to find Asda girls' clothes slutty?

Tried to get a sweet, not too expensive dress for dd so toss up between Asda and Matalan. At Asda, from birth to 5 lovely, suddenly my child has become some kind of mini Jordan from age 5 upwards. What's going on?

I have ds's but agree with you over the girls clothes. Have been trying to find 9yr old niece an outfit for xmas....

No exprerience of Asda, but I do find it sad that little girls are being sexualised so early. I really sruggled to find something non sequined for dd to wear for a party. Usually she wears trousers and t.shirts, she is the least feminine girl I know and had agreed to wear a dress or skirt for dh's do at his work. She went in a new pair of trolleys.

Theres usually one or two OK things in our ASDA but a lot of its not nice - either slutty or HSM or silly cartoon characters at the moment. DD wouldn't be seen dead in them!

They used to be good for plain basics but I can't even see those this year for older girls.

Sainsbury's is much better, if you've got one near enough.

I got some lovely dresses from Tesco for DD, also got some lovely little girlie dresses from Next. I cannot abide all these mini skirts/crop tops/tarty clothes for 5 year olds.....don't even get me started on the thongs in age 7 sizes

TSC See the above link to the Tesco ones, not got the velvet bodice but they're what I think of as 'proper' dresses

EyeballsintheSky · 12/11/2009 08:53

Definitely agree. DD is 22 months and she has some gorgeous things from Asda. Have noticed that everything for older children is tarty black and silver with HSM or Hannah Wotsit or next to no fabric. Awful awful stuff. Wanted to get some 'nice' HSM things for my 7yo niece and couldn't find anything.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 12/11/2009 09:00

ASDA had some nice dresses in the Autumn collection, sleeved ones that came to the knee and had a little belt with them. But the Christmas party stuff is awful.

I think there are some lovely things at Asda you do have to look harder sometimes though. There are lovely things pretty much everywhere if you are prepared to look.

teameric · 12/11/2009 09:07

agree too went in Asda yesterday as I usually get nice casual stuff for DD(3) in there.
I thought it was all very slutty looking for the older age range, and I couldn't find anything at all for DD without a cartoon character blazened all over it. Don't quite know whats happened, new designer maybe? I went to Matalan instead and got her a lovely coat, it was meant to be £16 but I got 20% off,

MrsMorgan · 12/11/2009 09:15

I went to asda yesterday and there was some lovely girls dresses that were not slutty.

I agree, my DD1 (who is almost 6) had a sudden growth spurt that took her out of the 18 months to 5 range and its been really difficult..

Most of these ranges are 5 - 12 but I think next covers an even bigger spectrum...

But no 5 year old should be wearing the same clothes as a teenager and no teenager wants to wear the same clothes as a 5 year old.

I've always found Vertbaudet good for the non slutty clothes but their sizing is TINY so always order at least 1 size up...

I also find Boden really good for non slutty clothes...

"Preparecd to look?? That's quite insulting"
Thats a bit OTT I meant on several occasions. If you can be bothered, otherwise just go to the Boden website.

"a bit of a slap in the mouth"

Oh do calm down I wasn't being rude and am sorry if you took it that way.

Ixia · 12/11/2009 10:09

My 4yr old now needs tops from the older section of Asda, we did find some nice cotton ribbed polonecks, but there was soo much awful tarty stuff

M&S seem to be going the same way, so much silver/black/sequins and bloody HSM. This year we've been buying a lot of 2nd hand Gap and Boden from Ebay and a bit of new Boden. Next stuff where we are is OK, but washes really badly.

WobblyWench · 12/11/2009 10:25

Tesco do have some lovely party outfits, not slutty, and are mix n match, nice that they don't do the cartoon characters either, thought it was just me who hated those!

PixiNanny · 12/11/2009 10:30

I never knew that about Next! I did notice that the Next in the last place I lived stocked completely different clothes to the ones near me now! I just thoguht that it was changing fashions but stocking to the locals makes so much sense to me now...

TigerFeet · 12/11/2009 10:31

similar to you lequeen

most local shops stock sequinned tat and HSM crap

very difficult to get anything i would consider suitable for 5yo dd, esp at the cheaper end of the market

even the baby clothes can be dodgy, all slogans and sportswear

i find ebay a godsend
