Oh Riven, that is truly disgusting.

You are right about the beauty pageants.
They are truly well, mind boggling.

I have to admit to entering my DD for a 'Baby of the Year' comp in our local rag last year, but it was in a bid to win a free year's supply of nappies. It did not come to pass. I wouldn't do it again

diddl · 14/11/2009 19:08

Yes, I once entered mine.

I think all you won was the photo framed.

Well, didn´t win.

Guess I wasn´t popular enough

chickbean · 14/11/2009 19:08

I won the baby competition at our local village show - turned out that all the other children in the village had chicken pox - so not so much based on looks as ability to be resistant to illness

i entered dd3 into a baby contest.

she didnt win, but the deal on photo packs was good. i have the picture framed in my hallway.

AvadaKedavra · 14/11/2009 19:13

YABU.

I am more hmmmmm at ones that go by most votes leading to people who post saying please vote for my dc - it's an unfair advantage.

chickbean · 14/11/2009 20:42

Riven - moi????? I was a scientific genius aged 18 months - released the disfiguring virus a couple of weeks beforehand and retreated to my playpen.

Actually, my mum only broke the news about the chicken pox to me when I was in my twenties - up until then I'd thought "at least I was beautiful once"

Fruitbeard · 14/11/2009 22:47

My elder brother won a beautiful baby contest when he was little. He got a silver knife, fork & spoon set which my mum still has.

I have (briefly) posted a recent pic of him on my profile so you can see what a gorgeous sex god he matured into.

(this was 'Hat Day' at the Olympia beer festival in case you're wondering why the interesting headgear!)

LynetteScavo · 14/11/2009 22:58

@ what the evil cow said to Riven! That has actually made me feel sick.

Aren't most of theose looks competions jsut about selling more local newspapers, though?

I entered DS1 into a beautiful baby competion once...poeple dind't have to vote, it was decided by a panel of judeges (it was for charity you had to pay to enter your baby)Andyway the judeges were obviouly stupid, or I didn't donate enough cash, as he didn't win. Can you tell I'm still bitter 10 years later?

Riven

Anifrangapani · 15/11/2009 09:22

Riven that is awful.

As for the comps that have photo's at the end to buy - they are a marketing ploy. You can hire a photographer for a day rate of £450 and get as many photo's as you want. Team up with your friends and all chip in £100 and you will have a great day out and the photo's work out cheaper.

CheerfulYank · 15/11/2009 09:27

I hearby bestow the gorgeous award on Riven's DD! Look at those eyes for Heaven's sake. It's so odd b/c before even reading this thread I commented on how cute her kiddos were, so obviously that horrid lady had her head up her ass.

Yes, I agree that the toddler beauty pageants in my dear ol' USA are TERRIBLE. However I do know a mother whose infant daughter does a bit of modeling here and there (the mother is a model herself) and it's pretty harmless. They're certainly saving more money towards her college education than I've managed for DS!

bratnav · 15/11/2009 09:43

Riven

DH has been asked to part sponsor this years comp (any baby related business is called I guess). I will tell him to call them and say no and explain why. for you. Maybe a loss of advertising revenue rather than common decency will make them think more carefully about who they employ.

JTGPsmummy · 15/11/2009 09:59

2shoes, yes it is a picture that they take and put in the paper, people are then asked to vote. I thought thats what your post was about but now I think it may be actual contests? I wouldn't do that as that could be disheartening for the children involved. I know I have a beautiful child and he won't win (it is just a popularity contest after all).

And Anifrangapani, all the photos, keyrings and magnets I got cost way less than £100.

Re American beauty pageants!! They are awful things. Hate little girls in make up!!

Riven - you should have said "better than a face like yours" but like you I never think if a comeback until much later and probably wouldn't have the nerve to actually say anything.

Poohbearsmom · 15/11/2009 09:59

What that woman said to you Riven i too think judging babies & children on their look is major 'hmm', i can understand wanting some nice professional pics & not havin the spare cash for them so doin the comp for that but i think Anifran had a gr8 alternative i jus think its gearing kids up to value their looks for what they can get outa them & before im flamed i know most of you are talkin babies but will u tell them when they r older? I know it is only 'harmless fun' for most ppl but i would jus worry about what type of ppl can now look freely at pics of my dc's? There are so many awful ppl out there & the thought of any of them havin pics of my babies makes my skin crawl!!

ilovesprouts · 15/11/2009 11:06

riven your dcs are gawjuss xx

KnottyLocks · 15/11/2009 11:20

Can arrange for that woman to wear that camera, Riven.

All 'beauty' contests make me uncomfy. It's inside where true beauty lies.

(Suddenly a philosopher...where that come from)

youwontlast · 15/11/2009 12:15

Most of those ones run by photographers in the local papers are a way to make them a good bit of money. Usually the prize is something daft like 20% off in a childrens shop, or a box of nappies lol. My local paper have one running the now, i was considering using it to get some christmas photos.
Ds was in the Bonny Baby comp at a galaday, it was judged by a pannel of judges (not the public) and he won. He got a litle keepsake cup and sliver spoon. Was cute.

What does "a bit hmm" mean anyway lol?

maxybrown · 15/11/2009 12:34

Oh I hate it. Last time I took DS to get his pictue done, there was this couple behind me waiting and watching DS....they kept commenting on how gorgeous he was and that I would never have a duff photo of him etc etc yada yada yada. Well of course I think he is cute, but I felt so uncomfortable and embarrassed, like I was looking for it (not at all) and mostly I felt sorry for her DS's as if she was saying hers weren't good enough. Riven I just can't get over someone would say that, how hideous!! And then you didn't get a reply either, shocking
