grumpypants · 14/11/2009 17:51

uh oh. Are not some of these parents currently on threads nearby?

BitOfFun · 14/11/2009 17:56

A bit daft, but twas ever thus.

JTGPsmummy · 14/11/2009 18:08

I entered my DS into a comp but I did it as the photo is done by a professional photographer and you can buy the photos at a fraction of the price than one of these studios. We bought the whole package and that is most of our xmas presents sorted as a result. It would be nice if he won but I know he won't as its all about who has the biggest family that vote for them.

well hmm sort of sums it up, don't understand why you would set your child up for a fall.

i entered my ds for the local baby contest am i a bit hmm? he didn't win though. it was a fix

LyraSilvertongue · 14/11/2009 18:14

DS1 entered one of these in the local newspaper. We did it mainly for the photographs for ourselves.
But he won (without family voting dozens of times each) because he is truly gawjus
He's very proud of the trophy he won.

Mutt I am not desperate and needy, and 2shoes my DS is too young to know. I know many mums who do it just for the picture.

SprocketAndTubbs · 14/11/2009 18:32

IME, A lot of these competitions aren't actually about looks - more of a popularity competition for the parents.

i.e. The child with the highest number of votes wins - so you could have a really beautiful child who has a small family and whose family has a small circle of friends, who therefore doesn't get many votes, compared to another child who reaps in the votes as they have a large family and the parents e-mail all their friends and work colleagues to ask them to get involved.

Having said that, my DS used to do a bit of modelling - A lot of my friends thought I was exploiting him, but we enjoyed going and the money he earned is waiting for him in an account should he need it. I would like to think that he was picked for his looks and not how many people we know.

I know that the public is also asked to vote on these things, but having lots of friends and relations helps IMHO.

TheFallenMadonna · 14/11/2009 18:37

It's weird to vote in a baby beauty competition for a baby you don't know. Why would you do that? Why would you look at a row of random baby pictures and actually go to the trouble of voting for the best-looking?

Ronaldinhio · 14/11/2009 18:38

i like the idea of showing things
dogs horses pigs children
it makes for a nice day out

do they do a guess the weight of the child at these events?
cake stall?

TheFallenMadonna · 14/11/2009 18:40

LOL at nice day out. It should be a category in the horticulture and produce show

2shoes · 14/11/2009 18:42

JTGPsmummy yours sounds different as it must be the photo that is being judged not the child

Riven, I continue to be gobsmacked (with admiration) by the way you cope with some of the absolute shit that life throws at you, when I've been lurking on threads you've posted on.

I just cannot believe that someone said that. The sad thing is, I know that you experience such pig-ignorance and insensitivity on a regular basis.

SolidGoldBangers · 14/11/2009 18:51

I don't much like it either, though I think when it's babies it's fairly harmless ie the babies have no idea whether they are being voted for or not.
But I am equally appalled at Riven's experience. If you want a couple of hundred quid as well as shaming the fuckers, Riven, you could contact Take A Break (the most campaigining of the proleporn mags), they might very well run a piece. (Much as I like to take the piss out of such mags, TAB is surprisingly politically engaged and has run quite a few stories on How Dare They discrimiate against people with SN.)

ArizonaBarker · 14/11/2009 18:51

Does the lady in question still have all her teeth, riven?
