a nice and unusual colour it is. I've never had a single 'girly' comment about it. If you like it and it suits him, ignore them!

upahill · 17/11/2009 12:37

This sort of thing is excatly why I didn't go to mother and toddler groups/PTA's /stand in playgrounds or anywhere there was a group of mothers and/ or childminders who form a clique. There are a lot of people who can think they can smirk, poke fun, make comments etc without caring that they may cause upset or offence. As the old adgage goes 'if you can't say anything nice shut the fuck up!'

I know Bonjour... your not that bothered by the comments but all this 'getting in touch with his feminine side' is just shite.

pooexplosions · 17/11/2009 12:48

whats wrong with pink anyway?

My 2 yr old boy today is wearing silver tights adorned ith pink stars. He likes them, and its cold. Neither of us could care less what anyone else thinks....

mitfordsisters · 17/11/2009 12:52

YANBU, but it can confuse (dim) people. I always put ds in tights in cold weather, and sometimes things with floral motif, or a bit of pink. Lots of people assume hes a girl in those circumstances... Can be a bit difficult to distinguish gender with babies and so conventions dictates we all make it reaaaaaalllllly obvious.

carciofi · 17/11/2009 12:58

YANBU at all, ignore them. My dd often wears navy.

lowrib · 17/11/2009 13:00

God what a load of fucking sheep (the mums at toddler group I mean, not the mneeters!!) How ridiculous.

Your son will have imagination, be happy and confident in himself, have great dress sense but know that what matters is on the inside. Their children will be uptight, have strange neuroses and either be homophobic or live tragically unfulfilled lives in the closet

YANBU!!!!

leothelioness · 17/11/2009 13:00

pooexplosions, nothing wrong with pink at all its just that most people associate it with a girl. my ds is 5 and would get teased at school for wearing it so I would not put him in pink.

dawntigga · 17/11/2009 13:02

YANBU it's a colour not a bloody life style!

My 3 year old wears purple. He has a pink t-shirt too.

Poohbearsmom · 17/11/2009 13:05

You can dress your baby in any colour you like and they r jus fools to Make comments like he's n touch with his feminine side today!! Dont let them bother ya tho, my ds1 was always mistook for a girl, i had him dressed in brown combats and cream and brown top one day when a women in my dr. Waiting room told me 'your daughter is so cute'

annoyingdevil · 17/11/2009 13:07
